Al termine del corso, lo studente avrà acquisito conoscenze fondamentali su:
- storia della letteratura inglese dal Settecento alla contemporaneità, con i suoi protagonisti, le evoluzioni e i movimenti più significativi
- una selezione di opere di vari periodi e generi, con un approfondimento più sistematico sulle cifre stilistico-formali, gli sviluppi tematici e l’immaginario figurale della narrativa gotica tardo-vittoriana
- paradigmi, problematiche e contesti rilevanti per gli ambiti letterari investigati, inquadrati con consapevolezza critica, competenze linguistiche (italiano e inglese), strumenti metodologici aggiornati e adeguati
The students who successfully complete this course are expected to acquire a general knowledge of:
- the main literary movements and cultural developments, authors and works relating to the history of English Literature from the eighteenth century to the contemporary age
- a selection of texts belonging to different periods and genres, with a deeper focus on the stylistic traits, thematic developments and the imaginary of late-Victorian gothic fiction
- a series of relevant topics, issues and contexts, which the students will be able to discuss with critical and linguistic awareness as well as through updated methodological approaches
Oltre ad includere prove intermedie (vd. sezioni successive), la verifica delle conoscenze acquisite sarà oggetto dell’esame finale, consistente in un colloquio in cui si accerterà il raggiungimento dei seguenti obiettivi:
- piena familiarità con i contenuti e con l’impianto argomentativo delle due parti costituenti il programma (Parte monografica e Studio della storia della letteratura)
- conoscenza inerente ai testi, letti, tradotti oralmente dall’inglese e analizzati con strumenti teorici e metodologici adeguati
In addition to periodical evaluation tests (see the following sections), the assessment of acquired knowledge takes place through a final oral exam in which students are to demonstrate their familiarity with the course material, especially primary sources. During the examination, they will be asked to analyze a few excerpts from those sources. The final exam will also verify:
- the student’s ability to explain and discuss the course contents thoughtfully and with propriety of expression
- the student’s critical awareness of literary genres and terminology as well as of the cultural framework and developments of English Literature across the centuries
The final oral exam will take into equal account the results of the activities relating to Part I (Core Module) and Part II (the course unit centred on the History of Literature from the eighteenth century to the contemporary age), which are both mandatory. The exam can be taken in any of the scheduled sessions throughout the regular exam period
Al termine del corso, lo studente sarà in grado di:
- delineare in modo sufficientemente autonomo un'attenta mappa concettuale di contenuti, sviluppi e importanti fenomenologie della storia della letteratura inglese dal Settecento alla contemporaneità, con una particolare focalizzazione sulla narrativa dell'Ottocento
- affiancare a questo inquadramento cognitivo un affinamento del registro stilistico-lessicale e della capacità di leggere e tradurre una selezione di opere scritte in inglese
- identificare orientamenti ermeneutici essenziali nell’ambito dell'esegesi letteraria
- By the end of the course, students will have developed intellectual skills such as the ability to draw a conceptual map of the evolutions, interrelations, and phenomenologies informing the History of English Literature from the eighteenth century to the contemporary age
- They will also be able to provide a detailed illustration of the structure and developments of nineteenth-century fiction
- This cognitive framing skill will be accompanied by an acquaintance with the appropriate linguistic and stylistic registers and the strengthening of hermeneutic competence in the literary field
Oltre che in sede di esame finale, la verifica delle capacità analitiche, critico-argomentative e di decodifica dei testi in lingua originale avrà luogo attraverso prove intermedie. In conformità con il progetto di eccellenza del Dipartimento FiLeLi e gli obiettivi di CECIL (Centro d’Eccellenza per il Contrasto all’Impoverimento Linguistico), queste prove coinvolgeranno gli studenti frequentanti e consisteranno in relazioni scritte o orali, in italiano, su autori, testi e periodi inseriti in programma. As a complement to the final oral exam, the assessment of the analytical, critical and linguistic skills will also be carried out through periodical evaluation tests. In line with the Excellence Project of the Department of Philology, Literature and Linguistics and the goals of CECIL (Centro d’Eccellenza per il Contrasto all’Impoverimento Linguistico), these tests will involve attending students and consist in written or oral reports dealing with authors, texts and periods covered by the syllabus. These reports, which foreign students might choose to present in English, will be revised by the course lecturer and discussed in class
Al termine del corso, lo studente avrà sviluppato e affinato:
- capacità ermeneutiche e di contestualizzazione storico-culturale
- una sensibilità al linguaggio, alle istanze e alle modalità rappresentative/comunicative della letteratura
- un approccio consapevole alla decodifica linguistico-stilistica e narratologica dei testi
By the end of the course, students are expected to refine their analytical and evaluating criteria and successfully engage with commentaries on the language and the representational/communicative modes of literary writing. They will also acquire an awareness of how to investigate texts through a narratological perspective
Oltre che in sede di esame finale, la verifica dell’acquisizione o maturazione di comportamenti inerenti alle capacità ermeneutiche, di contestualizzazione e decodifica dei testi in lingua originale avrà luogo attraverso prove intermedie. In conformità con il progetto di eccellenza del Dipartimento FiLeLi e gli obiettivi di CECIL, queste prove coinvolgeranno gli studenti frequentanti e consisteranno in relazioni scritte o orali, in italiano, su autori, testi e periodi inseriti in programma. The overall assessment of the students’ behaviours (accuracy, responsibility, individual study) will be confirmed and ratified through the final oral exam

Students who attend this course should have an inclination for the humanities, especially literary studies. Since both the primary and secondary texts listed in the syllabus are in English, they should also have a basic knowledge of this language

