Il corso di Arte medievale intende introdurre gli studenti ai concetti basilari della Storia dell'arte come disciplina scientifica, alla sua metodologia e terminologia e alla familiarizzazione con gli aspetti fenomenologici e stilistici della produzione artistica italiana nel millennio medievale.
Il corso si struttura in lezioni frontali e visite, che permetteranno di verificare direttamente ed applicare i concetti teorici appresi in una lettura e discussione dei monumenti dal vivo.
The course intends to introduce students to the basic concepts of History of Art as a scientific discipline, to its methodology and terminology, and to the familiarization with the phenomenological and stylistic aspects of Italian artistic production in the medieval millennium.
The course is structured in lectures and visits, which will allow students to directly check and apply the theoretical concepts learned in a live description and discussion of monuments.
Esame finale orale e scritto, con presentzione di una tesina su un monumento concordato con il docente.
Oral and written final exam, with presentation of a dissertation on a monument agreed with the teacher.
L'insegnamento mira a fornire agli studenti le competenze per riconoscere, analizzare e contestualizzare opere d'arte di età medievale realizzate nei campi dell'architettura, della scultura e della pittura.
The student who successfully completes the course will acquire the ability to detect, describe, analyze and catalogue European Mediaeval Art architectural monuments and sculpted or painted art works.
Durante l'esame, la prima domanda avrà carattere orientativo e costituirà una prova di lettura dell'immagine di un'opera, che lo studente dovrà mostrare di saper descrivere con parole proprie e con la corretta terminologia, individuandone le principali caratteristiche nel quadro della cultura artistica che l'ha generata. Le altre domande verteranno sui testi in programma e sul monumento prescelto.
During the examination, the first question will be orientative and will constitute a test of describing the image of an art work, which the student will have to show to be able to explain in his own words and with the correct terminology, identifying its main characteristics, in the framework of the culture who created it. The other questions will focus on the listed texts in program and on the student's dissertation.
Il corso è costituito da lezioni frontali condotte con l'ausilio della proiezione di immagini delle opere d'arte medievali e in visite a monumento medievali di Pisa e della Toscana.
Gli studenti sono invitati a partecipare con notazioni e domande all'analisi del docente.
Un argomento di particolare interesse per lo studente costituirà, in accordo con il docente, l'oggetto di un approfondimento personale di studio.
The course consists of lectures conducted with the aid of the projection of images of medieval works of art, and visits to outstanding medieval monuments in Pisa and in the rest of Tuscany.
Students are invited to take part in the lecturer's analysis with notations and questions.
A single topic of particular interest to the student will constitute, subject to agreement with the teacher, the subject of a personal study.

For attending students, the contribution to the discussion and deepening of the course topics will be positively evaluated.
Si consiglia di affrontare il corso con conoscenze basilari di Storia dell'arte e di Stora medievale.
Tutta la terminologia della materia, in inglese, italiano, nelle lingue classiche o in lingua straniera, sarà comunque introdotta e spiegata durante le lezioni.
E' richiesta, peraltro, una pronuncia corretta dei toponimi, antroponimi e termini tecnici stranieri.
It is advisable to take the course with a basic knowledge of Medieval art history and Medieval History. All the terminology of the subject, in English, or Italian, classical languages or in other languages, will be introduced and explained during the lessons.
A correct pronunciation of toponyms, anthroponyms and foreign technical terms is also required.
Una conoscenza approfondita dell'inglese è necessaria per seguire il corso, che verrà impartito in inglese.
Una conoscenza di massima dell'italiano è utile per comprendere la terminologia specifica e per rendere possibile la lettura delle fonti.
An advanced knowledge of English language is required in order to be albe to understand lectures and texts. The course will be given in English.
A basic knowledge of Italian is useful for understanding the specific terminology and for making possible the reading of the sources.
Il corso costituisce una buona base per affrontare gli studi successivi nel settore.
The course is a good basis for dealing with subsequent studies in the field.
Il corso prevede l'analisi delle opere d'arte, inquadrate con metodologia storico-critica comparatistica, attraverso l'esame strutturale e semantico delle opere stesse, con particolare riguardo al rapporto tra forma e funzione e tra aspetto e contenuto, alla luce delle conoscenze culturali, antropologiche e tecniche della società medievale.

Il corso individuerà esponenti significativi delle diverse tipologie di manufatti, che verranno presi in esame con costante riferimento alla coeva situazione politico-culturale e socio-economica per individuare il loro significato e la loro funzione nella società che li ha prodotti, nonché il ruolo di committenti, artisti e pubblico nella loro genesi.
The course involves the analysis of a choice of Tuscan medieval monuments, framed with comparative historical-critical methodology, through the structural and semantic examination of the art works, in the light of cultural, anthropological and technical aspects of medieval society.
During the lectures and visits, significant exponents of the different types of artefacts will be examined, with constant reference to the Medieval political-cultural and socio-economic background, to identify their meaning and function in the society that produced them, as well as the role of patrons, artists and the public in their genesis.

L'esame consiste in un test di orientamento, sulla base della lettura dell'immagine di un monumento o opera d'arte discussa nel corso delle lezioni e una domanda una domanda sui testi in programma e una di approfondimento su un soggetto prescelto su cui lo studente avrà condotto una specifica ricerca scritta.
Final oral exam. The first question will be an orientation test, based on the description of the image of a monument or work of art discussed during the lessons. Further questions will be on the books listed in the exam Bibliography, and a final one will involve the personal dissertation subject on which students will have conducted a specific written research.
