L'obiettivo del corso è duplice: da una parte quello di introdurre gli studenti alla Metodologia della ricerca sociale, dall'altra quello di introdurre all'analisi delle reti sociali come prospettiva sia teorica che metodologica per lo studio dei fenomeni sociali e di politica sociale. Il Corso verrà effettuato privilegiando la dimensione del "learning by doing". Il corso sarà infatti suddiviso in due parti: nella prima parte, si presenteranno gli elementi principali del processo di ricerca, soffermandosi in particolare sui metodi quantitativi. Nella seconda parte, si progetterà e si realizzerà una semplice indagine sul campo adottando la prospettiva della Social Network Analysis, nella quale gli studenti saranno chiamati - opportunamente seguiti dal docente - a collaborare per la creazione di un questionario che poi dovranno somministrare e analizzare.
Con l'obbiettivo di affinare le conoscenze sia rispetto alla progettazione e alla realizzazione di una ricerca sociale, sia rispetto alla adozione della Social Network Analysis in quegli stessi processi di ricerca, si consiglia vivamente di completare le conoscenze acquisite nel presente corso, con la frequenza ai due Laboratori di Analisi dei dati 1 e Analisi dei dati 2 (da 3 CFU ognuno) che saranno effettuati in contemporanea al Corso di Metodologia nel secondo semestre.
The aim of the course is twofold: on the one hand, to introduce students to the Methodology of social research, and on the other to introduce social network analysis as a theoretical and methodological perspective for the study of social and social policy phenomena . The course will be carried out privileging the dimension of "learning by doing". The course will be divided into two parts: in the first part, the main elements of the research process will be presented, focusing in particular on quantitative methods. In the second part, a simple field survey will be designed and carried out by adopting the perspective of the Social Network Analysis, in which the students will be called - appropriately followed by the teacher - to collaborate for the creation of a questionnaire which they will then have to administer and analyze.
With the aim of refining knowledge both with regard to the design and implementation of a social research, and with respect to the adoption of the Social Network Analysis in those same research processes, it is strongly recommended to complete the knowledge acquired in this course, with the frequency to Data Analysis Laboratories 1 and 2 (from 3 CFU) which will be carried out simultaneously with the Methodology Course in the second semester.
La verifica delle conoscenze verrà effettuata mediante una prova finale, ma anche attraverso la condivisione dei lavoro di gruppo per coloro che frequenteranno. Gli studenti frequentanti potranno preparare una relazione e una presentazione sulle attività pratiche che saranno condotte durante il Corso, anche se questo ovviamente non impedirà di doversi preparare sui testi indicati nel programma.
Per i non frequentanti sarà sufficiente affrontare la prova finale. La prova finale sarà orale.
Per i frequentanti, le attività di ricerca che verranno progettate nel presente Corso di Metodologia saranno coordinate con le attività pratiche che saranno realizzate nell'ambito dei due Laboratori da 3 CFU "Analisi dei dati 1" e "Analisi dei dati 2"
The verification of the knowledge will be carried out through a final test, but also through the sharing of group work for those who will attend. Attending students will be able to prepare a report and a presentation on the practical activities that will be conducted during the course, although this obviously will not prevent them from having to prepare themselves for the texts indicated in the program.
For non-attending students it will be sufficient to take the final exam. The final exam will be oral.

Al termine del corso lo studente avrà acquisito:
a) la capacità di sviluppare e realizzare un progetto di indagine basato sui metodi quantitativi e sulla Social Network Analysis. In particolare:
- Definire una o più domande di ricerca
- Costruire un coerente disegno di ricerca
- Costruire un questionario e saperlo somministrare
- Analisi monovariata e bivariata dei dati
b) la capacità di interpretare i dati raccolti e analizzati, e di costruire generalizzazioni teoriche sui fenomeni osservati
At the end of the course the student will have acquired:
a) the ability to develop and implement a survey project based on quantitative methods and on Social Network Analysis. In particular:
- Define one or more research questions
- Building a coherent research design
- Build a questionnaire and know how to administer it
- Monovariate and bivariate data analysis
b) the ability to interpret the data collected and analyzed, and to build theoretical generalizations on the observed phenomena

