Conoscenze

MECHANICS OF SMART MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES

Knowledge

MECHANICS OF SMART MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES

The course objective is to provide students with basic knowledge and methodological tools to model the behavior of smart materials and elastic structures in the regime of large deformations. This knowledge and tools will be applied to the study of prototypical structures on interest in the field of robotics and biomedical engineering.

SOFT ROBOTICS TECHNOLOGIES

The course aims at providing advanced knowledge on soft robotics and soft mechatronic technologies through the study and use of soft/compliant/flexible materials for the development of bionic/biorobotic devices. The student will be introduced to advanced design principles (e.g. bioinspiration and morphological computation) and tools (e.g. FEM) also through hands-on lab activities.

Modalità di verifica delle conoscenze

MECHANICS OF SMART MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES

Assessment criteria of knowledge

MECHANICS OF SMART MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES

Solution of numerical exercises based on the application of methods and tools explained during the course.

SOFT ROBOTICS TECHNOLOGIES

The knowledge assessment will take place through the oral exam at each exam session. There is no official testing during lessons, but students will be asked to answer questions on issues that have already been faced, and in dealing with practical sessions, students will have to prove that they have acquired the basic theoretical knowledge.

Capacità

MECHANICS OF SMART MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES

The course will transfer the skills to conduct a comparative analysis and to choose the most appropriate innovative technologies for specific technical problems. In addition, through laboratory sessions, students will acquire the manual use of some laboratory tools (signal generators, voltage amplifiers, mechanical characterization machines, furnace) and materials (silicones, shape memory alloys, parafilm). Finally, students will be able to design and simulate simple non-linear mechanical problems through the use of commercial software for finite element analysis.

Assessment criteria of skills

MECHANICS OF SMART MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES

Discussion in class during problem solving sessions and lectures. Final exam based on the solution of problems and exercises.

SOFT ROBOTICS TECHNOLOGIES

Skill assessment will be carried out through the practical implementation of acquired concepts. There will be both hands-on activities where students will design and manufacture small devices with their hands, and computer exercises where students will have to solve assigned problems using the dedicated analysis software.

Comportamenti

MECHANICS OF SMART MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES

Behaviors

MECHANICS OF SMART MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES

In classical applications of structural mechanics (civil, mechanical, naval, aeronautical engineering) design and safety criteria typically require that equilibrium configurations under loads should be close to the initial ones, and that structures operate in the regime of small displacements and deformations. In this course the student will learn the new possibilities that are opened by exploiting the regime of large deformations in a creative and controlled manner, in order to realize deployable structure that can change conformation in a dramatic way between a rest state and a deployed state. A concrete example of a biomedical device exploiting this principle is that of cardiovascular stents.

SOFT ROBOTICS TECHNOLOGIES

Students will acquire the right method to deal with the design of highly deformable mechanical structures and will be aware of the correct use of tools and materials for the implementation of prototypes for experimental validation.

Modalità di verifica dei comportamenti

MECHANICS OF SMART MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES

Discussioni in classe durante lo svolgimento delle lezioni. Risoluzione di alcuni problemi modello.

SOFT ROBOTICS TECHNOLOGIES