The teaching methods consist in

Il programma di questo insegnamento da 9 CFU (54 ore di lezioni frontali) si compone di due parti distinte, entrambe obbligatorie e articolate nel modo seguente:
- PARTE MONOGRAFICA: “‘I fear that the ghost exists’: personalità sdoppiate, presenze spettrali e vampiresche nella narrativa tardo-vittoriana”
- STUDIO DELLA STORIA DELLA LETTERATURA E TESTI: lezioni propedeutiche allo studio della storia della letteratura inglese dal Settecento alla contemporaneità (periodizzazione, contesti, inquadramento di autori e opere), ambito che lo studente dovrà poi analizzare e approfondire in modo autonomo, avvalendosi del manuale di storia letteraria inserito in programma
Parte monografica: “‘I fear that the ghost exists’: personalità sdoppiate, presenze spettrali e vampiresche nella narrativa tardo-vittoriana”
Descrizione: Il corso si aprirà con alcune lezioni di carattere teorico-metodologico (principî di narratologia) e un’introduzione al contesto storico-culturale di riferimento, coincidente con la fase matura della Victorian Age e la fioritura di una produzione letteraria gravitante intorno a temi, soggetti e atmosfere perturbanti e gotico-spettrali. L’analisi testuale verterà su una selezione di opere a firma di Oscar Wilde, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu e Bram Stoker, delle quali si indagheranno dinamiche, processi semiotici e topoi connessi al doppio e al substrato metaforico sotteso alle apparizioni maligne, fantasmatiche e vampiresche. Studio della storia della letteratura e testi
Descrizione: Il corso si concluderà con alcune delucidazioni e indicazioni metodologiche utili per lo studio della storia letteraria inglese dal Settecento ai giorni nostri. Gli studenti sono tenuti ad acquisire e approfondire in autonomia le conoscenze richieste avvalendosi del manuale e dei testi specificamente indicati in programma. This course of English Literature I (Curriculum B), 9 credits, is structured into two different units, which are both mandatory:
- PART I (Core Module): although its specific content and reading lists change every year, this part can be described as monographic since it investigates a given period/genre and a circumscribed range of authors and poetical or prose works. It carries out a detailed analysis of such topics and output
- PART II (Literary History Outline): this second part aims at helping students to deal with issues, themes and movements crucially related to English Literature and its mainstream developments, from the eighteenth century to the contemporary age. Most of the titles (poems, novels, short stories, and plays) included in the required readings are introduced and discussed in a textual as well as extratextual perspective
Academic year 2023/24:
PART I: “‘I fear that the ghost exists’: doubles, ghosts, and vampires in late-Victorian fiction”
Description: This course will start with an introduction to the principles of narratology and the historical and cultural context of the late-Victorian Age. More specifically, it will investigate a literary production dealing with the uncanny and focusing on gothic, sinister atmospheres and themes. Attention will be drawn to some landmark works by Oscar Wilde, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, and Bram Stoker, along with a complex of meanings and topoi relating to the double and the metaphorical potential of evil apparitions, ghosts, and vampires [For further details, see Bibliography, Section 1]
PART II: Introduction to the study of the History of English Literature and to the contextualization of literary works, from the eighteenth century to the contemporary age. [For further details, see Bibliography, Section 2]

Per gli studenti che affrontano per la prima volta autori e aspetti della storia della letteratura inglese, si consiglia anche, come lettura complementare non obbligatoria (in aggiunta al manuale di Bertinetti, che è invece obbligatorio): F. Gozzi, La tradizione letteraria inglese dalle origini alla fine del ’900, Pisa, ETS, 2009, dal Capitolo 7 (“L’Età Augustea”) al Capitolo 14 (“Dagli anni Cinquanta alla fine del secolo”).

- Oltre alle prove intermedie, di cui si terrà conto per la valutazione, lo studente dovrà sostenere un esame finale in forma di colloquio all’interno delle regolari sessioni calendarizzate
- Il colloquio si terrà in massima parte in italiano, ma sarà integrato da: 1) una domanda in lingua inglese riguardante le opere letterarie analizzate; 2) lettura e traduzione simultanea di passi di queste stesse opere
- Il colloquio avrà una durata di 30/45 minuti e si articolerà in due momenti:
a/ domande inerenti agli autori, agli argomenti e alle opere affrontate nel corso monografico, con riscontri diretti su passi significativi dei testi primari (una domanda sarà in inglese)
b/ domande inerenti a periodizzazione, contesti, generi, movimenti e autori rappresentativi della letteratura inglese dal Settecento alla contemporaneità, con riscontri diretti sui passi delle opere primarie indicate nella bibliografia (sezione 2) della Parte istituzionale del programma
- La prova non è superata se il candidato non è in grado di articolare con sufficiente chiarezza argomentativa e/o profondità le tematiche e le problematiche principali inerenti all’analisi di autori, testi e periodi presi in esame; se mostra palesi lacune su contenuti e parti del programma; se non riesce a stabilire un confronto culturalmente consapevole e soddisfacente sul piano linguistico con testi scritti in inglese
The evaluation method consists in ongoing testing and a final oral exam, which foreign students may choose to take in Italian or in English, during one of the scheduled sessions throughout the regular exam period.
The oral exam will be 30/45 minutes long and it will unfold in two steps:
a/ a series of questions relating to the authors, topics, and works analyzed in Part I. The acquaintance with the primary texts listed in Section 1 of the Bibliography will also be ascertained
b/ a series of questions relating to the periods, contexts, genres, movements, and main authors connected with the History of English Literature from the eighteenth century to the contemporary age (Part II). The acquaintance with the primary texts listed in Section 2 of the Bibliography will also be ascertained.
Students will not pass the exam if they are unable to appropriately delve into the works' meaning and structure, into the main issues and topics involved or into the contexts of literary history itself. They must be familiar with all the course contents as well as with texts written in English
