Conoscenze

Knowledge

The student who successfully completes the course will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main instruments of textual criticism applied to classical Greek texts. He will be aware of the problems inherent to the manuscript transmission of ancient texts and scholia and will be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of linguistic and metrical problems; he will be aware of the cultural history of the texts discussed during the course and of its relationship with the constitutio textus; he will be able to elaborate a clear and correct apparatus criticus of an ancient text.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The student's ability to explain correctly the main topics presented during the course at the board will be assessed. He/she will be requested to present a few textual problem among those discussed, to evaluate the solutions proposed by earlier critics and to argue in favour of one of more of them; metrical problems may be discussed if they have been presented during the course.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam

Further information:
The student will be assessed on his/her ability to translate from Greek with full awareness of the textual problems, to interpret the relationship between manuscripts and variant readings, to expose particular problems and to discuss the possible solutions.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Archiloco: fr. 1-5, 11, 13, 19, 105, 114, 115, 122, 128, 130, 131, 172, 177, 196a

Saffo, fr. 1, 2, 16, 31, 34, 44, 46-57, 94,96, 98, 102, 105-116, 132, 168b Vogt

Simonide: tutti i frammenti compresi in D. Page, Lyrica Graeca selecta, Oxford 1968

Stesicoro: tutti i frammenti compresi in D. Page, Lyrica Graeca selecta, Oxford 1968

Syllabus

The course is centered on the reading of a significant portion of an ancient text, starting from the manuscript tradition and aiming to elaborate a 'critical edition' of it. This entails the evaluations of manuscript variants and conjectural emendations and the discussion of all the issues that may be relevant for an editor. The lecturer proposes an analysis of the main difficulties and illustrates different methodic approaches to them; the envisaged solutions are discussed together with the students. Particular attention is dedicated to the relationship between the constitution of the text and its interpretation, by discussing particular problems where the reconstruction of the text largely depends by the interpreter's ideas about the context and the author. The subject for the 2014-2015 course is Aeschylus' Agamemnon
