Il corso fornisce una conoscenza di base della storia dell'arte, dell'urbanistica, dell'architettura e della cultura materiale sviluppatesi a Roma, in Italia e nelle province dell'impero romano, dalla fondazione di Roma (metà VIII secolo a.C.) alla tarda antichità (V secolo d.C.), con cenni alla storia delle ricerche e agli approcci metodologici e con alcuni approfondimenti su temi di particolare rilevanza.
The course provides a basic understanding of the history of art, urban planning, architecture, and material culture that developed in Rome, Italy, and the provinces of the Roman Empire, from the foundation of Rome (mid-8th century BC) to late antiquity (5th century AD), including references to the history of research and methodological approaches, and with some in-depth exploration of particularly relevant topics.
Le modalità di verifica delle conoscenze richiamano la partecipazione attiva alle lezioni frontali tramite l’interazione diretta tra docente e discenti, così da favorire momenti di commento e/o approfondimento degli argomenti esposti. Per la verifica in tempo reale dell’efficacia dell’apprendimento e per suscitare interesse di approfondimento della materia, il docente propone alle studentesse e agli studenti domande inerenti all’argomento oggetto della lezione secondo la metodologia del Problem Based Learning.
The methods of knowledge assessment involve active participation in the face-to-face lessons through direct interaction between the instructor and the students, thus fostering moments of commentary and/or deeper exploration of the topics presented. For real-time assessment of learning effectiveness and to generate interest in delving further into the subject matter, the instructor presents questions related to the subject of the lesson using the Problem Based Learning methodology.
Al termine del corso lo studente sarà in grado di orientarsi nel quadro storico-geografico relativo alla civiltà e alla cultura figurativa romana tra la fondazione di Roma e l'epoca tardoantica e di comprendere i fenomeni culturali del mondo romano alla luce della documentazione storico-archeologica.
Avrà inoltre acquisito familiarità con il lessico tecnico dell'archeologia, con le fonti e i principali strumenti bibliografici.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to navigate the historical and geographical framework concerning Roman civilization and figurative culture from the foundation of Rome to the late antique period, and to understand the cultural phenomena of the Roman world in light of historical and archaeological evidence.
Additionally, they will have gained familiarity with the technical vocabulary of archaeology, as well as with sources and the main bibliographic tools.

