Scopo principale del corso di Lingua inglese II è quello di fornire le conoscenze relative alle caratteristiche della lingua inglese a livello sintagmatico, frasale e testuale, con riferimento ai vari ambiti discorsivi e situazioni comunicative. Il corso è composto da due moduli: Modulo A (Dott.ssa Simi – 3 cfu) e Modulo B (Prof.ssa Mattiello – 6 cfu). Il corso prevede il raggiungimento del livello B2+ del Quadro Comune Europeo di Riferimento (QCER) per la conoscenza delle lingue. A questo fine, lo studente potrà, come parte del proprio lavoro individuale, integrare la propria preparazione seguendo le esercitazioni (lettorato) organizzate dal CLI presso il Dipartimento per il livello B2+.
The second-year English course aims to provide knowledge of the characteristics of the English language on the syntactic, structural, and textual levels, with particular reference to various discourse domains and communicative situations. The thematic course is made up of two modules: Module A (Dr. Simi – 3 cfu) and Module B (Prof. Mattiello – 6 cfu). By the end of the course, students are expected to reach the CEFR B2+ level of proficiency in English. Towards this objective, as part of their individual work, students can attend practical language classes (lettorato) organised by CLI for the Department for the B2+ level.
Il corso è composto da due parti: un corso tematico tenuto dalle docenti (Prof.ssa Elisa Mattiello e Dott.ssa Nicoletta Simi) e un corso di lingua strumentale tenuto da due lettori madrelingua (Dott.ssa Jennifer Fowler e Dott. Ivano Leone). Sia il corso tematico che il lettorato di livello B2+ hanno lo scopo di portare gli studenti al raggiungimento del livello di conoscenza dell’inglese necessario a ottenere i 9 crediti. Gli studenti dovranno dimostrare di possedere un livello di inglese B2+. Il corso tematico sarà tenuto nel primo semestre (settembre – dicembre) mentre il lettorato si terrà su due semestri (settembre – dicembre e febbraio – maggio).
Per il corretto completamento del corso, tutti gli studenti dovranno sostenere un esame scritto e un orale sui temi del corso. Due prove in itinere saranno offerte alla fine di ogni modulo (A e B) per gli studenti che abbiano seguito il 70% delle lezioni e che abbiano completato le attività proposte dalle docenti durante il corso. Gli studenti che non abbiano raggiunto il numero minimo di frequenze dovranno sostenere l’intero esame scritto.
L’esame scritto, composto da domande chiuse di varia tipologia, si svolge online sulla piattaforma Moodle. Il superamento dell’esame scritto è un prerequisito per poter sostenere il colloquio orale, che consisterà in domande mirate ad accertare la conoscenza degli aspetti teorici trattati nel corso.
The course is made up of two parts: a thematic course given by the lecturers (Prof. Elisa Mattiello and Dr. Nicoletta Simi) and language practice courses taught by two English speaking instructors (Dr. Jennifer Fowler and Dr. Ivano Leone). Both the course and the B2+ level language practice aim at bringing the participants to the required advanced level of proficiency in English necessary for obtaining 9 credits. Students are required to prove that they have the B2+ level of English (either by successfully passing the final language practice test or by presenting a recognised international certificate obtained in the prior 24 months). The thematic course will take place in the first term (September – December). The B2+ language practice classes will run for the two terms (September – December and February – May).
In order to complete the lecturers’ course and receive the course credits, all students are required to take a written and an oral assessment test focusing on the contents of the thematic course. Two partial assessment tests will be offered at the end of each module to students who will have attended classes on a regular basis (70%) and completed all the activities proposed by the lecturers throughout the course. Students who do not meet the attendance requirement for the end-of-module tests will have to sit a written exam.
The written exam is administered online on Moodle and contains various question types. A passing mark on the online written exam is a prerequisite to sit for the oral exam, which will consist of a few questions focusing on the theoretical aspects of the course.
