Conoscenze

Knowledge

The course objective is to provide students with knowledge and methodological tools typical of robotics in the surgical/diagnostic domain, of targeted therapies based on micro/nano smart materials and of the design of artificial and bioartificial organs and tissues.

In particular, in the “Robotics for minimally invasive and targeted therapy” module, the student will gather knowledge and methodologies concerning the design of robots and intelligent instruments for surgery and interventional tasks at different scales. The student will be able to recognize the most significant features of the most suitable robotic systems for each pathological condition, taking into consideration the different anatomical areas, the different access requirements and the required interventional procedures. Thanks to the analysis of the surgical robots available in the teacher’s Institute, the students will be able to relate the theoretical knowledge with real practical scenarios. Base knowledge about COMSOL Multiphysics software will be provided by means of specific lessons and practical sessions.

In the “Bionic organs and tissues” module, the student will initially gather basic knowledge and methodologies concerning cell and molecular biology (also thanks to lab practical activities). Afterwards, he/she will acquire specific competences and methodologies concerning the design of artificial and bioartificial organs and tissues. In particular, some organs (pancreas and heart), apparatus (the urinary system) and tissues (skeletal muscle and cartilage) will be examined, by analyzing approaches and technologies used for their substitution or regeneration.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

In the “Robotics for minimally invasive and targeted therapy” module, the teacher will invite the students to interact suggesting proper solutions to specific questions that will be presented during the lessons. Several lessons are organized with a specific hands-on part where surgical robots or image-guided systems will be presented to the students. During these presentations, usually carried out together with PhD students and post-doc, the teacher will ask proper questions to the students for evaluating if the preparatory theoretical concepts have been comprehended and if they are able to move these concepts into the proposed practical experiences.

In the “Bionic organs and tissues” module, an oral exam will aim to assess the knowledge acquired. During the exam, questions will be asked on the topics touched during the course.
