The module presents the fundamental concepts related to traffic theory and engineering in telecommunications networks. Discrete-state Markov processes (chains) are introduced both in discrete and continuous time. The elementary and intermediate theories of queues, useful for the treatability of the basic models of wait and loss systems, are introduced. They will be used used for the stochastic analysis of packet and circuit switched networks. The discussion of the fundamental performance indexes is presented using, where needed, the analysis in a transformed domain (Laplace, Zeta). Furthermore the fundamental theorems for the analysis of open and closed Markovian networks of queues and BCMP type networks are presented. The course presents (only for the students in Telecommunications Engineering) the fundamental numerical methods for the performance analysis of queueing systems with Markovian tractability.
The assessment of the acquired knowledges take place through intermediate written tests (midterms -that give the student the possibilty to avoid the final written exam) and through an oral final exam.
The ambition of the course is to allow students to autonomously construct a mathematical modeling abstraction of discrete-state real systems that is tractable through Markovian approaches. The student also acquires the critical skills necessary to verify the validity of the hypotheses necessary for the adoption of Markovian models.
Skills assessment is obtained through intermediate written tests and the final oral exam.
The course aims to modify the "passive" behavior in which the student adopts some mathematical models without first verifying the validity of the hypotheses necessary for the use of certain abstractions and being able to build their own mathematical models.
The assessment of the critical behavior in the adoption of the models is verified during the oral test but also during the course, both in theoretical lessons and exercises. This is also reiforced by the developments of MATLAB programming (only for the students of Telecommunications Engineering).
Prerequisites are the theory of probabilities, random processes and the use of Z and Laplace transforms.
It is desiderabile a prior knowledge on linear time invariant systems.
The deepening of the discipline also develops through basic knowledge of operational research and optimization.
From a methodological point of view, the course aims to stimulate an Active Learning approach in which from the fundamental knowledge of some mathematical tools the student can jurge, where some mathematical tools can be applied for the performance of stochastical systems. This is aimed to the strainghtening of rational/“reasoned” synthesis skills to be applied to the design of complex systems.