Durante il corso saranno effettuate delle simulazioni di indagine in cui gli studenti saranno coinvolti individualmente o in gruppo, i cui esiti saranno verificati con la prova finale che consisterà, per i frequentanti, nella presentazione e discussione delle simulazioni condotte.
Per i frequentanti, le attività di ricerca che verranno progettate nel presente Corso di Metodologia saranno coordinate con le attività pratiche che saranno realizzate nell'ambito dei due Laboratori da 3 CFU "Analisi dei dati 1" e "Analisi dei dati 2"
During the course, survey simulations will be carried out in which the students will be involved individually or in groups, the results of which will be verified with the final exam which will consist of the presentation and discussion of the conducted simulations for the attending students
Gli studenti sapranno progettare concretamente semplici linee di indagine che perseguano lo scopo di raccogliere e analizzare dati su ambiti e problematiche di loro specifico interesse, e saranno in grado di costruire autonomamente dei quadri teorici con cui interpretare e leggere i fenomeni osservati. Sarà privilegiata l'adozione degli strumenti teorici e metodologici della Social Network Analysis.
Students will be able to concretely design simple lines of inquiry that pursue the purpose of collecting and analyzing data on areas and problems of their specific interest, and will be able to autonomously construct theoretical frameworks with which to interpret and read the observed phenomena. The adoption of the theoretical and methodological tools of the Social Network Analysis will be privileged.

Through involvement in simulations and concrete and direct research experiences, students will be asked to give an account of what has been achieved and acquired during the lessons and the concrete experiences in which they will have been involved

Le lezioni saranno, nella parte del corso, di tipo frontale; nella seconda parte sarà privilegiata l'ottica del learning by doing, mediante il lavoro collaborativo in gruppi di lavoro. Attrraverso l'organizzazione in gruppi di lavoro, gli studenti sperimenteranno semplici processi di indagine, di cui impareranno a gestire la conduzione e realizzazione, dalla definizione delle domande di ricerca fino all'interpretazione dei dati raccolti e analizzati. In questa attività pratica, sarà privilegiata l'ottica della Social Network Analysis.

The lessons will be frontal in the first part of the course; in the second part the perspective of learning by doing will be privileged, through collaborative work in working groups. Through the organization in working groups, students will experiment with simple research processes, of which they will learn to manage the implementation, from the definition of research questions to the interpretation of the data collected and analyzed. In this practical activity, the perspective of Social Network Analysis will be privileged.

Durante il Corso saranno trattati i seguenti argomenti: I metodi di ricerca quantitativi. Il processo di ricerca e le sue fasi. La costruzione e la somministrazione di un questionario su uno specifico oggetto di indagine. Esperienze concrete di raccolta e analisi dei dati. La Social Network Analysis: concetti e metodi essenziali. La costruzione di una domanda di indagine che preveda l'assunzione della prospettiva relazionale e strutturale. Il name generator, il name interpreter. Whole Networks e Egonetworks. Analisi descrittiva dei dati relazionali.
During the course the following topics will be covered: Quantitative research methods. The research process and its phases. The construction and administration of a questionnaire on a specific object of investigation. Concrete experiences of data collection and analysis. Social Network Analysis: essential concepts and methods. The construction of a research question that includes the assumption of the relational and structural perspective. The name generator, the name interpreter. Whole Networks and Egonetworks. Descriptive analysis of relational data.

L'esame sarà diverso per frequentanti e non frequentanti.
Per coloro che avranno frequentato assiduamente, l'esame consisterà nella preparazione e presentazione di una relazione orale sull'esperienza di ricerca empirica condotta. Le modalità di effettuazione della relazione e della presentazione saranno concordate in aula. In particolare, sia la relazione che la presentazione dovranno attingere pienamente ai testi d'esame, e dovranno esibire riferimenti specifici che connettano l'esperienza pratica condotta con i contenuti dei testi. Quindi, ovviamente, i testi andranno conosciuti. A lezione sarà fornita una descrizione accurata dei contenuti del testo in inglese.
Per coloro che non avranno frequentato, l'esame consisterà in una prova orale basata sui testi sopra indicati.
For those who have attended regularly, the exam will consist in the preparation and presentation of an oral report on the empirical research experience conducted. The methods of carrying out the report and the presentation will be agreed in the classroom. In particular, both the report and the presentation must draw fully on the exam texts, and must show specific references that connect the practical experience conducted with the contents of the texts. So obviously the texts will have to be known. An accurate description of the contents of the text in English will be given in class.
