The learning outcomes of this course are listed below and both learning activities and examination are based on those.
After you have passed this course, you will have gained knowledge and understanding within the topic and you will be able to explain (interpret, understand, reflect and remember) the following:
Reading and understanding a scientific paper/article.
Basic tips and tricks about how to write a scientific paper.
Being able to have a conversation in English.

Gli studenti saranno in grado di avere una conversazione in inglese e acquisiranno una conoscenza di base della scrittura scientifica.
The students will be able to have a conversation in English and will gain a basic knowledge about scientific writing.

EMERGENZA COVID - nuove modalità di esame:
L'appello dell'esame di Inglese Scientifico di Giugno 2020 si svolgerà in modalità esclusivamente ORALE.
Gli studenti dovranno sostenere un colloquio di circa 20/30 minuti.
Una volta che le registrazioni saranno chiuse, agli studenti verrà inviata una email con il calendario (giorno e ora) dei suddetti colloqui.
In caso di concomitanza con altri esami, si chiede cortesemente di contattare la docente, Ms Meoni [meoni@dm.unipi.it] per fissare un altro appuntamento.
MODALITÀ di ESAME:
Tutte le domande verteranno sul programma e su ciò che gli studenti avrebbero comunque dovuto studiare per il test scritto e per l'orale.

L'esame orale è composto da 2 parti
PARTE 1 - Scrittura Scientifica
Da due a massimo 4 domande inerenti la Scrittura Scientifica, sia dal punto di vista teorico che pratico (esercizi inclusi).
PARTE 2 - Una presentazione scritta o orale composta da due sezioni: A e B
SEZIONE A - Devono essere inclusi i seguenti argomenti:
• Sostantivi countable e uncountable. Articoli: "the", "a", "an" e "zero article"
• Tempi inglesi: quando e come usarli, nel parlare quotidiano e quando si scrive un documento scientifico. [Present simple, past simple, simple future, present perfect, e la forma passiva. Esempi da un articolo/paper scientifico saranno i benvenuti. Vedi anche le dispense fornite durante le lezioni)
• I 4 tipi di condizionale: zero, primo, secondo e terzo. Come si forma e si usa: dare esempi.
• Comparativi e superlativi: dare esempi.
• Verbi modali: scrivi 3 frasi con 3 diversi verbi modali che spiegano il loro uso specifico.
SEZIONE B
Una presentazione della durata di non meno di 3 minuti e non più di 5 su un argomento di matematica.
Una presentazione della durata non inferiore a 3 minuti e non più di 5 sulla scrittura scientifica.
COVID-19 EMERGENCY - NEW EXAM ASSESSMENT METHODS

The June 2020 Scientific Writing exam will not have a written test part.
The exam in its entirety will consist of a 20/30-minute interview.
Once the registration time is over, all students will be notified via email a schedule with the day and time for their interview.
In case of other pending exams, students are kindly requested to write an email to Ms Meoni [meoni@dm.unipi.it] to fix another appointment.
EXAM ASSESSMENT:
All questions will focus on what students are supposed to know for the written test and the oral part of the exam
--> please check and read carefully Syllabus, Bibliography, and Exam Assessment Methods sections of this exam page.
The oral exam is made of 2 parts.
PART 1 – Scientific Writing
Two to four questions max about Scientific Writing, theory and practice (exercises incl)
PART 2 – A written or oral presentation made of two sections: A and B
SECTION A – The following topics have to be included:
- Countable and uncountable nouns. Articles: “the”, “a”, “an” and “zero article”
- English tenses: when and how to use them, in everyday speech AND when writing a scientific paper.[Present simple, past simple, simple future, present perfect, and the passive form. Examples from a scientific article/paper are welcome. See also handouts given during lectures)
- The 4 types of conditional: zero, first, second and third. How to form and use: give examples.
- Comparatives and superlatives: give examples.
- Modal verbs: write 3 sentences with 3 different modal verbs explaining their specific use.
SECTION B
A presentation lasting no less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 on a Math topic.
A presentation lasting no less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 on Scientific Writing.
