Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

In exile: languages and poetics of non-belonging in the German-speaking literature of the 20th and 21st centuries A substantial part of the German-speaking literature of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries has been correctly defined as literature of exile (Exilliteratur) because it was written by German and Austrian authors fleeing the National Socialist (or, subsequently, the Communist) regime, or by writers who, emigrated for political or economic reasons to German-speaking countries from other parts of the world, have chosen German as their writing language. The exile, however, does not end in this historical and biographical datum and, with reference to literature, it should rather be understood in its purely textual and poetic dimension which manifests itself in the many aesthetic, literary and linguistic declinations that have shaped and enriched the forms and the languages of German-speaking literary writing up to our contemporaneity. The course is aimed at the study of these declinations and the poetics of non-belonging that they convey. By analyzing a selection of particularly significant texts, some constellations of characters and narrative situations will be taken into consideration, as well as peculiar writing strategies. In particular, we will analyze the languages related to the poetics of memory, the ironic distance and its mingling with forms of melancholy, political criticism and forms of resistance to power and the violence of history, to the utopian impulse and the search for freedom. The course will also host a conference through which attention will be focused on important translation issues related to the restitution into Italian of the languages of German-speaking literature of non-belonging. Finally, a conference in German language dedicated to Heimatlosigkeit in the Hebrew-German literature of the twentieth century (5-6 October) will allow students to deepen some topics related to the course thanks to the reports of expert and internationally recognized scholars.

N.B. The texts that will be treated in class are indicated below. For the exams, listening to Thomas Mann's radio speeches (no. 14) and reading the entire German language are requireda) of the texts no. 6 and 8,b) a novel chosen from among those indicated in numbers 1-3c) a novel chosen from among those indicated in numbers 4-5d) two texts chosen from those indicated in numbers 9-13.
