Al termine del corso, lo studente avrà acquisito una conoscenza diretta e approfondita riguardante:
- statuto, finalità comunicative e politiche discorsive soggiacenti all’Ecologia letteraria, alla giustizia distributiva, al bioegalitarismo e all’etica del postumanesimo
- ricchezza dei dibattiti e variegato ambito terminologico che contrassegnano questo tipo di produzione
- paradigmi, ramificazioni transdisciplinari e assiologie della ecofiction
- metodologie d’analisi adeguate e aggiornate in relazione al genere di riferimento
- vari contesti geopolitici e ambientali con cui gli autori analizzati hanno dialogato
At the end of this course, students will be expected to achieve a high level of knowledge regarding
- the ciphers, communicative goals and discursive policies underlying Literary Ecology as well as the current notions of distributive justice, bioegalitarianism and a posthuman ethic
- the fruitful debates and stratified terminology associated with this literary production
- a series of paradigms, transdisciplinary routes and axiologies informing ecofiction
- updated critical tools and methodologies
- the geopolitical and environmental contexts referred to or discussed by the authors that have been analysed
- Per l'accertamento delle conoscenze si prevede la possibilità di riscontri in itinere (oral reports, in italiano o in inglese) e di eventuali momenti seminariali incentrati su testi e autori inseriti in programma (approfondimenti, messe a fuoco analitiche, valutazioni sulla bibliografia critica)
- Coronamento di questi riscontri sarà l'esame finale, nella forma di un colloquio orale che riguarderà contestualmente le due parti del programma
- Il colloquio si svolgerà di norma in italiano, con alcune domande in lingua inglese. Lo studente potrà altresì scegliere di svolgere l’esame interamente in inglese
During classes, students are encouraged to actively participate in the learning process and engage with the course material through short discussions. They may also, on a voluntary basis, present oral reports and case-based research which will demonstrate their level of factual knowledge and comprehension. Such reports may concern the authors or the primary as well as secondary texts included in the syllabus
- This kind of participation will be taken into account in view of the final oral exam, which will focus on both Module A and Module B
- Foreign students may choose to take the exam in English or in Italian
Durante il corso, lo studente maturerà la capacità di:
- argomentare con competenza e svolgere in autonomia ricerche dettagliate inerenti sia ai principi della comunicazione letteraria (substrato simbolico o archetipico del testo, connotatività, istanze, canali, codici, dimensione referenziale e intertestuale), sia alle specificità e alla fenomenologia di una scrittura narrativa sensibile alle questioni ecologiche, in ottica di giustizia sociale e post-antropocentrica
- individuare chiavi di lettura e applicare metodologie critiche adeguate
- contestualizzare in modo appropriato e consapevole una serie di autori, opere e tematiche
- articolare l’analisi di opere e contesti con padronanza di registro e sicurezza di approccio nei confronti di testi scritti in una lingua diversa dall’italiano
During the course activities, students will acquire skills allowing them to
- properly discuss and investigate in detail both the principles and dynamics of literary communication (symbols, archetypes, connotation, channels, codes, the spheres of referentiality and intertextuality) and the phenomenology of a kind of fiction that deals with ecological questions from the perspectives of social justice and post- anthropocentrism
- recognise crucial tenets and choose the appropriate critical tools and methodologies
- suitably contextualise a series of authors, works and topics
- draw on the pertinent register when examining works and contexts
La verifica delle capacità acquisite o maturate si concentrerà soprattutto in sede di esame finale, ma si prevedono momenti di riscontro attraverso oral reports, in italiano o in inglese, a scelta dello studente e riguardanti testi e autori inseriti in programma, con specifici riferimenti metodologici alle letture critiche.

Durante il corso, lo studente
- svilupperà o affinerà una sensibilità nei confronti dei processi comunicativi e della densità semantica e simbolica del discorso letterario
- rivolgerà un'attenzione particolare a questioni legate alla politica discorsiva dell’Ecologia letteraria e al suo dialogo transdisciplinare
- si confronterà con maggiore consapevolezza e competenza con i vari livelli del dialogo istituito dall’autore o dall’opera letteraria con la complessità di determinati contesti situazionali
- sarà stimolato a vagliare e ponderare l’apporto degli studi critici sull’argomento del corso, anche in direzione di ulteriori ricerche autonome
During the course activities, students are expected to
- develop a deep awareness of the semantic and symbolic relevance of literature and its communicative processes
- pay attention to questions and issues informing the discursive policies of Literary Ecology and its transdisciplinary imprint
- consciously deal with the different levels of the dialogue involving authors or literary works and the complexity of specific situational contexts
- fully grasp the relevance of updated studies that investigate and showcase ecocritical trends, so as to be able to engage in further autonomous research
Oltre che in sede di esame finale, durante i momenti di interazione seminariale si terrà conto del grado di maturazione dello studente, ovvero del suo interesse, del coinvolgimento attivo e dell'impegno volti a inquadrare gli autori e i testi di riferimento in modo lucido e criticamente consapevole.