It will be possible to assess the acquisition of the skills during interactive frontal lessons.
Lo studente potrà acquisire e/o sviluppare sensibilità alle problematiche inerenti i Beni archeologici, tali da consentirgli di formarsi opinioni consapevoli in relazione a temi quali il restauro e la conservazione, la valorizzazione, la gestione e la fruizione dei Beni archeologici.
Imparerà inoltre a interagire con il docente e con la classe nella discussione delle opere.
The student will be able to acquire and/or develop sensitivity to issues related to archaeological heritage, enabling them to form informed opinions regarding topics such as restoration and preservation, enhancement, management, and utilization of archaeological assets.
Furthermore, they will learn how to interact with the instructor and the class in discussions about artworks.
L’acquisizione dei comportamenti verrà rilevata durante tutta la durata del corso.
Nello specifico sarà valutata positivamente la partecipazione in aula.
The acquisition of behaviors will be assessed throughout the entire duration of the course. Specifically, active participation in the classroom will be positively evaluated.
La preparazione dell'esame presuppone una buona conoscenza della Storia romana, della Cultura/Letteratura latina, dell'Archeologia e storia dell'arte greca, della Geografia storica del mondo antico. Questi forniranno i principali metodi e strumenti per comprendere i temi dell’insegnamento in oggetto.
The preparation for the exam requires a solid understanding of Roman history, Latin culture/literature, Greek archaeology and art history, and the historical geography of the ancient world. These will provide the primary methods and tools for comprehending the themes of the subject being taught.
Il corso prevede lo svolgimento di 36 lezioni di 90 minuti ciascuna, divise in due moduli. Il modulo A, tenuto dal prof. Fabiani, prevede una sintesi delle principali manifestazioni dell'Archeologia e della Storia dell'arte romana nei secoli, mentre nel corso del modulo B, tenuto dalla prof. Anguissola, saranno approfonditi alcuni temi di particolare importanza. Le lezioni saranno tenute in italiano.
Le immagini proiettate durante le lezioni saranno a disposizione degli studenti, che potranno scaricarle dalla pagina del corso su Moodle (http://polo4.elearning.unipi.it) utilizzando le proprie credenziali di Ateneo. Sul blog di Moodle saranno inoltre pubblicati tutte le informazioni/comunicazioni per gli studenti e i risultati delle prove d'esame.
Le lezioni non saranno registrate, per cui è vivamente consigliata la frequenza.
The course consists of 36 lessons, each lasting 90 minutes, divided into two modules. Module A, taught by Professor Fabiani, provides an overview of the main expressions of Roman archaeology and art history throughout the centuries, while Module B, taught by Professor Anguissola, will delve into specific themes of significant importance. The lessons will be conducted in Italian.
The images presented during the lessons will be available to students, who can download them from the course page on Moodle (http://polo4.elearning.unipi.it) using their university credentials. All information/communications for students and exam results will also be posted on the Moodle blog.
The lessons will not be recorded, so regular attendance is strongly recommended.
Modulo A - Prof. Fabiani (corrisponde al corso di Istituzioni di Archeologia e storia dell'rte romana) - Il corso presenterà una serie di monumenti e testimonianze archeologiche a partire dalla fondazione di Roma (metà dell'VIII secolo a.C.), fino alla Tarda Antichità (V secolo d.C.), inquadrandole nel loro contesto storico e topografico e spiegandone le problematiche relative alla tipologia, all'iconografia e alla funzione.
Modulo B - Prof. Anguissola. Le lezioni approfondiranno alcuni temi centrali per lo studio dell'Archeologia e storia dell'arte romana: le fonti letterarie ed epigrafiche per l'arte romana; l'economia dell'arte romana; l'architettura domestica (due sedute); la villa romana; l'architettura funeraria; la pittura (due sedute); il mosaico; il ritratto (con una lezione fuori sede presso la Gipsoteca di Arte Antica); la scultura ideale; i sarcofagi (con una lezione fuori sede presso il Camposanto Monumentale); la numismatica; la glittica; la ceramica (con una lezione fuori sede presso la Gipsoteca di Arte Antica).
Module A - Prof. Fabiani (corresponding to the course on Institutions of Roman Archaeology and Art History) - The course will present a series of monuments and archaeological evidence starting from the foundation of Rome (mid-8th century BC) up to Late Antiquity (5th century AD), placing them within their historical and topographical context, and explaining the issues related to their typology, iconography, and function.
Module B - Prof. Anguissola - The lessons will delve into some central themes for the study of Roman Archaeology and Art History: literary and epigraphic sources for Roman art; the economy of Roman art; domestic architecture (two sessions); the Roman villa; funerary architecture; painting (two sessions); mosaics; portraiture (with an off-site lesson at the Gipsoteca di Arte Antica); ideal sculpture; sarcophagi (with an off-site lesson at the Camposanto Monumentale); numismatics; glyptic art; ceramics (with an off-site lesson at the Gipsoteca di Arte Antica).Archeologia e storia dell'arte romana (Modulo A+Modulo B)
È richiesta la conoscenza di un manuale di Archeologia e storia dell'arte romana. Manuali consigliati:

La preparazione deve essere integrata con lo studio dei seguenti testi:

To take the exam, students are required to study a manual on Roman archaeology and supplementary readings dedicated to the definition and semantics of Roman art, urban planning, and Roman architecture. Students who wish to prepare for the exam using texts in English can contact the instructor for a personalized bibliography.

Si raccomanda a quanti intendano sostenere l'esame come studenti frequentanti la presenza regolare in classe: l'esame potrà includere temi discussi in classe e non trattati nei manuali.
Gli studenti non frequentanti sono tenuti a portare lo stesso programma dei frequentanti, con l'aggiunta di testi da concordare con il docente.

Students are strongly encouraged to attend all classes: the exam for both modules includes topics that are not dealt with in the bibliography.
Non-attending students must prepare the exam on the same texts as attending students, with the addition of supplementary readings to be agreed with the teachers.

