The course aims at providing the background knowledge on the composition, structure, and the main chemical and physico-chemical properties as well as the biological role of the three main classes of biopolymers: proteins, nucleic acids, and polysaccharides.
The knowledge of the basics of organic chemistry is strongly advised
The programme, with some unavoidable overlap with the Biochemistry coruse (structure and nimenclature of bio-macromolecules) concerns the three main classes of bio-macromolecules: Proteins, nucleic acids, and polysaccharides.
The chemical and analytical techniques for their separation, purification and structural characterization, as well as the synthetic routes for their non-biochemical synthesis, are presented. The main issues and problems as they have emerged over the past 50 years are discussed, including chromatographic and spectrometric techniques but with only concise mention of the spectroscopic techniques (NMR and circular dichroism) as these are the subject of another course. The self-assembling behaviour of the biopolymers, the biological significance of their capability to build up well defined three-dimensional structures (fibers, associative gels) and supramolecular assemblies, and their potential applications as functional and/or structural materials are also reviewed. Finally, a brief survey on the structure, synthesis, and application properties of bio-related polymers obtained from renewable resources and of biodegradable polymers will be presented, and the key issues of environmental and economic sustainability discussed.

Esame orale.
Oral exam.
At the student's discretion, the oral exam can be replaced by an in-depth studyon a topic agreed
upon with the teacher, which will be presented with the aid of an electronic presentation
(powerpoint). In this case, the teacher will still be able to ask questions related to the program
carried out by connecting to the topics presented by the student.
