LINGUA STRUMENTALE: Il corso prevede il raggiungimento del livello B1+ di conoscenza della Lingua. A questo fine, lo studente potrà/dovrà, come parte del proprio lavoro individuale, integrare la propria preparazione seguendo il corso organizzato dal CLI presso il Dipartimento (ex-Lettorato o esercitazioni) per il livello indicato.
CORSO DOCENTE: conoscenza delle strutture e della adeguata terminologia per una descrizione scientifica di base della lingua inglese nei sui livelli.
INSTRUMENTAL LANGUAGE CLASSES: The course requires the attainment of the proficiency level B1+ of the CEFR. To this end, the students can / will, as part of their individual work, integrate their preparation attending the course organized by CLI for the Department (former 'lettorati') for the indicated level.
COURSE: knowledge of the structures and appropriate terminology for a basic scientific description of the English language in its levels.

- CERTIFICAZIONI DI CAMBRIDGE, FIRST CERTIFICATE O SUPERIORI (B2 o superiori)

Il corso di Lingua Inglese I prevede un corso ufficiale svolto dalle docenti rivolto agli studenti di tutti i curricula. Il corso è un’introduzione ad alcuni aspetti della lingua inglese.
Modulo A: An Introduction to English Linguistics - Prof.ssa Bruti (A-L); Prof.ssa Masi (M-Z)
Argomento: Gli argomenti trattati nel modulo A comprendono un inquadramento della lingua inglese dal punto di vista storico, la struttura morfologica delle parole (processi flessivi, derivazionali e creazione di parole nuove), le parti del discorso (nome, verbo, aggettivo, ecc.); un avviamento alla semantica e alle relazioni di senso (sinonimia, antonimia, iponimia/iperonimia, meronimia ecc.); alcune riflessioni sul ruolo dell’inglese come lingua della comunicazione internazionale e sulla variazione d'uso dell'inglese dal punto di vista geografico e sociale.
Al corso delle docenti sono affiancate esercitazioni scritte e orali, svolte da Collaboratori ed Esperti Linguistici (CEL), per due semestri, che mirano a potenziare tutte e quattro le abilità linguistiche (vedi oltre).
Modulo B: Phonetics and Phonology - Prof.ssa Crawford (3cfu) (tutti gli studenti in gruppo unico)
Argomento: Il modulo B introduce i concetti fondamentali della fonetica e fonologia della lingua inglese, con particolare riferimento al sistema vocalico e consonantico e alla trascrizione fonetica. Il modulo B è tenuto dalla prof.ssa Crawford e si svolgerà nel II sottosemestre del primo semestre.
Lingua Inglese I is a course destined for students of all curricula. It consists of an introduction to the study of the English language (first semester).
Module A: An Introduction to English Linguistics - Prof.ssa Bruti (A-L); Prof.ssa Masi (M-Z)
Content: The topics covered include a historical overview to understand the development of the English language, the morphological structure of words (inflectional, derivational, new formation processes), a description of parts of speech (nouns, adjectives, etc. ); an introduction to semantics and sense relations (synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy/hyperonymy, meronymy, etc.); the role of English as an international language and some features of language variation from a geographical and social perspective.
The course is associated with Instrumental language classes where both written and oral skills are practiced. These activities last throughout the year. They are run by Collaboratori ed Esperti Linguistici (CEL) and aim to improve the four skills.
Module B: Phonetics and Phonology - Prof.ssa Crawford (3cfu) (one group)
Content: Module B introduces the main concepts in phonetics and phonology, with special reference to vowels and consonants and to phonetic transcription. The module is taught by Prof. Crawford and begins in November.

Chi possiede già un dizionario bilingue non deve necessariamente comprarne uno nuovo. Chi invece non l'avesse può scegliere tra il Ragazzini o il Grande Dizionario di inglese della Hoepli.

DICTIONARIES
If you don't have a monolingual dictionary, you could buy either the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary or the Collins Cobuild Advanced Dictionary of English.
Those who own a bilingual dictionary don't need to buy a new one. If you don't, you can choose either Ragazzini 2017 or Grande Dizionario di inglese Hoepli in its most recent version.

