L’obiettivo principale del corso consiste nel fornire agli/lle studenti/esse gli strumenti per interpretare e comprendere l’evoluzione del sistema internazionale durante il XX secolo.
Students who complete this course successfully will develop a solid knowledge of the main political processes and events in the modern international history (20th Century) and will be aware of the historical background that is necessary to understand present developments in the international relations. More specifically, they will be able to understand the international system in the interwar years and the origins, the development and the end of the Cold War.
Le conoscenze maturate dagli/lle studenti/esse verranno verificate durante il corso, commentando insieme alcune letture assegnate (caricate sulla piattaforma online dell'università entro la prima metà di settebre) e attraverso due verifiche scritte comunicate agli studenti agli inizi del corso.
Students who attend course's classes must demonstrate the ability to thoroughly deal with a specific topic and to critically address the identified research question. During the final written exam, students must be able to demonstrate their knowledge of the book/readings and be able to discuss their/its contents thoughtfully and with propriety of expression.
Alla fine del corso, gli/le studenti/esse avranno maturato la capacità di analizzare criticamente le principali tendenze politiche, sociali, culturali ed economiche avvenute nel sistea internazionale durante il XX secolo.
By the end of the course, students will have acquired the ability to critically analyze the main political, social, cultural and economic trends that occurred in the international system during the twentieth century.
Le capacità maturate dagli/lle studenti/esse durante il corso verranno verificate ogni lezione, in occasione della discussione sulle letture assegnate e di un breve riepilogo su quanto affrontato la lezione precedente.
Skills acquired by the students during the course will be checked every class, during the discussion on the assigned readings and a brief summary of what was addressed during the previous class.

In order to follow the course in a more profitable way, students should have knowledge related to the European history of the twentieth century.

Il corso, di 36 ore divise in 18 lezioni, dura nove settimane.
Le lezioni sono frontali, ma è richiesta agli/lle studenti/esse una partecipazione attiva alla discussione su una serie di letture caricate sulla piattaforma moodle e già distribuite tra le varie lezioni, come scritto sul syllabus (anch'esso caricato online).
The 36-hour course, divided into 18 lessons, lasts nine weeks. Students are required to actively participate in the discussion on a series of readings uploaded on the Pisa university web platform and already distributed among the various classes, as written on the syllabus (uploaded online).

- Dalla morte di Stalin alla "coesistenza competitiva"
- Il sistema internazionale durante gli anni ‘60
- Dal colonialismo alla decolonizzazione
- La decolonizzazione nelle relazioni internazionali
- La Détente e le relazioni internazionali negli anni ‘70
- I diritti umani e i rapporti Ovest-Est e Nord-Sud
- I primi anni '80: Reagan e "l'Impero del male"
- Il 1989 e la fine della Guerra fredda
This course provides students with a historical, political, economic, social overview of the international system in the 20th century. More specifically, this course covers the chronological events of the century, from the Firts World War, to the interwar decades, to the Second World War up to the Cold War. Classes focus on the main "actors" of the international system, rangin from States (European powers; USA and USSR, post-colonual states), to international organisations (Society and Nations and UN), to trans-national organizations and groups.
Oltre alle letture caricate sulla piattaforma moodle, il testo adottato è: Antonio Varsori, Storia Internazionale. Dal 1919 a oggi, Bologna, il Mulino, 2020 (o edizioni precedenti).
Students who attend course's classes will have to:
- Study a book on the history of the 20th century. In Italian, the book is Antonio Varsori, Storia Internazionale. Dal 1919 a oggi, Bologna, il Mulino, 2020.
Erasmus and/or visiting students who do not know Italian might study another book on the 19th Century International History either in English, or French, or Spanish. These students should contact prof. Marzano at this email address (arturo.marzano@unipi.it) by the end of September. Those who won't do that, will not be allowed to take the exam.
- Read the readings (the vast majority of which are in English) that are included in the syllabus uploaded online on the Pisa university web platform.
Per gli/le studenti/esse non frequentanti, l'esame consisterà in una prova orale sugli argomenti trattati dai seguenti due volumi:
1) Antonio Varsori, Storia Internazionale. Dal 1919 a oggi, Bologna, il Mulino, 2020 (o edizioni precedenti).
2) Un volume a scelta tra quelli elencati. Fermo restando che ciascuno/a studente/essa potrà liberamente scegliere il testo che maggiormente preferisce, ho diviso i volumi sulla base del curriculum di afferenza:
a) Curriculum di storia antica o medievale

Per gli/le studenti/esse frequentanti, il voto finale sarà determinato sulla base di:
1) La frequenza attiva alle lezioni, che conterà per il 20% del voto.
2) Una prova scritta intermedia, che varrà per il 30% del voto.
3) Una prova scritta finale, che verterà su tutti gli argomenti trattati a lezione e varrà per il 50% del voto.
The final mark will be based on:
1) Class attendance. Students have to attend at least 85% of classes. They are required to actively contribute to the discussion; 20% of the final grade will be based on that.
2)A mid-term written exam; 30% of the final grade will be based on that
3) A final written exam, based on the assigned readings and on what has been discussed in classes during the course. The exam will represent 50% of the final grade.

Il corso inizierà mercoledì 30 settembre e terminerà venerdì 27 novembre.

Le lezioni avverranno sulla piattaforma Microsoft Teams.
