Il corso offre un'introduzione alla letteratura tedesca dell’età classico-romantica attraverso l’analisi e il commento di tre romanzi canonici.
Gli studenti che completeranno il corso saranno in grado di esprimersi in modo argomentato sulle principali questioni inerenti all’epoca storico-letteraria in questione, alla sua periodizzazione e ai testi in esame. Avranno inoltre acquisito le conoscenze necessarie per affrontare criticamente e in maniera fondata i temi, le correnti e gli autori principali a cavallo tra Sette e Ottocento in ambito tedesco.
The course offers an introduction to German literature in the Classical and Romantic age through the analysis and commentary of three canonical novels.
Students completing the course will be able to express themselves in a reasoned way on the main issues concerning the historical period under analysis, the literature in question, its periodization and the texts. By the end of the course they will also have acquired the necessary knowledge to critically and fundamentally deal with the main themes, currents and authors between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Germany.

Più in generale, il corso ha l'obiettivo di migliorare le capacità dello studente nell'analisi e nella contestualizzazione dei singoli testi, che verranno affrontati in traduzione e nella lingua originale. L’obiettivo della lettura di brani in lingua, tra i testi selezionati, è sviluppare negli studenti capacità di ordine ermeneutico, oltre che strettamente linguistico. Ci si focalizzerà pertanto sull'analisi tematica e stilistica, con riferimenti alla teoria e alla storia del genere letterario in esame.
More generally, the course aims to improve the student's ability to analyze and contextualize individual texts, which will be addressed in translation and in the original language. The objective of reading extracts in German taken from the selected bibliography is to improve the students’ ability of hermeneutical and linguistic order. We will therefore focus on a thematic and stylistic analysis, with
references to the theory and history of the literary genre in question.
Dopo aver frequentato il corso, gli studenti dovrebbero essere in grado di condurre una discussione critica sui testi in programma in modo appropriato, avendo preventivamente acquisito competenze precise nella materia sulla base delle lezioni svolte e della bibliografia proposta dal docente. Nel novero di tali competenze rientrano sia il possesso delle nozioni fondamentali della materia, sia la capacità di disporre argomentativamente di tali nozioni.
After attending the course, students should be able to appropriately conduct a critical discussion of the texts, after having previously acquired precise skills in the subject on the basis of the lessons and the bibliography proposed by their Professor. These skills include both the possession of the fundamentals of the subject and the ability to dispose of these notions argumentatively.

Lezioni frontali in lingua italiana, lettura e traduzione dei testi in originale. A complemento delle conoscenze e competenze acquisite a lezione sono necessari la lettura integrale dei testi trattati e un lavoro di approfondimento autonomo sui testi critici in bibliografia. Il corso prevede la lettura, la traduzione e il commento di brani scelti in lingua, attività che lo studente dovrà tenere in considerazione per la preparazione dell’esame finale.
Lectures in Italian, reading and translation of original texts. To complement the knowledge and skills acquired in class, the student is required to read all the texts which are discussed in class and must also carry out independent study on critical texts included in the bibliography. The course includes the reading, translation and commentary of extracts chosen in German, activities that the student must take into account for the preparation of the final exam.
Romanzi dell’Età di Goethe.Il corso, suddiviso in due moduli (A e B), è dedicato a tre romanzi, tra i principali della loro epoca e facenti parte del canone della letteratura tedesca: nel modulo A ci si concentrerà sul romanzo Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahredi Goethe; nel modulo B si tratterà l’Hyperiondi Hölderlin e lo Heinrich von Ofterdingendi Novalis. Nei tre romanzi la problematica – di rilevanza epocale – dell’emancipazione dell’individuo e della sua “riuscita” all’interno della società moderna si ricollega a quella, più specifica, della sua formazione in quanto artefice e perfino artista della propria esistenza. Friedrich Schlegel coglie proprio quest’aspetto quando, nel suo celeberrimo saggio sul Meister, scrive che l’opera rappresenterebbe “una teoria dell’arte non incompleta”, in cui non si insegna altro, se non a “vivere secondo la propria natura immutabile”. Il romanzo di Goethe diventa così il paradigma di un’intera epoca letteraria, alle soglie della modernità.
Novels in the Age of Goethe. The course, which is divided into two modules (A and B), is dedicated to three novels among the main ones of their time and part of the canon of German literature: in module A we will focus on the novel Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre by Goethe; in module B we will focus on the Hyperion by Hölderlin and the Heinrich von Ofterdingen by Novalis. In the three novels the issue of emancipation of the individual and his "success" within modern society is linked to his own training as an architect and even as an artist within his own existence. Friedrich Schlegel grasps this aspect when, in his famous essay on the Meister , he writes that the work would represent "a theory of non-incomplete art", in which no one teaches anything other than "to live according to his own immutable nature". Goethe’s novel thus becomes the paradigm of an entire literary era, on the threshold of modernity.

Sono previste due diverse modalità di verifica, a scelta dello studente:
- Prove scritte in itinere, indicativamente previste al termine di entrambi i moduli (A e B), a fine semestre, con l’obiettivo di valutare le conoscenze acquisite tramite la frequenza alle relative lezioni e la lettura dei testi in programma. In seguito, al termine del corso (maggio 2019), è previsto un esame orale vertente esclusivamente sulla traduzione di un singolo brano tratto dalle opere in programma (la lista dei brani selezionati verrà comunicata a lezione) e sulla verifica delle conoscenze storico-letterarie relative al periodo trattato.
- Esame orale in un’unica soluzione (modulo A + modulo B + traduzioni e verifica conoscenze storico-letterarie) a partire dalla sessione estiva a.a. 2018/2019.
The student can choose between two different assessment methods:
- Written tests during the course, indicatively scheduled at the end of both modules (A and B), at the end of the semester, with the aim of evaluating the knowledge acquired through the attendance to the relative lessons and the reading of the texts included in the programme. Later, at the end of the course (May 2019), an oral exam is scheduled exclusively based on the translation of a single passage taken from the works included in the programme (the list of selected extracts will be communicated in class) and on the verification of historical and literary knowledge related to relevant period.
- Oral examination in a single solution (module A + module B + translations and verification of historical and literary knowledge) starting from summer session a.y. 2018/2019.

Il corso si svolgerà in entrambi i semestri dell’a.a. 2018/2019. Le lezioni relative al modulo A verranno tenute dalla prof. Giovanna Cermelli nel primo semestre, quelle relative al modulo B dal prof. Francesco Rossi nel secondo semestre.
Il corso avrà inizio lunedì 1 ottobre alle ore 17.30 in aula B3 (Palazzo Boilleau), con il seguente orario: lunedì 17.30-18.30 (B3); giovedì 10.15-11.45 (Ricci 3). Il corso si svolgerà in entrambi i semestri (primo e secondo).

The course will take place in both semesters of the academic year 2018/2019. The lessons related to module A will be held by prof. Giovanna Cermelli in the first semester, whereas those related to module B will be held by prof. Francesco Rossi in the second semester.
The course will begin on Monday, October 1st at 5.30 pm in room B3 (Palazzo Boilleau), with the following schedule: Monday 5.30pm-6.30pm (B3); Thursday 10.15-11.45 (Ricci 3). The course will take place in both semesters (first and second)
