Conoscenze

Knowledge

The course aims to provide students with the knowledge about the main challenges, methods and tools for the design, experimental evaluation and assessment of powered robotic prostheses and exoskeletons. The course also aims to provide students with the knowledge of the architecture of the microcontroller and of its most relevant peripherals for the design of robotic systems. Particular emphasis is placed towards the mechatronic design methods, including the integration of bidirectional Human-Machine-Interfaces, and the development of the embedded control of prostheses and exoskeleton.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The gained knowledge is verified by means of periodic class hands-on exercises and by the final exam. The latter consists, for the Artificial Limbs module, of a project work (in teams, using the microcontroller) a team and individual discussion of the project and an oral exam pertaining the theoretical topics seen during the course. With regards to the Robotics Exoskeletons module, the verification will rely on a test to be executed with the support of a PC and/or an interview.

– mostrerà sufficienti capacità di analisi delle problematiche riguardanti la progettazione di sistemi robotici esoscheletrici;

– mostrerà sufficiente capacità di elaborare soluzioni efficaci (in ambiente Labview) a tipiche problematiche del controllo real-time di robot esoscheletrici;

Assessment methods

With regards to the module “Prostheses” the exam comprises of a project work (in teams, using the microcontroller) with discussion and an oral exam. The project/device is presented by the team, then discussed individually (with each one in the team). The quality of the project plus the individual discussion on the project makes the "project mark" (one for each student). If the project is unacceptable (insufficient) the discussion does not take place and the team will come at a later exam session with the same project. Similarly, if the project can be improved (barely sufficient) students will be invited to come later with a better project (each student can decide for himself/herself to come back later or to discuss it and go on with the exam). If the project is fine, after the individual discussion, each student gets the "project mark". Not accepting this implies to come at a later exam session with the same project. The "project mark" is combined with the assessment of the oral exam after answering to questions on the program.

As it regards the “Exoskeletons” module, the examination will consist of a two-phase interview. During the first phase students will be challenged with a control problem to be solved by means of the development of Labview code. During the second phase, students will be challenged with questions on the topics treated during the lecture-style classes. Expected duration for the first phase is 2 hours. Expected duration for the second phase is 20 minutes.

Examination will be passed if students will:

– show sufficient skills in the analysis of major design challenges of robotic exoskeletons;

– show sufficient skills in the development of effective Labview code for the real-time control of a robotic exoskeleton;

– show sufficient skills in the analysis of the performance of the developed code.
