Scopo principale del Corso Docente è quello di fornire le conoscenze relative alle caratteristiche della lingua inglese a livello sintagmatico, frasale, e testuale, con riferimento ai vari ambiti discorsivi e situazioni comunicative.
Al Corso Docente sono affiancate esercitazioni scritte e orali nell’ambito del Lettorato (lingua strumentale) che mirano a sviluppare le conoscenze e abilità relative alla comunicazione in lingua inglese a livello B2 del Quadro Comune Europeo
The second year of English language is articulated into two components: the Corso Docente (theoretical course) and the Lettorato (practical language usage).
The Corso Docente aims to provide knowledge of the characteristics of the English language on the syntactic, structural, and textual levels, with particular reference to various discourse domains and communicative situations.
The Corso Docente is supplemented with the Lettorato (practical language classes) that aims to develop English language communication skills at the B2 level of the European Framework.

Corso docente: essere capaci di 1) distinguere e analizzare le caratteristiche sintagmatiche e frasali della lingua inglese, e 2) riconoscere e analizzare vari tipi di testi a livello strutturale, discorsivo e interpersonale, anche nell'ambito di varie situazioni communicative.
Lettorato (lingua strumentale): essere in grado di comprendere e produrre comunicazioni scritte e orali in lingua inglese a livello B2 dell Quadro Comune Europeo.
Corso docente: be able to 1) distinguish and analyze the syntactic and structural featues of the English language and 2) analyze various types of texts at the structural, discursive and interpersonal levels in various communicative situations.
Lettorato (practical language skills): be able to understand and produce both written and oral communication in English at the B2 level of the European Framework.
Superamento dell'esame scritto del Corso Docente composto da quesiti a scelta multipla, risposta aperta e una breve analisi testuale.
Superamento delle prove relative al Lettorato (calibrate a livello B2) o possesso di una certificazione a livello B2 tra tra quelle indicate sul sito CLI (http://www.cli.unipi.it/area-internazionale/certificazioni-internazionali-1/certificazioni-internazional) conseguita da non più di due anni.
Passing grade on the written examination of the Corso Docente which comprises multiple choice questions, open questions and a brief textual analysis.
Passing scores on all the tests of the Lettorato (calibrated at the B2 level) or possession of a recognized certificate of English language competence at the B2 level among those indicated on the CLI (Centro Linguistico Ateneo - University Language Center) website (http://www.cli.unipi.it/corsi/certificazioni-internazionali-1/certificazioni-internazionali). The certificate must not be older than two years.
Lingua inglese 1.
Per poter sostenere l'esame del Corso Docente di Lingua inglese 2 (Mod A e Mod B), gli studenti devono necessariamente avere sul libretto la verbalizzazione dell’esame di Lingua inglese 1. Gli studenti che intendano sostenere l’esame di Lingua inglese 3 devono necessariamente avere sul libretto la verbalizzazione dell’esame di Lingua inglese 2. Si invitano gli studenti a sostenere le varie parti degli esami di Lingua in tempi consoni al regolare espletamento dei compiti di verifica e verbalizzazione da parte dei docenti.
First-year English language course.
In order to sit for the examination of the Corso Docente (Modules A and Mod B) of the Second-year English course, students must have successfully completed the First-year English course and the final result must appear on their grade transcript. Similarly, students who intend to sit for the Third-year English course examination must have the final result of the Second-year English course recorded on their transcripts. Students are encouraged to record results of passed exams with the professor in a timely way.
Il Corso di Lingua Inglese 2 prevede un Corso Docente che si svolge nel primo semestre. Il Corso è articolato in due parti: Modulo A (From phrases to texts to discourse) svolto dalla Prof.ssa Crawford (6 cfu) e Modulo B (English lexical phraseology) svolto da Prof. Coffey (3 cfu).
Gli argomenti del Modulo A includeranno la sintassi della lingua inglese, con particolare riferimento agli aspetti strutturali e funzionali a livello sintagmatico e frasale. Inoltre, si approfondiranno le caratteristiche del testo, soffermandosi su vari temi quali la coesione e la coerenza, le tipologie testuali, gli elementi interpersonali del testo, nonché i linguaggi specialistici utilizzati in vari ambiti discorsivi, ad esempio il giornalismo, la pubblicità, la comunicazione aziendale ed i social media.
