Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will have some knowledge of the principles of the discipline from the point of view of the Italian tradition of studies. He/she is expected to demonstrate some knowledge of Romance historical linguistics and to be able to take advantage of dictionaries, grammars, studies etc. He/she will be aware of the medieval culture and literature in Romance languages as a whole, and have some knowledge of some particular points of it.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the required texts (see “required reading”) and/or (if he/she attended) of the content of the lessons. Attending students’ assessment will focus on the subjects presented and developed in the lessons.

Syllabus
Preliminary lessons will be devoted to Romance Philology as a discipline, to its history and principles. The first part of the course will include an overview of Romance linguistic history (from latin to romance vernacular languages) and some points of historical grammar (evolution of the vowels, of the declension, of the verbal system). The second part develops very briefly a history of the Romance literatures up to the end of 13th century. Samples of the texts will be read and translated with a commentary.
