Al termine del corso lo studente acquisisce approfondite conoscenze di lingua e storia della letteratura latina e potrà familiarizzare con strumenti e metodologie critiche per l’esegesi dei testi letterari latini, con particolare attenzione agli aspetti linguistici, stilistici, filologici, storico letterari, con riferimenti anche alla loro ricezione nella tradizione letteraria successiva.
The student who successfully completes the course will deepen the knowledge of the Latin language and literature and of the tools and methodologies for an exegesis of Latin literary texts, with a particular attention to the linguistic, stylistic, philological and literary aspects, with references to their reception in the later literary tradition.
L'esame si svolge in forma orale. Lo studente dovrà dimostrare la sua conoscenza dei testi trattati durante il corso e di quelli che costituiscono il programma d’esame. In conformità con gli obiettivi del progetto di eccellenza CECIL, sono previste almeno due prove scritte di traduzione di un passo di poesia latina, una nel primo e una nel secondo semestre. La valutazione di queste prove (che terrà conto del grado di accuratezza e precisione delle soluzioni proposte e della competenza linguistica del latino e dell'italiano) non fa media con i colloqui orali, ma servirà soprattutto a riflettere sulla dinamica della traduzione scritta e sui registri dell’italiano scritto e letterario.
During the oral exam the student will be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and to discuss the texts of the syllabus thoughtfully and with propriety of language. In accordance with the objectives of the CECIL excellence project, at least two written translation tests of a passage of Latin poetry are foreseen, one in the first and one in the second semester.
Durante l'esame sarà accertata la capacità dello studente di: leggere e tradurre i testi latini in programma; rispondere a quesiti riguardanti la struttura grammaticale (morfologia e sintassi) dei testi stessi; leggere metricamente i testi in poesia; rispondere a domande riguardanti i principali autori e opere della letteratura latina; discutere le tematiche affrontate nel corso monografico.
Translate Latin texts; answer to questions about Latin grammar (morphology and syntax) and Latin literature; read poetic latin texts which are part of the syllabus.
L'esame orale prevede la lettura (metrica per i testi in poesia), la traduzione e l'analisi morfosintattica dei testi in programma, nonchè alcune domande di storia della letteratura. La valutazione terrà conto anche di eventuali contributi e interventi dello studente durante le lezioni, nonché dell’esito delle prove scritte in itinere.
The oral exam will entail reading out (metrically) select passages from the course syllabus. The student under examination will then be asked to translate a passage and the teacher will also make sure the student understand the grammar of the text. The teacher will ask the student to contextualize the exam passage. Some questions will relate to the teacher's course of lectures. Skills will be assessed both on the basis of any contributions and interventions of the student during the lessons and of the oral examination. The assessment will consider also the outcome of the written translation tests.
Il corso si propone di sollecitare la partecipazione attiva degli studenti e di incoraggiare loro personali proposte interpretative dei testi letti a lezione. La frequenza sarà affiancata dallo studio personale dei testi in programma.
The course aims to solicit the active participation of students and to encourage their personal interpretative proposals of the texts read during the lessons.
Esame orale, che può essere suddiviso in colloqui parziali. I comportamenti saranno valutati sia in base a eventuali contributi e interventi degli studenti durante le lezioni, sia nell’ambito del colloquio orale.
Oral exam. The students can divide the exam into two or three parts. The behaviors will be evaluated both on the basis of any contributions and interventions of the student during the lessons, and in the context of the oral exam.
Il corso presuppone una buona conoscenza della lingua latina, dei fondamenti di prosodia e metrica e la capacità di leggere l’esametro latino. Gli studenti potranno sostenere l’esame solo dopo aver completato l’esame di Lingua e letteratura latina I (A o B). Gli studenti di Lettere moderne dovranno studiare i capitoli I-VII di A. Traina, G. Bernardi Perini, Propedeutica al latino universitario, VI. ed. riveduta e aggiornata da C. Marangoni, Bologna 1998.
A high-shool level knowledge of the Latin language, the fundamentals of prosody and metrics and the ability to read the hexameter are required. Students will be able to take the exam only after completing the exam of Latin Language and Literature I (A or B).
Students of the Modern Literature Curriculum will also have to study chapters I-VII of A. Traina, G. Bernardi Perini, Propedeutica al latino universitario, VI. ed. riveduta e aggiornata da C. Marangoni, Bologna 1998.
Il corso prevede lezioni frontali che tuttavia presuppongono e sollecitano la partecipazione attiva degli studenti.
The course includes face to face lectures which, however, solicit the active participation of students.
1) Corso monografico. Alcune lezioni introduttive saranno dedicate agli elementi caratterizzanti della lingua poetica latina, in particolare sotto il profilo sintattico e lessicale. Il corso sarà incentrato sul finale del IV libro del De rerum natura di Lucrezio, inteso come snodo per la rappresentazione del tema amoroso nella poesia latina. Dopo alcune lezioni introduttive sulla figura del poeta, sul mistero della sua biografia, sulla riscoperta del testo in epoca umanistica e sulla sua ricezione moderna, durante le lezioni sarà letto e commentato il finale del IV libro, con riferimenti all’epigramma d’amore ellenistico e alla poesia preneoterica e neoterica latina, bersaglio della polemica lucreziana contro la passione amorosa.
2) Lettura (per i testi in poesia è richiesta la lettura metrica), traduzione e analisi morfo-sintattica e stilistica dei seguenti testi latini:
- Lucrezio, De rerum natura, libro III: si consiglia l’edizione Garzanti a cura di F. Giancotti o l’edizione BUR con traduzione di L. Canali e note di I. Dionigi o l’edizione UTET a cura di A. Fellin (si può anche utilizzare, ma non è materia di interrogazione all’esame, il commento di E.J. Kenney, Lucretius, De rerum natura Book III, Cambridge 20142);
- Virgilio, Bucoliche, Introduzione e commento di A. Cucchiarelli, trad. di A. Traina, Roma 2012 (o altra edizione concordata con la docente)
- Seneca, La brevità della vita, a cura di A. Traina, 6a edizione riveduta, Torino 1993;
- Ovidio, Remedia amoris, Introduzione, testo e commento a cura di P. Pinotti, Bologna 1988 (in alternativa si possono utilizzare queste due edizioni: Ovidio, Rimedi contro l’amore, a cura di V. Rimell, trad. di G. Paduano, Fondazione Lorenzo Valla 2022, oppure Ovidio, Rimedi contro l’amore, a cura di C. Lazzarini, Venezia 2008);

