Il corso si propone di approfondire criticamente elementi delle culture letterarie germaniche, sia nel contesto della loro produzione e trasmissione coeva, sia nell’ambito del recupero rinascimentale e delle successive riscritture, sia infine del relativo sfruttamento ideologico, dalla Riforma protestante a oggi.
The course aims at a critical investigation of Germanic literatures, both in the context of their original production and transmission, as well as in the context of the Renaissance revival and subsequent rewriting, and, finally, exploring its ideological exploitation from the Reformation to the present day.

The seminar character of the course requires the active participation of students at different levels, whose contribution will highlight problems and advances in their preparation.
Al termine del corso studentesse e studenti saranno in grado di:
– individuare criticamente i processi di interazione alla base di testi letterari di singole tradizioni germaniche e di collocarle nei contesti culturali di origine;
– individuare le caratteristiche linguistiche, stilistiche e ideologiche di tali testi;
– individuare e discutere i problemi interpretativi posti da tali testi nella loro successiva ricezione.
At the end of the course students will be able to:
- critically identify the interaction underlying literary texts from individual Germanic traditions and place them in the relevant contexts of origin;
- identify the linguistic, stylistic and ideological characteristics of such texts;
- identify and discuss the interpretative problems posed by such texts in their subsequent reception.

A first level exam in Germanic Philology
Accanto a lezioni frontali di raccordo, il corso prevede lezioni seminariali e la discussione collettiva, con il coinvolgimento costante di studentesse/studenti, che sono tenuti a presentare in classe alla fine del corso una relazione precedentemente concordata col docente. La relazione rappresenta un requisito fondamentale per sostenere l’esame. Dopo una introduzione generale su aspetti culturali e linguistici della singola tradizione specifica oggetto del corso, le lezioni si concentreranno su un’approfondita analisi linguistico-filologica dei testi, seguita da osservazioni critiche.
In addition to face-to-face lectures, the course includes seminar lessons and collective discussion, with the constant involvement of students, who are required to present a report to the class at the end of the course that has been previously agreed upon with the lecturer. The report is a prerequisite for taking the exam. After a general introduction on cultural and linguistic aspects of the specific tradition covered by the course, the lessons will focus on an in-depth linguistic-philological analysis of the texts, followed by critical remarks.
Ars poetica e pensiero grammaticale nel Medioevo scandinavo. L'«Edda» di Snorri Sturluson
Dopo un ciclo di lezioni sulle tradizioni linguistiche, manoscritte e letterarie islandesi antiche, il corso si incentrerà sull'Edda di Snorri. Questo capolavoro letterario, politico, retorico-grammaticale e mitografico inaugurò nella Scandinavia del sec. XIII la tendenza al recupero ideologico della letteratura antica e dei suoi miti e creò le premesse per un ininterrotto processo di ricezione dall’epoca barocca a oggi.
Poetics and grammatical thought in Medieval Scandinavia. Snorri Sturluson's «Edda»
The course will start with a general introduction devoted to Germanic linguistics, the transmission of the medieval vernacular culture, and textual criticism, proceeding to the so-called Snorra Edda. This literary, political, grammatical and mythographic masterpiece marked the beginning of an ideological revival of the early local culture and its myths in 13th-century Scandinavia, and laid the foundations for a continuous reception of the past from the Baroque age to the present day.