- Esame del docente. L'esame relativo al corso del docente consiste in una prova scritta in inglese, della durata di due ore. Si articola in circa 13 quesiti, di cui la maggior parte sono esercizi per verificare la capacità di analisi delle strutture linguistiche e solo alcuni sono domande aperte. Durante il corso verranno eseguiti e corretti diversi esercizi della tipologia della prova finale. Durante l'esame NON si può utilizzare alcun dizionario.
- Prove relative alle esercitazioni (ex lettorati). La verifica delle conoscenze acquisite nel corso delle esercitazioni si articolerà, sul modello degli esami di Cambridge, in una verifica scritta (Use of English, Reading Comprehension e Text Writing) e una verifica orale (Dialogue). Durante la prova scritta sarà verificata anche l'abilità di ascolto con una prova di Listening Comprehension. L'esame ha una votazione complessiva di 100, poiché ogni prova vale 25 punti. Ciascuna prova dovrà essere superata con la votazione di 15 su 25.
Sono esonerati dal sostenere le prove di lettorato colori i quali sono in possesso delle certificazioni indicate sopra (se conseguite da non più di DUE anni). Anche nel caso in cui lo studente sia già in possesso di una certificazione pertinente, si consiglia di partecipare alle attività di esercitazione (corso più avanzato) al fine di mantenere e consolidare il livello di competenza acquisito.
Gli studenti possono iscriversi alle prove di lettorato e prendere visione dei risultati al sito https://elearning.cli.unipi.it.
Gli studenti potranno sostenere l'esame relativo al corso del docente anche prima di aver superato le prove relative alle esercitazioni. Gli studenti che frequentano i gruppi di esercitazione dei livelli Intermediate 2 e Advanced potranno sostenere l'esame relativo al corso del docente al termine del modulo stesso (a partire dalla sessione di gennaio/febbraio). Gli altri (Intermediate 1 e Lower intermediate) a partire da giugno.
La verifica delle conoscenze relative alle esercitazioni avverrà per tutti solo a conclusione delle esercitazioni stesse, quindi a partire da giugno.
Le prove relative alle esercitazioni, o lettorato (scritto, ascolto, e orale), possono essere sostenute separatamente. La validità del risultato positivo è DUE anni accademici (la stessa delle certificazioni internazionali riconosciute). Perciò, se ad esempio una persona ha superato lo scritto ma non la prova di ascolto, può ridare la prova di ascolto entro due anni conservando il punteggio dello scritto. Dopo due anni qualsiasi risultato parziale decade e la prova deve essere sostenuta nuovamente.
Il voto riportato nel corso del docente e quello ottenuto nelle verifiche relative alle esercitazioni (espresso in centesimi) concorrono al voto finale di Lingua inglese I. Il voto finale è unico e i crediti sono assegnati dal docente titolare in un’unica soluzione al completamento delle due parti.
Si ricorda che le prove relative al modulo docente hanno validità di TRE anni, quelle di lettorato DUE.
Exams:
- Exam with the lecturer. This is a written exam, lasting two hours and consisting of approximately 13 questions, 10 of which are closed-ended and 3 open-ended questions. During the course several mock exam questions will be proposed. During the exam students CANNOT use any dictionary.
- Instrumental language test (ex lettorati). The final test will follow the Cambridge exam format. A written test will include Use of English, Reading Comprehension and Text Writing, and the oral will include an Interview. During the written test, Listening-Comprehension skills will also be tested. The overall mark is 100 points, and each part is awarded 25 points. The pass level for each part is 15/25.
The students who have a language certificate obtained within two years prior to the conclusion of the exam are not requested to pass the instrumental language test. They are recommended to attend classes (the advanced/B2 level) to consolidate their skills.
Students can enroll on instrumental language classes and check their results at the following address https://elearning.cli.unipi.it.
Students are allowed to take the exam with their lecturer even before passing the instrumental language test. The students in the groups Intermediate 2 and Advanced can take the exam with their lecturer in January/February. The remaining groups, Intermediate 1 and Lower intermediate, can take this exam starting from June.
The instrumental language test will take place for the first time in June, at the end of the classes. The various parts can be taken separately, in different sessions. A positive result is valid for two years, like international certificates. So, if a student passes the written part but not the listening, he/she can re-take the listening part while his/her written mark is saved for later. After two years, though, partial marks will no longer be saved.
The mark for the instrumental language test (out of 100) will be taken into account by the lecturer when recording the overall mark on the libretto. There is only one mark on the libretto, corresponding to the overall number of credits.
The results of the exam with the lecturer are valid for THREE years.
All'inizio del corso delle esercitazioni linguistiche (Lettorato) verrà svolto un Placement Test (per gli studenti di LINGUE, da non confondere con quello per gli studenti di altri corsi) di natura diagnostica, al fine di creare gruppi di studenti omogenei per livello di competenza.
