Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will be able to master the basic, most powerful and fundamental tools of celestial mechanics. Even if not proceeding any further in the field, he/she which will be aware of the power and far reaching consequences of celestial mechanics as an extremely rigorous discipline.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student is required to master the concepts and topics discussed during the lectures, as well as to use them in a different context. Clear-cut statements, ability to expose and illustrate the concepts geometrically, attention to the dimensions and orders of magnitude of the relevant quantities are highly appreciated.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam

Further information:
Since there is no written exam, the oral exam is very extensive and covers most aspects of the course in considerable detail. It typically lasts between 1 and 2 hours.

Teaching methods

Delivery: face to face

Learning activities:

  • attending lectures
  • preparation of oral/written report
  • participation in discussions
  • individual study

Attendance: Advised

Teaching methods:

  • Lectures
  • Task-based learning/problem-based learning/inquiry-based learning

Syllabus
Basic elements of celestial mechanics as mathematical tools for a quantitative analysis of the motion of celestial bodies and artificial satellites, of the motion of the earth as a rigid body and of the dynamical effects of tides on the earth, the moon and the solar system.
Bibliography
The main textbook is: "Elementi di meccanica Celeste"- Lezioni di Anna M. Nobili tenute nell'a.a. 2011-2012, raccolte e trascritte in latex dallo studente Daniele Serra. Disponibili agli studenti in formato PDF For some topics reference is made to parts of the following books: -"Orbital motion", di Archie E. Roy, Ed. Adam Hilger -"Introduction a la mecanique celeste", di Jean Kovalevsky, Ed. Librairie Armand Colin, Paris; -"Non gravitational perturbations and satellite geodesy", di A. Milani, A.M. Nobili e P. Farinella, Ed. Adam Hilger
Work placement
I do not quite understand what "work placement" means and am therefore unable to make a choice at this point.