3) (per gli studenti di lettere classiche): storia della letteratura latina dalla prima età imperiale fino alla tarda antichità e agli autori cristiani, da preparare su un buon manuale in uso nei licei (si consiglia G.B. Conte, Letteratura latina, Firenze, Le Monnier, 1995 e edizioni successive).
4) (per gli studenti di lettere moderne): studio dei capitoli da I a VII di A. Traina - G. Bernardi Perini, Propedeutica al latino universitario, VI ed. riveduta e aggiornata da C. Marangoni, Bologna 1998.
1) Monographic course. Some introductory lessons will be dedicated to the characterizing elements of the Latin poetic language. The course will focus on the last part of the IV book of Lucretius' De rerum natura, intended as a turning point for the representation of love in Latin poetry. After some introductory lessons on the figure of the poet, on the mystery of his biography, on the rediscovery of the text in the humanistic era and on its modern reception, during the lessons the ‘finale’ of the fourth book will be read and commented, with references to the Hellenistic love epigram and to preneoteric and neoteric Latin poetry, the target of Lucretius’ polemic against love and passion.
2) Reading (for texts in poetry the metrical reading is required), translation, morpho-syntactic and stylistic analysis of the Latin texts listed below:
- Lucrezio, De rerum natura, libro III (we reccomend Garzanti edition ed. by F. Giancotti or BUR edition, or UTET edition ed. by A. Fellin (students can also use the commentary by E. J. Kenney, Lucretius, De rerum natura Book III, Cambridge 20142);

Per seguire le lezioni gli studenti potranno comunque procurarsi un’edizione economica del De rerum natura con traduzione italiana: tra quelle sopra indicate si consigliano l'edizione BUR a cura di Conte-Canali-Dionigi, l'edizione Garzanti a cura di Giancotti o l'edizione UTET a cura di Fellin.

The Latin text of the passages read during the lessons will be made available by the teacher. To follow the lessons, students can use an edition of De rerum natura with an Italian translation: among those indicated above we recommend the BUR edition edited by Conte-Canali-Dionigi, the Garzanti edition edited by Giancotti or the UTET edition edited by Fellin.
Gli studenti non frequentanti sostituiranno il corso monografico con la lettura e traduzione di Cicerone, La divinazione, a cura di S. Timpanaro, Milano 1998 (2. ed. o ristampe successive).
Non-attending students will replace the lecture course with the reading of Cicerone, La divinazione, a c. di S. Timpanaro, 2. ed., Garzanti, Milano 1998.
L'esame si svolge in forma orale. Dal momento che il corso è annuale e si svolgerà sia nel primo sia nel secondo semestre, l'esame potrà essere concluso solo alla fine delle lezioni, cioè a partire dal primo appello estivo del 2024. Durante l'anno sarà comunque possibile sostenere colloqui parziali che verteranno sui testi in programma ad esclusione del corso monografico, che costituisce l'ultima parte dell'esame. Di norma l'esame potrà essere diviso in tre-quattro parti. La storia della letteratura deve sempre essere abbinata ad almeno un testo latino. Per chi non intenda dividere il programma, è possibile anche sostenere l'esame in un'unica seduta.
The exam takes place in oral form. Since the course is annual and will take place both in the first and in the second semester, the exam can be concluded only at the end of the lessons, (starting from the first summer session of 2024). During the year it will be possible to make partial exams, which will focus on the texts and the history of literature with the exception of the monographic course, which constitutes the last part of the exam. The exam cannot be divided into more than three parts. The history of literature must always be combined with at least one Latin text.