Il Modulo B si svolgerà nel II sottosemestre del primo semestre e consisterà in un’introduzione alla fraseologia della lingua inglese, considerata soprattutto dal punto di vista lessicale. Tratterà una serie di fenomeni, fra cui: ‘lexical phrases’, ‘sentence-level units’, ‘lexical collocation’, e ‘grammatical collocation’. Oltre alla spiegazione generale dei vari fenomeni, si terrà conto anche delle prospettive interlinguistica, lessicografica, e testuale.
Il Lettorato è svolto da Collaboratori ed Esperti Linguistici (CEL) per due semestri e mira a potenziare tutte e quattro le abilità linguistiche: leggere, scrivere, ascoltare, parlare.
The Corso Docente takes place during the first semester and is articulated into two parts: Module A (From phrases to texts to discourse - Prof.ssa Crawford - 6 cfu) and Module B (English lexical phraseology - Prof. Coffey - 3 cfu).
Module A introduces English syntax, with particular attention to the structural and functional aspects of phrases and sentences. It also includes features of English texts, focusing on topics such as cohesion and coherence, text types, interpersonal elements of texts, as well as characteristics of texts used in special communicative situations such as journalism, advertising, business communication and social media.
Modulo B will be taught in the second part of the first semester. The central theme of the Module is the phraseology of English, considered especially from a lexical perspective.Various phenomena will be described, among which lexical phrases, sentence-level items, lexical collocation, and grammatical collocation. Description will include interlingual, lexicographical, and textual perspectives.
Il Lettorato is held by language instructors and spans over the first and the second semesters, aiming to develop language skill for the four language abilities: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

La valutazione di Lingua Inglese 2 si compone in due parti:
(1) L'esame del Corso Docente
E' composto da una prova scritta in inglese che verterà sugli argomenti sia del Modulo A (Prof. Crawford) che del Modulo B (Prof. Coffey). La prova scritta consisterà in domande a scelta multipla e riposta aperta, nonché esercizi di analisi testuale. Non è consentito l'uso del dizionario. Il risultato ha una validità di TRE anni. Gli studenti potranno sostenere l'esame relativo al Corso Docente anche prima di aver superato le prove relative alle esercitazioni.
(2) La verifica delle conoscenze acquisite nel Lettorato
La verifica si articolerà, sul modello degli esami di Cambridge, in 1) una prova scritta che comprenderà reading comprehension/use of English e writing, 2) una prova di listening comprehension, e 3) una prova di speaking. L'esame ha una votazione complessiva di 100, poiché ogni abilità vale 25 punti. Ciascuna abilità dovrà essere superata con la votazione di 15 su 25.
Lo scritto (che comprende le abilità di reading/use of English e writing), l'ascolto, e l'orale possono essere sostenute separatamente. Perciò, se ad esempio una persona ha superato lo scritto, ma non la prova di ascolto, può ridare la prova di ascolto entro due anni conservando il punteggio dello scritto. Tuttavia, per accedere all'orale è necessario superare sia la prova scritta che la prova di ascolto. Dopo due anni qualsiasi risultato parziale decade e la prova deve essere sostenuta nuovamente. La validità del risultato positivo è DUE anni accademici (la stessa delle certificazioni internazionali riconosciute - vedi sotto). Gli studenti possono iscriversi alle prove del lettorato e prendere visione dei risultato al sito https://elearning.cli.unipi.it.
Lettorato inglese 2 (avanzato)
Il lettorato 2 avanzato è indirizzato solo agli studenti che hanno superato il Lettorato inglese 1 (avanzato) svolto dalla dott.ssa Pieri (a.a. 2015-2016) con un punteggio di almeno 85/100, oppure quelli che sono già in possesso di un FCE o CAE. Nel primo semestre, gli studenti visioneranno in autoapprendimento 10 films in lingua originale (senza sotto titoli). Nel secondo semestre, gli studenti faranno un incontro alla settimana con la dott.ssa Ristevski, svolgendo conversazione ed esercitazioni sui films visionati nel primo semestre. Al termine, ci sarà una verifica scritta (50/100) e orale (50/100). Lo scritto consisterà nella produzione di un testo sul film, e di esercizi sul lessico del film; l'orale in una interazione con lo studente che sarà messo di fronte all'ascolto di un segmento del film per poi discuterne con la dott.ssa Ristevski. Ulteriori dettagli sono disponibili in un file inserito sulla pagina Moodle del corso.
