Seguendo il corso, gli studenti potranno acquisire una generale conoscenza del lungo percorso storico che ha preceduto la nascita delle neuroscienze nella seconda metà del Novecento.
Attending the course, students will acquire the knowledge of the long historical path preceding the birth of neuroscience in the second half of the 20th century.

Gli studenti potranno anche essere in grado di affrontare e discutere con una consapevolezza di tipo storico-critico alcune delle varie problematiche legate alla centralità delle neuroscienze nel presente.
Students will also be able to face and discuss some of the various issues related to the centrality of neuroscience in the present time with a historical-critical awareness.

Mente e cervello. Dall’antichità al Novecento
Negli ultimi decenni l’investimento di risorse che alimentano l'insieme delle neuroscienze è aumentato ovunque in modo esponenziale. D'altro canto, fortemente stimolato dai media, è cresciuto l’interesse di un pubblico sempre più ampio per le ricerche di quelle discipline che promettono meraviglie. A tal punto che sarebbe in atto da qualche tempo una sorta di neuro-turn. Ne fa anche parte il dilagare di progetti finalizzati a forme varie di intelligenza artificiale, i cui algoritmi domineranno una parte sempre maggiore di attività umane.
In realtà, la cultura occidentale non ha mai cessato d’interrogarsi sul rapporto fra corpo e mente, nonché d’indagare in modi diversi su struttura e funzioni del sistema nervoso. Al fine di affrontare criticamente quel complesso di questioni, il corso/seminario ripercorrerà in chiave storica i vari stadi di un lungo, mutevole e differenziato discorso.
Mind and Brain. From Antiquity to the 20thcentury
In the last decades the investment of resources that feed the composite set of neuroscience has grown exponentially everywhere. On the other hand, strongly stimulated by the media, the interest of an ever wider audience has increased for disciplines which promise wonders, so much so that in recent years a sort of neuro-turn would be in progress. It also includes the spread of projects aimed at various forms of artificial intelligence, whose algorithms will dominate an increasing part of human activities.
In reality, Western culture has never ceased to question the relationship between body and mind, and to investigate in different ways the structure and functions of the nervous system. In order to critically address that complex of issues, the course/seminar will retrace in historical terms the various stages of a long, changing and differentiated discourse.
