Learning outcomes
Knowledge

The student who successfully completes the course will be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of theoretical concepts and methods of the quantum theory of Condensed Matter Physics. He/she will also be aware of important recent research arguments.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability - to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology and - in advanced knowledge of theoretical concepts and methods of the quantum theory of Condensed Matter Physics.

Syllabus

The many-body problem of electrons and nuclei in interaction. The methods of Hartree and Hartree-Fock. Homogeneous electron gas in the Hartree-Fock approximation. One- and two- particle operators in the formalism of second quantization. The density functional theory. Electronic states in solids: methods for the calculation of the energy bands. The method of Tight-binding. The method of orthogonalized plane waves The method pseudopotential. The method of Green's function. The method of Recurrence. Excitons, plasmons and dielectric screening in crystals. Weakly and strongly bound excitons. Plasmonic excitations. Linear response and longitudinal dielectric function. Thomas Fermi and Lindhard models. Systems of electrons and nuclei in interaction. The Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Degenerate potential sheets and Jahn-Teller theorem. Hellmann-Feynman theorem and its application to the calculation of the forces on the nuclei. Berry phase. Superconductivity