Essere capaci di 1) distinguere e analizzare le strutture della lingua inglese a livello sintattico, 2) riconoscere e analizzare vari tipi di testi a livello strutturale, discorsivo e retorico, anche nell’ambito di varie situazioni comunicative, e 3) essere in grado di comprendere e produrre comunicazioni scritte e orali in lingua inglese a livello B2+ del QCER.
Be able to 1) distinguish and analyse the structural features of English language sentences on the syntactic level, 2) analyse various types of texts at the structural, discursive, and rhetorical levels in various communicative situations, and 3) be able to understand and produce both written and oral communication in English at the B2+ level of the CEFR.

Dopo aver superato l’esame del corso, gli studenti saranno in grado di comprendere e produrre testi scritti e orali che trattano argomenti linguistici (a livello B2+), nonché di analizzare testi originali applicando le conoscenze acquisite.
After passing the course exam, students will be able to produce written and oral texts that deal with topics of linguistics (at the B2+ level), and analyse original texts by applying their acquired knowledge.
I comportamenti saranno verificati tramite la presentazione e discussione dei testi analizzati durante le lezioni e in sede dell’esame scritto seguito dal colloquio orale conclusivo.

Il corso di Lingua Inglese II si intitola “From phrases to texts to discourse” e si svolge nel primo semestre. Gli argomenti includeranno la sintassi della lingua inglese, con particolare riferimento agli aspetti formali, funzionali e fraseologici. Inoltre, si approfondiranno le caratteristiche dei testi e delle tipologie testuali, soffermandosi su vari argomenti quali coesione e coerenza, anafora e catafora, parallelismo, sostituzione ed ellissi, nominalizzazione, collocazione, intertestualità ed elementi retorici dei testi. Si affronteranno anche i tratti distintivi del linguaggio scritto vs parlato, nonché le caratteristiche dei testi utilizzati in vari ambiti discorsivi, ad esempio il giornalismo, la pubblicità, la comunicazione aziendale e i social media.
The second-year English course is entitled “From phrases to texts to discourse” and takes place during the first semester. It introduces the features of English syntax, with particular attention to formal, functional, and phraseological aspects. It also includes features of English texts and text types, focusing on topics such as cohesion and coherence, anaphor and cataphor, parallelism, substitution and ellipsis, nominalisation, collocation, intertextuality, and rhetorical elements of texts. In addition, it deals with the distinctive features of spoken vs written language, as well as characteristics of texts used in special communicative situations such as journalism, advertising, business communication and social media.

L’esame finale del corso tematico verrà sostenuto durante gli appelli e consisterà in un esame scritto e un colloquio orale. Entrambe le parti vertono sui contenuti del corso. L’esame scritto, composto da domande chiuse di varia tipologia, sarà svolto sulla piattaforma Moodle. Il superamento dell’esame scritto è un prerequisito per poter sostenere il colloquio orale, che consisterà in domande per verificare la conoscenza e approfondire gli aspetti teorici del corso.
Per i frequentanti (70% delle presenze), ci saranno due prove in itinere sostitutive dell’esame scritto se superate. Gli studenti che hanno superato le prove in itinere alla fine dei due Moduli (A e B) non dovranno sostenere l’esame scritto.
Gli studenti potranno sostenere l’esame scritto relativo al corso del docente anche prima di aver superato le prove relative alle esercitazioni (lettorato), in gennaio o febbraio. Nel caso in cui ritengano di possedere il livello B2+ nell’abilità dello speaking, potranno sostenere anche l’orale; in alternativa, sosterranno l’orale a giugno dopo aver superato le prove delle esercitazioni. Qualora il livello di inglese parlato fosse adeguato per superare l’esame del docente, gli studenti dovranno comunque fare la verifica delle esercitazioni per accertare le competenze nelle quattro abilità linguistiche (reading, writing, listening, speaking). Chi supera lo scritto su Moodle e viene valutato negativamente all’orale, dovrà ripetere anche lo scritto. Il risultato dell’esame del corso ha validità di DUE anni.
