Il corso offre l'occasione per una verifica diretta, nell'ambito del tema prescelto, della vitalità permanente della cultura classica. Accanto alle costanti e alle inevitabili trasformazioni imposte da una diversa mentalità, lo studente avrà modo di misurare come la lettura di alcuni testi, da parte di autori contemporanei, alteri radicalmente il senso originario del modello classico, pur intrecciando con esso un interessante dialogo.
Lo studente che completa il corso con successo sarà in grado di dimostrare una solida conoscenza dei testi antichi e moderni analizzati a lezione, i cui temi sono così ampi e trasversali da consentire un fecondo paragone tra i diversi aspetti dell'antica società greca e romana e quelli della società occidentale moderna. Inoltre lo studente dimostrerà la sua capacità di trattare un determinato tema di storia culturale e di presentarne i risultati in modo articolato. Il corso vuole fornire allo studente gli strumenti critici e metodologici basilari per leggere e intendere diversi tipi di testi: usandoli in modo autonomo, lo studente sarà in grado di fare confronti tra culture distanti, sia dal punto di vista cronologico che spaziale.
The course offers the opportunity for a direct verification, within the chosen theme, of the permanent vitality of classical culture. Alongside the constants and the inevitable transformations imposed by a different mentality, the student will be able to understand how the reading of some texts by contemporary authors radically alters the original meaning of the classical model but, at the same time, establishes with it an interesting dialogue.
The student who successfully completes the course will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of both the ancient and modern texts presented in the lectures, which focus on topics broad and transversal enough to allow a fruitful comparison between the different aspects of Greek and Roman society and those of modern Western society. Moreover the student will demonstrate the ability to deal with a definite theme of cultural history and present the results in a structured way. The course aims at providing the student with the basic critical and methodological tools necessary for reading and understanding the different types of texts: the student who will use them autonomously, will be able to make comparisons between cultures far apart in time and space.
La verifica delle conoscenze sarà possibile già a partire dalla discussione al termine delle lezioni frontali. La valutazione individuale si baserà sull'esame orale conclusivo.
The verification of knowledge will be possible starting from the discussion at the end of the lectures. Individual assessment will be based on the final oral exam.

Capacità di confrontare i modelli e le relative riscritture, e inoltre di interpretare l'adeguamento degli schemi mentali del mondo antico alla cultura moderna e contemporanea. Lo studente sarà in grado di argomentare in modo articolato le tematiche affrontate dal corso.
Good reading practice of classical texts. Ability to compare models and their rewritings, and also to interpret the adaptation of the mental schemes of the ancient world to modern and contemporary culture. The student will be able to articulate the topics covered by the course in a structured way.
Discussioni al termine delle lezioni frontali ed esame orale conclusivo. Non sono previste verifiche in itinere, ma la valutazione finale terrà debito conto del grado di partecipazione degli studenti.
Discussion at the end of the lectures and final oral exam. Tests are not planned during the course, but the final grading will duly take into account the level of participation of the students.
Apertura e disponibilità a un dialogo informato con l'eredità del mondo classico. Sensibilità agli aspetti più costruttivi del confronto con il mondo antico. Consapevolezza della rilevanza culturale ed etica dei temi affrontati. Accuratezza nell'approfondire l'analisi dei testi anche se in traduzione, tenendo conto, per quanto è possibile, di alcune peculiarità espressive della lingua originale indicate dalla docente.
Openness to an up-to-date dialogue with the legacy of the classical world. Awareness both of the more constructive aspects of comparison between ancient and modern world, and of the cultural and ethical relevance of the issues addressed during the course. Accuracy in deepening the analysis of texts even in translation, by taking into account, as far as possible, some expressive features of the original language indicated by the Professor.