L’esame verte su due prove, distinte diacronicamente. La prima è una relazione scritta, realizzata secondo criteri analoghi alla composizione di un capitolo di tesi di Laurea Magistrale con (eventuali) note a pie’ di pagina e indicazione della bibliografia e/o sitografia utilizzate e citate. A ogni partecipante sarà distribuito, all’inizio delle lezioni, materiale incentrato sul tema del corso e sul quale, entro la fine del ciclo di lezioni, dovrà produrre in forma scritta (non oltre fine novembre 2020) e presentare oralmente (max. 20 min.) un elaborato. Questo lavoro, che concorre alla valutazione finale, oscillerà tra 25.000-30.000 battute (salvo eventuali approfondimenti facoltativi): il corpo del font è 12 nel testo, 10 nelle citazioni lunghe (rientrate di 1 cm., a destra e a sinistra) e 10 nelle note. Ogni capo-rigo (salvo i titoli dei paragrafi e il primo rigo che a questi segue) dovrà essere rientrato di 0,5 cm. (note comprese); la spaziatura di interlinea 1,15. La relazione è presentata obbligatoriamente a fine corso davanti a tutta la classe ed è un requisito fondamentale per sostenere l’esame col programma da frequentante. Essa deve rispettare i criteri di correttezza ortografica e grammaticale, esibire chiarezza espressiva e, se possibile, contenere un certo grado di rielaborazione personale. La seconda prova consiste in un colloquio orale sul modulo svolto frontalmente dal docente e teso a valutare le capacità critiche e metodologiche matu-rate attraverso il confronto con i testi oggetto del corso. Saranno pertanto valutate con attenzione le competenze specifiche acquisite, la pertinenza argomentativa o la ripetizione mnemonica con la quale queste verranno presentate. Lacune formative, padronanza espressiva, rielaborazione matura, scarso orientamento nei testi o linguaggio inappropriato sono tutti fattori che concorreranno alla valutazione finale.
La conoscenza mnemonica e superficiale degli argomenti, unita a un linguaggio inappropriato o confuso, non permettono di raggiungere una votazione finale brillante.
18-21 conoscenza prevalentemente o esclusivamente descrittiva, espressa in un linguaggio modesto e/o inadeguato; scarsa chiarezza e limitata organizzazione del pensiero; approfondimento ridotto o nullo
22-25 discreta conoscenza della materia e dei problemi, che riflettono applicazione ma che sono riferiti talora in un linguaggio non sempre appropriato e di tono colloquiale/ familiare; tracce di una rielaborazione autonoma delle questioni studiate, con una certa abilità analitica
26-29 buona conoscenza delle problematiche connesse con la materia; l'espressione è coerente e appropriata, con un livello di riflessione decisamente elevato, con capacità esemplificative e critiche
30-30L ottima conoscenza e sicurezza di espressione, con una rielaborazione autonoma e disinvolta dei vari argomenti e senza alcuna difficoltà nel passaggio da questioni generali a particolari; il linguaggio espressivo è accurato e di livello superiore.
The examination consists of two single tests:
- A) a written report,
- B) an oral examination.
The written report (deadline: end of November 2020) is based on material received at the beginning of the academic year and related to the course topic. It must range between approximately 25,000-30.000 characters and has to meet the same requirements as those expected for a chapter of an M.A. thesis (footnotes, indication of authorial references, and/or collection of websites used and cited). The report, submitted orally to the whole class, must be correct in spelling and grammar, exhibiting clarity and, if possible, a certain degree of personal reflection. The oral examination aims at evaluating any critical skills developed through the course; to this end, the relevance of argumentation or mnemonic repetition will be carefully assessed. Training gaps, mastery of expression, careful reworking, little mastery in texts, or inappropriate language are all crucial factors that will concur to the final evaluation.
During the oral examination, during the student must be able to demonstrate her/his knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with the property of the expression.
Importance will be paid to the possession of an organic framework of the basic elements, together with an expressive mastery. The mnemonic and superficial knowledge of the arguments, together with an inappropriate or confusing language, does not allow to reach a brilliant final mark.
18-21 predominantly or exclusively descriptive knowledge, expressed in a modest and / or inadequate language; lack of clarity and limited organization of thought;
22-25 discrete knowledge of the subject and of the problems, which reflect application but which are sometimes referred to in a language which is not always appropriate and of a colloquial / familiar tone; traces of an autonomous re-elaboration of the studied issues, with a certain analytical ability
26-29 (very) good knowledge of issues related to the subject; the expression is coherent and appropriate, with a high level of reflection, with exemplary and critical capacities
30-30L excellent knowledge and security of expression, with an autonomous reworking of the various topics and without any difficulty in the transition from general to specific issues; the expressive language is accurate and of a high standard
