  • mission of libraries (digital or not) and their services
  • impact of information technology on the organization and services offered by libraries (and archives)
  • organization of the content of a library
  • interaction between libraries and the information available in the Web
  • possible roles of the “information professionals”

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The acquired knowledge will be verified during the oral examination through the level of competence shown about the topics of the course, and through the practical application of this knowledge in the project (design and development of a small digital library).

At the end of the course the student will be able to:

  • understand the main issues related to the design and implementation of a digital library
  • organize contents and services of a digtal library
  • evaluate the services offered by a digital library
  • evaluate the effects of the interaction between digital libraries and the information available in the Web

Assessment criteria of skills

The acquired skills will be verified mainly through the assessment of the digital library implemented in the project. The assessment will be mainly based on the following aspects: richness of the content (variety, not quantity), functionality for searching and browsing, ease of use and “look and feel”.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

Students are expected to have a basic understanding of computer fundamentals, networking fundamentals and representation of digital information.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

(Digital) Libraries in the time of the Web

The arrival of computer technology within libraries, a first time about 50 years ago with the online catalogues (OPACs) and then, about 30 years ago, with the arrival of the Internet and the Web, has started an evolution (sometimes a forced one) in the architecture of the Information Systems supporting libraries. This evolution has introduced new requirements and new functionality in the collection and management of the library content, as well as in the access to the information and in the provision of user services.

The course will compare this evolution of the libraries with a similar evolution of technologies and functionality that has happened in the Web in the last 30 years, to cope with the management, access and retrieval of the ever increasing amount of information available in the Web.

At the same time, the course will provide a broad overview of the interaction between technology and libraries, and how this interaction has evolved over time. This interaction can be seen at two levels: a conceptual one (models, ontologies) and a practical one (tools, services), thereby providing a better understanding of the basic principles underlying librarianship, and (hopefully) a better mental attitude to investigate new topics and to explore new avenues.

An integral part of the course will be a hands-on laboratory to learn how to design and implement a small personal digital library using the Open Source software Greenstone (or other software agreed upon with the teacher).

Bibliografia e materiale didattico

- Ian Witten, David Bainbridge, David M. Nichols, How to build a Digital Library, Morgan Kaufmann, 2010 (Second Edition), ISBN 978-0-12-374857-7

Non-attending students info

The content of the course and the final grading are the same for students either attending or not attending the teacher’s lessons. The learning material (slides used during the lessons and suggested readings) are made available on the course Web site, and they are enough for an adequate preparation for the oral examination and for the project.

In addition, the teacher is available (on request) to provide additional explanations and clarifications.

Assessment methods

The final grade will be based on an oral examination and a project.

The oral examination will assess the knowledge and understanding of the topics presented during the course and will contribute to the final grade for about two thirds.

The project consists in the design and implementation of a (small) digital library, developed with the Greenstone system (Open Source software downloadable from the Web) or any other software agreed upon with the teacher. The assessment of the project, to be done at or before the oral examination, will contribute to the final grade for about one third. The project can be carried on also in a small team, with three persons at most. If the project was developed by a team, the members of the team can sustain the oral examination independently one from the other.
