This course will present a survey of films, directors, film styles and narrative forms in Italy from the 1940s to the present (with an introduction to the birth of cinema and the silent era). It is designed as an introduction to the history, the art and the industry of Italian cinema through its aesthetics and its relation to the wider social and cultural environment of Italy.
Academic progress will be verified at the end of the course through a written paper.
At the end of the course students will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the history of Italian cinema and they will develop an ability to discuss and analyse cinema as an artistic, industrial, and socio-cultural phenomenon. They will acquire a critical capacity to recognize historical periods, authors, forms and styles, and will be able to appreciate the richness of the film language and particularly the main features that made Italian cinema great to the world and a source of inspiration for many contemporary foreign authors.
Students will have to write a brief academic paper based on one or two films of their choice.
With the help of some bibliographical sources, students will have to write an analysis of one or two film, to provide its sociohistorical and cultural context, to put it inside the history of Italian film industry (author, genre, period). They also have to motivate their choice and to develop a personal reflection through a comparison with the culture and cinematography of their country of origin.
Students will acquire and develop an awareness of Italian cinematographic issues and their return on society.

- Each lesson will be divided in two parts. After an introductory lecture (historical and theoretical), a specific film will be viewed, analysed and commented (with audiovisual aids such as powerpoint)
- All the films of the course will be available at the audiovisual lab for watching (no download is permitted) and some are online
- At the end of the course the teacher will put on the e-learning platform some downloading teaching materials (papers, slides, volumes)

The course will introduce to Italian cinema, both in a historical and formal perspective. It will approach the relationship between Italian history and Italian film forms with special attention to neorealism, documentary, commedia all’italiana, new Italian cinema of the 60s and 70s and contemporary Italian cinema.
The course will provide an overview of the Italian social, economical and historical context parallel to its cinematographic development (both as an industry and as an art form) within the 40s and 50s, the 60s and 70s, the 80s, 90s and 2000s.
During the course we will see and discuss films by key Italian directors of the different periods, we will establish comparisons between classic, modern and contemporary Italian cinema.
The main reference textbook for this course is:
Carlo Celli and Marga Cottino-Jones, A New Guide to Italian Cinema, New York-Basingstoke: Palgrave (2007).
A selected bibliography on specific topics will be provided during the lectures.

- The exam is made up of a written paper (deadline 1th February 2020 - discussion of the paper 14th February at 10 am in sala riunioni Polo Guidotti - first floor)
- The academic paper lenght should be minimum 2000 words and students will have to consider a list of films that will be given during the course
- To do the exam it is necessary to follow 20% of the lessons (only one absence is permitted or else students should arrange with the teacher)