- During classes, students will be able to show their involvement, growth in cognitive understanding and critical sensibility through active participation in discussions and/or the presentation of oral reports and case-based research on the authors and texts included in the syllabus
- The conclusive assessment will take place through a final oral exam
- Foreign students may choose to take this exam in English or in Italian
Lo studente dovrebbe possedere una buona padronanza della lingua inglese e un’adeguata conoscenza dei fondamenti della storia letteraria britannica, soprattutto quella moderna e contemporanea, inclusi i suoi vari contesti storici e culturali.
This course requires a good command of the Italian and the English language. An adequate knowledge of the history of English literature and its contexts (especially during the modern and contemporary age) is also recommended.
Mentre si frequentano le lezioni di questo corso, è utile seguire anche i corsi di Lingua inglese previsti per la laurea magistrale.

MODULO A
“Per un’ecologia del vivere: soggetti, comunità e ambienti nella narrativa in inglese tra Novecento e Terzo Millennio”
Descrizione:
Il corso intende delineare una panoramica in grado di mettere a fuoco nodi tematici, questioni etiche e approcci esegetici inerenti all’Ecologia letteraria, lungo un arco diacronico che riguarda sia, in senso stretto, le opere oggetto d’analisi, sia una serie di orientamenti ideologici, dalle Environmental Humanities fino agli sviluppi più recenti del Material Ecocriticism e dei Posthuman Studies. Le riflessioni toccheranno dunque temi quali l’ecologia delle ‘esistenze interconnesse’, il rispetto per la terra e gli equilibri naturali, il vegetarianesimo, la biocultura, il rapporto o l’ibridazione tra soggetto umano e animale, i cambiamenti climatici e l’apocalisse ambientale, la multispecies justice e il becoming-with. Letture complementari e di approfondimento
Descrizione: Questa seconda parte del programma, che lo studente dovrà preparare in modo autonomo, consiste nello studio di testi teorico-argomentativi grazie ai quali sarà possibile approfondire la complessa tematica dell’‘ecologia del vivere’. Course structure:
This course of English Literature B (54 hours) is structured into two units, which are both mandatory:
- Module A: “Towards an Ecology of Living: Subjects, Communities and Environments in Anglophone Fiction from the Twentieth Century to the Third Millennium”
- Module B: Further reading material
MODULE A
Title: “Towards an Ecology of Living: Subjects, Communities and Environments in Anglophone Fiction from the Twentieth Century to the Third Millennium”
Topic: The aim of this course is to provide an overview of the main themes, ethical issues and interpretative criteria associated with Literary Ecology, over a time span referring to the works that will be analysed as well as to ideological orientations that look at the Environmental Humanities and their more recent developments (Material Ecocriticism and the Posthuman Studies). Attention will be paid to a variety of aspects, i.e. the ecology of an ‘interconnected existence’, the respect for the land and a harmonious natural balance, vegetarianism, bioculture, the relationship or hybridisation between human and animal subjects, climate change and environmental catastrophe, the notions of ‘multispecies justice’ and ‘becoming-with’. MODULE B
Further reading material
Description: This second unit consists in an individual learning experience that students are required to tackle. The three works included in the reading list are to be approached as tools for a further investigation of the complex theme of the ‘ecology of living’. Oltre a eventuali prove intermedie, di cui si terrà conto per la valutazione, lo studente dovrà sostenere un esame finale in forma di colloquio orale con la docente responsabile del corso, volto ad accertare le conoscenze, le capacità e i comportamenti acquisiti nell'ambito sia del Modulo A, sia del Modulo B
- Il colloquio, da tenersi nel corso dei regolari appelli d’esame, durerà mediamente 30/45 minuti e non potrà ritenersi superato in caso di palesi lacune su parti del programma, di una scarsa capacità riflessiva e argomentativa e di evidenti carenze linguistiche
- Il colloquio si svolgerà prevalentemente in italiano, con alcune domande in lingua inglese. Lo studente potrà altresì scegliere di svolgere l’esame interamente in inglese
Students will be assessed through a final oral examination during one of the scheduled sessions throughout the exam period. Questions in Italian will be followed by a few ones in English, although foreign students may take the whole exam in English
- Students may also, on a voluntary basis, take active part during lectures and present oral reports and case-based research, which will be positively taken into account in view of the final exam
- The final exam will cover both Module A and B and will test the students' level of knowledge, acquired skills and behaviours as illustrated in the previous sections of the syllabus. It will be 30/45 minutes long
Il corso non prevede stage né tirocini.
This course includes no specific training connected with work placement.
- Il corso si terrà nel II semestre 2021-22. Data inizio lezioni: lunedì 28 febbraio 2022
- Le lezioni si svolgeranno in presenza, tre volte a settimana: Lunedì (Curini D1), Martedì (Curini A4) e Venerdì (Ricci 10) ore 16.00-17.30
- La Commissione d’esame è così composta: Proff. Laura Giovannelli (Presidente), Roberta Ferrari e Simona Beccone (Membri), Fausto Ciompi (Membro supplente)
- This course will take place in the SECOND SEMESTER 2021/22. Lessons will start on 28 February 2022.
- The time-schedule will be six academic hours per week (face-to-face lectures): Mondays (Curini D1), Tuesdays (Curini A4), Fridays (Ricci 10) at 4 pm-5.30 pm
