L’obiettivo principale del corso - tenuto interamente in lingua inglese - consiste nel fornire agli/lle studenti/esse gli strumenti per interpretare e comprendere il conflitto in atto in Israele/Palestina, inserito nei contesti regionale e internazionale, a partire dagli anni ’80 del XIX secolo fino al primo decennio del XX secolo.
The purpose of this course, which is taught entirely in English, is to allow students to develop a critical approach to the complex history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, to understand its roots, to have a first basic comprehension of the political, diplomatic, economic aspects, as much as of the cultural and psychological implications, and to be familiar with the different narratives of the conflict, both the pro-Palestinian and the pro-Israeli.
Le conoscenze maturate dagli/lle studenti/esse durante il corso verranno verificate ogni lezione, in occasione della discussione sulle letture assegnate.
Students who attend course's classes (class attendance is compulsary) and write the final paper must demonstrate the ability to thoroughly deal with a specific topic and to critically address the identified research question. Review of literature, and personal interpretation are among the main criteria for the teacher’s judgement. During the written final exam, students must be able to demonstrate their knowledge and be able to discuss the course contents thoughtfully and with propriety of expression.
Alla fine del corso, gli/le studenti/esse avranno maturato la capacità di analizzare criticamente lo sviluppo del conflitto arabo-israeliano, dagli anni ’80 del XIX secolo fino al primo decennio del XX secolo.
By the end of the course, students will have acquired the ability to critically analyze the main developments of the Arab-Israeli conflict, from the 1880s to the first decade of the 21st centiury.
Le capacità maturate dagli/lle studenti/esse durante il corso verranno verificate ogni lezione, in occasione della discussione sulle letture assegnate.
Skills acquired by the students during the course will be checked every class, during the discussion on the assigned readings and a brief summary of what was addressed during the previous class.

Il corso, di 36 ore divise in 18 lezioni, dura nove settimane. Le lezioni sono frontali, ma è richiesta agli/lle studenti/esse una partecipazione attiva alla discussione che verterà su una serie di letture. Tali letture - caricate sulla piattaforma moodle e già distribuite tra le varie lezioni - fanno parte integrante del programma d’esame.
The 36-hour course, divided into 18 lessons, lasts nine weeks.
Students are required to actively participate in the discussion on a series of readings uploaded on the moodle platform and already distributed among the various classes, as written on the syllabus.

Per gli/le studenti/esse non frequentanti, l'esame consisterà in una prova orale (in italiano) sugli argomenti trattati dai seguenti due volumi:
1) Ian Black, Nemici e vicini. Arabi ed ebrei in Palestina e Israele, 1917-2017, Torino, Einaudi, 2018
2) Arturo Marzano, Storia dei sionismi. Lo stato egli ebrei da Herzl a oggi, Roma, Carocci, 2017
In alternativa, è possible scegliere come programma i seguenti tre volumi:

2) Fania Oz-Salzberger, Yedidia Z. Stern, STud sul pensiero politico israeliano, Zikkaron, 2018

Erasmus and/or visiting non-attending students should contact prof. Marzano at this email address (arturo.marzano@unipi.it) by the end of September. Those who won't do that, will not be allowed to take the exam.
Per gli/lei studenti/esse frequentanti, il voto finale sarà determinato sulla base di:
1) La frequenza attiva alle lezioni, che conterà per il 20% del voto.
2) Una prova scritta, che verterà su tutti gli argomenti trattati a lezione e varrà per il 40% del voto.
3) Un paper di una lunghezza compresa tra le 4,000 e le 5,000 parole (note incluse, bibliografia esclusa), su un argomento da concordare preventivamente con il docente. Tale paper conterà per il 40% del voto.
The final mark will be based on:
1) Class attendance. Students have to attend at least 85% of classes. They are required to actively contribute to the discussion; 20% of the final grade will be based on that.
2) A final written exam, based on the assigned readings and on what has been discussed in classes during the course. The exam will represent 40% of the final grade.
3) A final paper of 4,000 - 5,000 words (footnotes included, bibliography excluded), on a topic that has to be agreed with the professor. It represents 40% of the final grade.