L'esame finale consiste in una prova scritta (riconoscimento e commento di immagini, domande a risposta aperta) e in un colloquio orale sui temi trattati nei testi d’esame.
ESAME DA 6 CFU: 1 domanda relativa a coordinate storico-geografiche e lessico tecnico, 2 domande a risposta aperta relative a riconoscimenti di opere o monumenti.
ESAME DA 12 CFU: 1 domanda relativa a coordinate storico-geografiche e lessico tecnico, 2 domande a risposta aperta relative a riconoscimenti di opere o monumenti, 1 domanda a risposta aperta relativa a processi culturali e produttivi o ad ampie categorie di materiali.
La prova è superata se il candidato dimostra di conoscere i testi in programma, se è in grado di usare un linguaggio specifico corretto, se è in grado di collegare temi e problemi ricorrenti nei testi proposti dal programma, seè in grado di utilizzare i concetti e le argomentazioni caratterizzanti dei testi proposti.
Chi non supera la prova scritta, è tenuto a ripeterla.
Per chi supera la prova scritta con una votazione compresa fra 18/30 e 26/30 non c'è prova orale, ma solo la registrazione del voto ottenuto nello scritto (previa discussione del compito), per effettuare la quale occorre presentarsi il giorno della prova orale; se lo studente ritiene di non accettare il voto, deve ripetere la prova scritta. Chi supera la prova scritta con una votazione di 27/30 o più, deve sostenere la prova orale; il voto finale terrà conto del risultato della prova scritta e di quella orale.
Non è obbligatorio sostenere la prova orale nello stesso appello della prova scritta: la prova scritta superata ha valore di 12 mesi.
The final examination consists of a written test (image recognition and commentary, open-ended questions) and an oral interview on the topics covered in the examination texts.
EXAM FOR 6 CFU (credit units): 1 question related to historical-geographical coordinates and technical vocabulary, 2 open-ended questions regarding recognition of artworks or monuments.
EXAM FOR 12 CFU (credit units): 1 question related to historical-geographical coordinates and technical vocabulary, 2 open-ended questions regarding recognition of artworks or monuments, 1 open-ended question related to cultural and productive processes or broad categories of materials.
The test is passed if the candidate demonstrates knowledge of the texts in the syllabus, is able to use correct specific language, is able to connect recurring themes and problems in the texts proposed in the syllabus, and is able to use the concepts and arguments characteristic of the proposed texts.
Those who fail the written test are required to retake it.
For those who pass the written test with a grade between 18/30 and 26/30, there is no colloquium. These students must only request that the result be recorded on the day of the colloquium. Students who do not intend to accept and register the result of the written test, must repeat the written test.
Those who pass the written test with a grade of 27/30 or above, must take the colloquium; the final grade will take into account the result of both the written test and the colloquium.
It is not compulsory to take the colloquium in the same session as the written test: the results of a passed written test are valid for 12 months.
Archeologia e storia dell'arte romana e Istituzioni di archeologia e storia dell'arte romana sono due corsi distinti.
- Archeologia e storia dell’arte romana, codice 266LL, 12 CFU, 72 ore di lezione: il corso è diviso in due moduli, il modulo A con le linee generali dello sviluppo dell’archeologia e della storia dell’arte romana (tenuto dal prof. Fabiani) e il modulo B (tenuto dalla prof. Anguissola, a seguire) con alcuni approfondimenti tematici. Poiché l’esame è da 12 CFU, i moduli vanno seguiti entrambi e l’esame preparato sulla bibliografia fornita per entrambi i moduli.
- Istituzioni di Archeologia e storia dell’arte romana, codice 326LL, 6 CFU, 36 ore di lezione: il corso fornisce le linee generali dello sviluppo dell’archeologia e della storia dell’arte romana ed è riservato agli studenti che NON sono iscritti al curriculum archeologico del Corso di Studi in Scienze dei Beni culturali (= storici dell’arte, storici tout court, filologi, letterati). Il corso è ‘mutuato’ cioè condivide le 36 ore del modulo A di Archeologia e storia dell’arte romana.
Ricapitolando: il modulo A di Archeologia e storia dell’arte romana (prof. Fabiani) è comune ad entrambi i corsi, il modulo B (prof. Anguissola) è destinato agli studenti che intendono sostenere l’esame da 12 CFU.

Archaeology and History of Roman Art and Institutions of Archaeology and History of Roman Art are two separate courses.
- Archaeology and History of Roman Art, code 266LL, 12 CFUs, 72 lecture hours: the course is divided into two modules, module A with the general outlines of the development of archaeology and history of Roman art (taught by Prof. Fabiani) and module B (taught by Prof. Anguissola, to follow) with some thematic insights. Since the exam is 12 CFU, both modules should be taken and the exam prepared on the bibliography provided for both modules.
- Institutions of Roman Archaeology and Art History, code 326LL, 6 CFU, 36 lecture hours: the course provides the general outlines of the development of Roman archaeology and art history and is reserved for students who are NOT enrolled in the archaeology curriculum of the Cultural Heritage Studies course (= art historians, historians tout court, philologists, literati). The course is 'borrowed' i.e., it shares the 36 hours of Module A in Archaeology and History of Roman Art.
To recap: module A of Archaeology and History of Roman Art (Prof. Fabiani) is common to both courses, module B (prof. Anguissola) is for students who intend to take the 12 CFU exam.
