Periodizzazione e comprensione storica: la crescita economica e il pieno medioevo
La periodizzazione è una operazione fondamentale nel lavoro dello storico. Nel caso dei secoli centrali del medioevo, la storiografia più recente è tornata a enfatizzare l’importanza del secolo XI come spartiacque decisive tra due epoche. A differenza di quanto avveniva nei dibattiti precedenti, oggi il tema del cambiamento economico tende ad essere collocate in secondo piano. Il corso affronterà questo problema storico esaminando le principali posizioni in campo e le questioni metodologiche che esse sollevano.
Alla fine del corso gli studenti avranno migliorato la loro conoscenza dei principali fenomeni che furono alla base dell’affermarsi di una nuova struttura economica e sociale nell’Europa latina, insieme alla capacità di orientarsi nel dibattito storiografico e nella tipologia delle fonti di maggiore rilievo.
Periodization and historical understanding: economic growth and the high Middle Ages
Periodizing is a fundamental operation in the work of the historian. In the case of the central centuries of the Middle Ages, the most recent historiography has once again emphasized the importance of the 11th century as a decisive watershed between two eras. Unlike what happened in previous debates, today the issue of economic change tends to be placed in the background. The course will address this issue by examining the main positions in the field and the methodological issues they raise. At the end of the course, students will have improved their knowledge of the main phenomena that were at the basis of the emergence of a new economic and social structure in Latin Europe, together with the ability to orient themselves in the historiographical debate and in the typology of the most important sources.

Attraverso la prova orale sulle letture concordate, gli studenti dovranno dimostrare di avere acquisito la capacità di comprendere, interpretare ed esporre criticamente i risultati di una letteratura storiografica complessa, i documenti e i testi presentati e discussi durante il corso e quelli oggetto della eventuale esercitazione seminariale.
Through the oral exam on the agreed readings, students will have to demonstrate: a) that they have acquired a sure knowledge of the history of social structures and of the processes of economic and institutional transformation between the 4th and 9th centuries; b) to have acquired the ability to understand, interpret and critically expose the results of a complex historiographical literature, the documents and texts presented and discussed during the course and those subject of the eventual seminar exercise.
E' presupposta la conoscenza della storia generale dell'età medievale. E' molto utile la conoscenza di e almeno una lingua straniera tra quelle in uso nella discussione scientifica internazionale.

Le lezioni del corso illustreranno il tema attraverso la ricostruzione del dibattito storiografico, la presentazione di alcune fonti e di contributi di ricerca significativi, l'analisi di questioni fondamentali della ricerca corrente. Gli studenti frequentanti saranno invitati a partecipare attivamente alla discussione. In relazione al numero di iscritti e alle condizioni di accesso alle biblioteche, potranno anche intervenire con loro eventuali esercitazioni seminariali sulla bibliografia e i materiali presentati durante le lezioni.
The lessons will illustrate the theme through the reconstruction of the historiographical debate, the presentation of some significant contributions, the analysis of the fundamental issues in current research. Attending students will be invited to actively participate in the discussion. In relation to the number of members and the conditions of access to libraries, students will be able to participate with any seminar exercises on the bibliography and on the materials presented during the course.

Sulla base del numero degli studenti iscritti e interessati, i frequentanti potranno sostenere parte rilevante dell'esame attraverso la preparazione di un seminario, discusso in aula (fisica o virtuale) e accompagnato da una relazione scritta.
Final oral exam on the agreed individual program. Depending on the number of enrolled and interested students, attending students will be able to take a significant part of the exam through the preparation of a seminar, discussed in the classroom (even virtual) and accompanied by a written report.