Per seguire il corso in modo proficuo non sono richieste conoscenze preliminari, se non una buona preparazione di base acquisita nelle scuole secondarie superiori. Può essere utile una conoscenza generale della mitologia greco-romana.
Preliminary knowledge is not required in order to attend the course. What is required is a good basic preparation acquired in secondary schools. A general knowledge of Greek-Roman mythology may be helpful.
Le lezioni saranno frontali, e la maggior parte dei testi sarà resa disponibile in una dispensa. Sarà possibile scaricare alcuni saggi critici dal sito di elearning del corso, che si dovrà consultare anche per le comunicazioni della docente. L'interazione con gli studenti si potrà avvalere anche degli incontri durante il ricevimento e della posta elettronica.
The lessons will be conventional, and most of the texts will be made available in a booklet/dispensa. It will be possible to download some critical essays from the elearning platform of the course, which should also be consulted for the Professor’s updates about the course. Interaction with students can also take place via meetings during receiving time and e-mail.
‘Aiutare gli amici, danneggiare i nemici’. Ricezione e cambiamenti di un imperativo etico della cultura greca arcaica.
Il corso si propone di illustrare come la scelta morale tradizionale, secondo cui i comportamenti verso il prossimo seguono un elementare principio retributivo, affiori ancora oggi in forme meno dirette ma comunque riconoscibili. Attraverso la lettura di testi del mondo classico e della letteratura europea moderna sarà focalizzata la regola basilare della società arcaica, l'ostilità verso gli avversari e la solidarietà verso le persone amiche, per seguirne gli esiti più recenti o le mistificazioni ideologiche. Quando le tracce di questo codice etico popolare emergono in testi moderni, vengono immancabilmente in primo piano i problemi connessi con la difficoltà di distinguere nettamente amici e nemici se, nel tempo, i ruoli vengono disattesi o mutano i sentimenti ad essi connessi. L'aspetto più fragile dell'antitesi, la reciprocità universale come fondamento della giustizia, costituisce il fuoco dell'attuale riflessione, ma era già un nucleo problematico nella letteratura tragica greca.
'Helping friends, harming enemies'. Reception and changes of an ethical imperative of archaic Greek culture.
The course aims at illustrating how the traditional moral choice, according to which behavior towards others follows an elementary remuneration principle, still surfaces today in less direct but still recognizable forms. Through the reading of texts from the classical world and modern European literature, the basic rule of archaic society, that is hostility towards opponents and solidarity towards friends, will be focused in order to follow the most recent results or ideological mystifications. In modern texts the traces of this popular code of ethics are connected with the difficulty of clearly distinguishing friends and enemies if the roles are disregarded or the feelings related to them happen to change. The most exposed aspect of the antithesis, universal reciprocity as the foundation of justice, constitutes the focus of modern reflection, but it was already a problematic topic in Greek tragic literature.

Gli studenti che non possono frequentare il corso dovranno contattare la docente. Si ricorda che soltanto se avranno concordato personalmente le letture integrative da aggiungere ai testi del programma potranno sostenere l'esame.
Students who cannot attend the course must contact the teacher. Please note that only if Professors agree with the integrative readings they will be able to take the exam.
Esame orale. La prova consiste in un colloquio tra il candidato e la docente; la durata media del colloquio è di venti/trenta minuti. Durante la verifica lo studente dovrà mostrare di conoscere i temi e i testi oggetto del corso e di aver compreso il filo conduttore tra i vari testi selezionati dalla docente; dovrà inoltre essere in grado di esporre gli argomenti con proprietà di linguaggio. La prova orale non è superata se il candidato non risponde correttamente a domande relative ai concetti basilari del corso, o se mostra di non essere in grado di esprimersi in modo chiaro e di non saper usare una terminologia pertinente.
Oral examination. The test consists of an exam between the candidate and the teacher; the average duration of the exam is twenty / thirty minutes. The student will have to demonstrate that he / she knows the topics and texts covered by the course and that he / she understands the common thread between the various texts selected by the Professor; he/she must also be able to expose topics with propriety of expression. The oral exam is not passed if the candidate does not correctly answer questions related to the basic concepts of the course, if he/she is not able to express himself/herself in a clear way and does not know how to use relevant terminology.
Le lezioni si svolgeranno nel secondo semestre, e si terranno a distanza (sulla piattaforma Microsoft Teams), a partire dal 17 febbraio, il mercoledì e il giovedì dalle 16:00 alle 17:30.