Le esercitazioni a livello B2+ sono svolte da Collaboratori ed Esperti Linguistici (CEL) per due semestri e mirano a potenziare le quattro abilità linguistiche (cognomi A-K - Dott.ssa Jennifer Mary Fowler; cognomi L-Z - Dott. Ivano Leone). La verifica delle abilità acquisite si articolerà in diverse prove: reading comprehension/use of English, writing, listening comprehension e speaking. Il livello di competenza B2+ è valutato in termini di A, B, C e consiste nel raggiungimento delle abilità previste dal QCER per il livello indicato (es. A = solido B2+ in tutte le abilità e in alcune C1; B = solido B2+ in tutte le abilità; C = B2+ con qualche debolezza specifica di lieve entità). Ulteriori informazioni sulle modalità dello svolgimento delle prove verranno fornite sul sito https://elearning.cli.unipi.it, dove gli studenti possono iscriversi alle prove e prendere visione dei risultati. La validità del risultato positivo delle prove è DUE anni accademici (la stessa delle certificazioni internazionali riconosciute).
Possono essere esonerati dal sostenere le prove di lettorato coloro i quali sono in possesso delle seguenti certificazioni (se conseguite da non più di DUE anni):
- Cambridge FCE (Grade A o B) o certificato superiore (CAE, CPE)
- IELTS: punteggio 6.0 (Competent user) o superiore
- TOEFL IBT: punteggio 80 o superiore
o gli studenti che risultino in possesso del livello B2+ dal placement test iniziale. Questi studenti dovranno sostenere solo l’esame con la Prof.ssa Mattiello e la Dott.ssa Simi. L’eventuale certificazione internazionale deve essere presentata in sede della verbalizzazione dell’esame.
Il voto finale del corso potrà essere verbalizzato dalla Prof.ssa Mattiello solo durante i periodi relativi alle sessioni d’esame secondo il calendario accademico.
The final exam for the thematic course in ordinary sessions consists of an online written test followed by a face-to-face oral exam. The content of both will be based on the topics covered in the course. The written exam with various types of closed questions will be administered on Moodle. A passing mark on the written exam is a prerequisite to sit for the oral exam, consisting of a few questions that focus on the theoretical aspects of the course.
For attending students (70% of lessons), there will be an assessment administered during the course that can substitute the written exam in case of a passing mark. Successfully completing both end-of-module (A and B) assessments substitutes the written exam.
Students may sit for the written course exam in the winter session even before passing the practical language tests (lettorato). If students believe that they already possess a B2+ level for speaking skills, they may also sit for the oral course exam in the winter session; otherwise they must wait until the summer session. Even if students have a level of spoken English sufficient for passing the course oral exam, they must still take the practical language tests to verify a B2+ level of competence for the four skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking). If students pass the written exam on Moodle, but then do not pass the oral exam, they must also repeat the written exam. The final result of the course exam is valid for TWO years.
The practical language classes at the B2+ level are taught by language instructors (CEL) and span over the first and the second semesters, aiming to develop language skills for the four language abilities (last names A-K - Dr. Fowler; last names L-Z - Dr. Leone). Assessment is by means of tests articulated in reading comprehension/use of English, writing, listening comprehension, and speaking. The B2+ competence level is assessed in terms of A, B, C (A corresponds to a solid B2+ in all abilities and even C1 in some; B corresponds to a solid B2+ on all abilities; C corresponds to a B2+ with some specific weaknesses of a minor nature). Further information about how the tests will be administered will be available on https://elearning.cli.unipi.it, where students can sign up for the tests and view their results. Test results are valid for TWO years (the same as for recognised international certificates).
Students who have obtained one of the certificates listed below within TWO years prior to the conclusion of the exam, or students who are in possession of the B2+ level from the initial placement test, may be exempted from taking the language tests. These students will only have to take the exam with Prof. Mattiello-Dr. Simi. International certificates must be presented when students register their final course mark.
