Lo studente potrà acquisire conoscenze riguardanti un testo classico del pensiero filosofico antico, comprendendone il lessico, le tesi e le strategie argomentative, e inquadrandolo nel suo contesto storico-filosofico.
Students will become familiar with an ancient philosophical text, by understanding its terminology, doctrines and argumentative strategies, and framing it within its historical-philosophical context.
La verifica finale avrà luogo mediante un esame orale alla fine del corso.
The evaluation will take place through an oral exam at the end of the course.
Lo studente dovrà acquisire la capacità di esaminare con intelligenza critica il testo e i temi trattati nel corso, inquadrandoli correttamente nel loro contesto storico-filosofico.
Students are expected to acquire the skill to critically examine the texts and topics explored during the course, and correctly frame them within their historical-philosophical context.
La verifica delle capacità avrà luogo mediante le modalità impiegate per accertare l’acquisizione delle conoscenze.
The evaluation of skills will be based on the same method used to assess learning.
Lo studente potrà acquisire e sviluppare non solo accuratezza e precisione nella lettura e valutazione delle posizioni sostenute nel testo che verrà letto e commentato in classe, ma anche attitudine all’uso critico di un testo classico nel dibattito su problematiche contemporanee.
Students will be able to acquire and develop not just accuracy in the interpretation and assessment of the views presented in the text read and discussed in class, but also a critical approach to the use of Classical texts in the debate on contemporary issues.

Non è richiesta la conoscenza del greco antico. È presupposta una conoscenza generale della filosofia antica.
Knowledge of ancient Greek is not required. General knowledge of ancient philosophy is expected.
Il corso è basato su lezioni frontali del docente, durante le quali sarà letto e commentato il testo di Aristotele in programma. Riferimenti al testo originale saranno resi comprensibili anche a chi non abbia conoscenza del greco antico. Ulteriore materiale didattico potrà essere fornito durante le lezioni.
The course is based on taught lectures, devoted to reading and discussing Aristotle’s text. References to the original text will be made understandable even to students who do not know ancient Greek. Further teaching material may be provided during the lectures.
L’ottavo libro della Politica di Aristotele
Il corso consisterà nella lettura e nell’analisi dell’ottavo libro della Politica di Aristotele, un testo dedicato all’educazione, all’interno della riflessione sulla migliore forma di governo che occupa i libri 7 e 8 dell’opera. Ad una prima parte introduttiva, dedicata a illustrare la struttura della Politica nel suo complesso e i principali temi del pensiero politico aristotelico, seguiranno le lezioni basate sulla lettura integrale di Politica 8 e l’analisi dettagliata di alcuni aspetti centrali, come la necessità di un programma di educazione pubblica e il corretto uso di due discipline fondamentali: musica e ginnastica. Ampio spazio sarà dato alla riflessione aristotelica sulla musica (capp. 5-7), con particolare attenzione all’analisi delle proprietà rappresentative e delle finalità di quest’arte (educazione, divertimento, catarsi...). Saranno introdotti, nel corso della lettura e dell’analisi, numerosi confronti con altre opere di Aristotele, in particolare con l’Etica Nicomachea, e con un’altra celebre riflessione sull’impatto etico e politico dell’educazione: la riflessione che Platone sviluppa nella Repubblica e nelle Leggi.
The eighth book of Aristotle’s Politics
The course is devoted to the reading and analysis of Politics 8, where Aristotle explores the topic of education, within the account of the best constitution that occupies books 7 and 8 of this work. After an introduction illustrating the structure of the Politics as a whole and the main topics of Aristotle’s political thought, the course will focus on a reading of Politics 8 and a thorough analysis of some key aspects, such as the need for public education and the best use of two fundamental disciplines: music and gymnastics. We will deal extensively with Aristotle’s ideas about music (chs. 5-7), with particular attention to the representational qualities and purposes of this art (education, amusement, leisure, catharsis). Relevant comparisons will be drawn with other works of Aristotle (particularly the Nicomachean Ethics) and with another renowned view of the ethical and political impact of education (Plato’s view in the Republic and the Laws).

Data la natura del corso, la frequenza è fortemente consigliata. Chi non potesse frequentare è tenuto a prendere contatto con il docente almeno due mesi prima dell’esame orale.
Given the features of the course, attendance is highly recommended. Students who are not able to attend are required to get in touch with the lecturer at least two months before the oral exam.
Esame orale, durante il quale lo studente dovrà leggere e commentare parti del testo aristotelico e rispondere ad alcune domande sugli studi in programma.
Oral exam: students must read and discuss parts of Aristotle’s text, and answer some questions on the essays included in the bibliography.