Sono esonerati dal sostenere le verifiche del Lettorato gli studenti che possiedono una certificazione valida tra quelle indicate sul sito CLI (http://www.cli.unipi.it/area-internazionale/certificazioni-internazionali-1/certificazioni-internazionali) tra le quali:
- Cambridge First Certificate English (o superior)
- IELTS Competent User (punteggio 5.5-6.5)
- Toefl: PBT (punteggio 507-559), CBT (punteggio 180-219), iBT (87-109)
Anche nel caso in cui lo studente sia già in possesso di certificazione pertinente, si consiglia di partecipare alle attività del Lettorato al fine di mantenere e consolidare il livello di competenza acquisito.
Il voto riportato nel Corso Docente e l'esito delle prove di lettorato concorrono al voto finale di Lingua inglese 2. Il voto finale è unico e i crediti sono assegnati dalla docente titolare in un'unica soluzione al completamento delle due parti (Corso Docente e Lettorato).
The final grade of Second-year English has two parts:
(1) The examination of the Corso Docente
The assessment consists of an examination written in English and covers topics from both Module A (Prof. Crawford) and Module B (Prof. Coffey). It contains multiple choice questions, open questions and a text analysis task. Students may not use dictionaries. A passing grade is valid for three years. Students can sit for the Corso Docente exam before passing the Lettorato tests.
(2) Tests of language competence (Lettorato)
The tests are articulated according to the Cambridge English language exams: 1) a written test that comprises the skills of reading comprehension/use of English and writing, 2) a test of listening, and 3) an oral test of speaking. The total score is base on 100 points with each skill (reading/use of English, listening, writing and speaking) worth 25 points each, with 15 points being the minimum passing score for each.
The tests - written (reading/use of English and writing), listening, and oral - can be taken separately. For example, if a student passes the written (reading/use of English and writing), but not the listening, s/he can take the only listening again and maintain the passing score on the written test. However, to sit for the oral test, it is first necessary to pass the both written and the listening tests. After two years, any partial results are no longer valid and the tests must be repeated. All results of the Lettorato tests are valid for two years (as for the officially recognized certificates - see below). Students can enroll for the lettorato tests and see their results at: https://elearning.cli.unipi.it.
Advanced Second-year English Lettorato
The advanced lettorato is only for students who have passed the advanced level First year English lettorato in 2015-2016 with a score of at least 85/100, or who already possess a FCE o CAE. In the first semester, students will independently view ten films in original English (without subtitles). In the second semester, students will have one class per week with Dr. Ristevski to discuss and carry out language tasks related to the previously viewed films. At the end of the semester, there will be a written test (50/100) and an oral assessment (50/100). Further details will be available on the course Moodle site.
Students who possess a valid form of certification are not required to pass the Lettorato tests. Certificates that are recognized can be found at http://www.cli.unipi.it/corsi/certificazioni-internazionali-1/certificazioni-internazionali, which include:
- Cambridge First Certificate English (or superior)
- IELTS Competent User (score of 5.5-6.5)
- Toefl: PBT (score of 507-559), CBT (score of 180-219), iBT (score of 87-109)
Students who already possess one of these certificates should still participate in the Lettorato to maintain and consolidate their acquired level of English language competence.
The grade on the written examination of the Corso Docente and the results of the Lettorato tests are both taken into consideration for the final mark of the course. There is only one final course mark and its corresponding credits are assigned by the professor at one sitting only when both parts (Corso Docente and Lettorato) have been completed.

"La valutazione dell'esito dell'esame e, in caso di esito positivo, la relativa votazione, compresa tra diciotto e trenta [...]. L'esame superato non può essere ripetuto."
Propedeuticità Prove di Lettorato
Gli studenti dei Corsi di Lingua Inglese che non si possono sostenere le prove di Lettorato 2 senza aver superato le prove di Lettorato 1. Allo stesso modo, gli studenti non possono sostenere le prove di Lettorato 3 senza aver superato le prove di Lettorato 2.
Verbalizzazione del voto finale del corso:
Il voto potrà essere verbalizzato solo durante i periodi relativi alle sessioni d'esame secondo il calendario accademico (nell'orario di ricevimento).
From the Regolamento Didattico di Ateno Art. 23, comma 6:
An exam with a passing score (from 18 to 30) cannot be repeated.
"La valutazione dell'esito dell'esame e, in caso di esito positivo, la relativa votazione, compresa tra diciotto e trenta [...]. L'esame superato non può essere ripetuto."
Lettorato prerequisites
Students cannot sit for Lettorato 2 tests without first having passed all the Lettorato 1 tests. Likewise, students cannot sit for the Lettorato 3 tests without having passed all the Lettorato 2 tests.
Recording of final course mark
The final mark for the course can be recorded on the paper/electronic transcripts only during the official exam periods of the academic calendar (during office hours of the professor).
