Lo studente acquisirà conoscenze storiche e metodologiche sull'arte italiana del Cinquecento, e i suoi rapporti con altri paesi europei.
The student will learn about historical and methodological issues concerning Italian art in the Sixteenth century, and its relationship with other European countries.
La verifica delle conoscenze avverrà attraverso un esame scritto finale.
The course will be assessed in the final exam (see below for its format).
Alla fine del corso lo studente sarà in grado di
- riconoscere le opere degli artisti italiani e stranieri presi in considerazione durante il corso;
- parlare delle opere in questione utilizzando il vocabolario adeguato;
- collocare artisti e committenti nel contesto storico e culturale del periodo.
By the end of the course the student will be capable of:
- identifying the works by Italian and foreign artists studied in the course;
- discuss these works of art using the appropriate critical vocabulary;
- place artists and patrons in their historical and cultural context.
Nell'esame finale lo studente avrà la possibilità di dimostrare
- la capacità di parlare di opere viste dal vivo utilizzando il linguaggio e le categorie critiche studiate nel corso ed esemplificate da una varietà di testi antichi e moderni in cui sono offerti modelli di ekphrasis delle opere in questione o di opere analoghe;
- la capacità di osservare un'opera d'arte e connetterla all'ambiente sociale e culturale che l'ha prodotta.
The final exam will enable students to show their skills at
- discussing works seen in the flesh using the vocabulary and critical categories studied in the course and exemplified by models of ekphrasis contained in a variety of early modern and contemporary texts addressing these very same works of art or similar ones;
- observing a work of art and relating it to its social and cultural environment.
Lo studente imparerà a compiere ricerche bibliografiche, e analizzare opere d'arte dal vivo e utilizzando le risorse web disponibili.
Students will learn to search and assemble bibliographies, as well as to analyze works of art seen in the flesh and resorting to all the available tools on the web.
L'esame finale valuterà la capacità di comprensione della bibliografia in rapporto all'osservazione diretta delle opere.
The final exam will assess the degree of understanding of the set reading material in relation to the observation of the art works.

Il corso consiste in lezioni frontali in classe e al museo di San Matteo. Ci saranno due visite a Roma e Firenze.
I materiali delle lezioni frontali (power-points), così come la bibliografia dettagliata sono forniti sulla piattaforma di e-learning Moodle.
The course consists of a mix of frontal lectures and visits to the Museo di San Matteo. There will also be two trips to Rome and Florence.
All the teaching materials used in frontal lectures (i.e. power-points) and detailed reading lists will be uploaded on the university e-learning platform Moodle which will also contain the materials students will need to peruse in preparation to the discussions in which they will be directly involved.
Il Rinascimento Italiano: Il Cinquecento. Il corso affronta lo sviluppo dell'arte italiana durante il Cinquecento e il passaggio di testimone tra Firenze e Roma. Sarà analizzata la diaspora degli artisti verso altri centri italiani ed europei dopo il 1527, e lo sviluppo di un nuovo manierismo internazionale che vede nel cantiere di Fontainebleau il suo prinicpale centro propulsivo.
The Italian Renaissance: The Sixteenth Century. The course focuses on the development of Italian art during the sixteenth century and on the shift of art production and consumption from Florence to Rome. The diaspora of artists after the Sack f Rome in 1527 will offer the opportunity to consider developments in other Italian centres as well as abroad, leading to the development of an international mannerist style which developed in particular at Fontainebleau.

Attendance is mandatory.
L'esame consta di una prova scritta sui testi in programma; in essa si valuta la capacità 1) di usare appropriatamente il lessico tecnico della storia dell'arte, 2) di saper collocare opere e artisti nel contesto storico e sociale in cui sono stati prodotti, 3) di illustrare le problematiche stilistiche ed iconografiche.
There will be a final written exam dealing with the compulsory reading.
The aim of the written exam is to assess the capacity to
- use appropriately the technical vocabulary of art history;
- locate works of art and their authors within the historical and social context within which they were produced;
- discuss the stylistic and iconographic peculiarities of works of art of a given period.
