Al termine del corso lo studente avrà acquisito conoscenze fondamentali sulla storia della letteratura inglese dal Settecento alla contemporaneità, con i suoi protagonisti, le evoluzioni e i movimenti più significativi. A ciò si accompagnano precise messe a fuoco su testi di vari periodi e generi, con un approfondimento specifico sulle cifre formali, gli orientamenti ideologico-culturali e la fenomenologia della narrativa dell'Ottocento. Lo studente sarà in grado di misurarsi con temi, problematiche e paradigmi rilevanti per gli ambiti letterari investigati, di contestualizzarli e argomentarli con consapevolezza critica e strumenti metodologici aggiornati e adeguati.
The students who successfully complete this course will acquire a general knowledge of the main literary movements and cultural developments, authors and works relating to the history of English Literature, from the eighteenth century to the contemporary age. They will also have the ability to single out and contextualize fundamental topics and paradigms, along with the basic features of literary genres, and discuss their relationship with historical, artistic and cultural phenomena on a larger scale. This knowledge will be further supported by the use of updated methodological approaches.
This year, the first part of the 2018/19 course ("corso monografico"/ "core module") will specifically deal with relevant modes and developments of Gothic-fiction strands in nineteenth-century English literature.
La verifica delle conoscenze acquisite sarà oggetto del colloquio orale in cui consisterà l'esame finale, nel corso del quale si accerterà il conseguimento dei seguenti obiettivi:
- piena familiarità con i contenuti inerenti alle due parti in cui si articola il programma (Corso Monografico e Parte Istituzionale)
- conoscenza dei testi, letti, tradotti oralmente dall'inglese e analizzati con strumenti teorici e metodologici adeguati.
Students will be assessed on the basis of their ability to explain and discuss the course contents thoughtfully and with propriety of expression. They are also supposed to show critical awareness of literary genres and terminology as well as of the cultural framework and developments of English Literature across the centuries. Futhermore, they are required to demonstrate their direct knowledge of the course material, especially primary sources. During the examination, they will be asked to translate (from English into Italian) a few excerpts of such sources.
The final oral exam will take into equal account the results of the activities relating to Part I (Core Module) and Part II (the course unit centred on the History of Literature from the eighteenth century to the contemporary age). The exam can be taken in any of the scheduled sessions throughout the regular exam period.
Al termine del corso lo studente sarà in grado di delineare in modo sufficientemente autonomo un'attenta mappa concettuale di sviluppi, interrelazioni e importanti fenomenologie della storia della letteratura inglese dal Settecento alla contemporaneità, con una particolare focalizzazione sull'Ottocento. A questa capacità di inquadramento cognitivo si affiancherà l'affinamento del registro lessicale, di potenzialità argomentative ed ermeneutiche essenziali nella prassi dell'esegesi letteraria.
Through this course, students will develop some crucial intellectual skills such as the ability to draw a conceptual map of the evolutions, interrelations, and phenomenologies informing the History of English Literature from the eighteenth century to the contemporary age. Furthermore, they will be able to provide a detailed illustration of the stylist features, structures of symbols and character types of nineteenth-century Gothic fiction in its various manifestations and evolutions.
This cognitive framing skill will be joined by a familiarization with the appropriate linguistic registers and by the strengthening of argumentative and hermeneutic faculties.
Questo insegnamento non prevede attività pratiche o di laboratorio, per cui la verifica diretta delle capacità analitiche e critico-argomentative avrà luogo in sede di esame finale.
This course does not include periodical practical tests. The assessment of the students' acquired skills will therefore take place during the conclusive oral exam.
Lo studente svilupperà o affinerà capacità ermeneutiche, una sensibilità al linguaggio e alle modalità rappresentative/comunicative della letteratura e un approccio consapevole alla decodifica narratologica dei testi.
Students will refine their evaluating criteria and engage with commentaries on the language and representational/communicative modes of literary writing. They will also learn to approach literary texts through a narratological perspective.
Questo insegnamento non prevede attività seminariali o di laboratorio, per cui il raggiungimento dell'obiettivo inerente alla responsabilizzazione e all'accuratezza nello svolgimento di un compito sarà verificato nel corso dell'esame finale.
This course does not include seminar or lab activities. The assessment of the students' behaviours will therefore take place during the conclusive oral exam.
Affinché lo studente possa seguire il corso in modo proficuo, si richiedono una propensione all'analisi delle opere letterarie e un'adeguata capacità di misurarsi con i testi anche sul piano linguistico, essendo i testi primari e secondari indicati in programma prevalentemente scritti in inglese.
Students who attend this course should have an inclination for the humanities and, specifically, literary studies. Since both the primary and secondary texts listed in the syllabus are in English, they should also have a basic knowledge of this language.

The English Literature I exam is a mandatory requirement for a subsequent enrollment in the English Literature II course unit.

Il programma di questo insegnamento da 9 CFU (54 ore di lezioni frontali) si compone di due diverse parti, entrambe essenziali e costitutive, che si articoleranno in sequenza:
- CORSO MONOGRAFICO: “Fenomenologie del gotico nella narrativa britannica ottocentesca”
- PARTE ISTITUZIONALE E LETTURE: Lezioni propedeutiche allo studio della letteratura e all’inquadramento dei testi, necessarie affinché lo studente possa poi approfondire e perfezionare le conoscenze richieste relativamente alla storia letteraria inglese dal Settecento alla contemporaneità
Corso monografico: “Fenomenologie del gotico nella narrativa britannica ottocentesca”
Descrizione: Il corso intende indagare le cifre stilistiche, le strutture simboliche e le tipologie di personaggi caratterizzanti alcuni testi narrativi ottocenteschi che intrecciano un dialogo con il genere gotico. Ne deriva un ventaglio fenomenologico che dalle atmosfere estetico-decadenti e di cupo sensazionalismo si estende ai paradigmi del perturbante e del fantastico-vampiresco, dello sdoppiamento di personalità, dell’evoluzionismo darwiniano e della Degeneration. Le lezioni prevedono una fase propedeutica di introduzione alla narratologia e una serie di considerazioni sul contesto storico-culturale, i codici e le convenzioni letterarie dell’Ottocento britannico. Ciò costituirà la premessa per lo studio di cinque opere emblematiche, che saranno esaminate in relazione sia alla sintassi del gotico, sia alle specificità dell’immaginario autoriale di Oscar Wilde, R.L. Parte istituzionale e letture
Descrizione: una serie di lezioni conclusive mirerà a fornire delucidazioni e strumenti metodologici essenziali per lo studio della storia letteraria britannica dal Settecento ai giorni nostri. Gli studenti sono tenuti ad acquisire e approfondire in autonomia le conoscenze richieste avvalendosi di manuali e testi specificamente indicati dalla docente. This English Literature I course (Curriculum B) is structured into two different units:
- PART I (Core Module): although its specific content and reading lists change every year, this part can be described as monographic since it investigates a given period/genre and a circumscribed range of authors and poetical or prose works. It carries out a detailed analysis of such topics and output;
- PART II (Literary History Outline): this second part helps students to deal with issues, themes and movements crucially related to English Literature and its mainstream developments, from the eighteenth century to the contemporary age. Most of the titles (poems, novels, short-stories, and plays) included in the required readings are introduced and discussed in a textual as well as extratextual perspective.
Academic year 2018/19:
PART I: “Gothic Modes and Developments in Nineteenth-Century British Fiction”
This course investigates the stylistic features, structures of symbols and character types informing a selection of nineteenth-century narrative texts which drew on, or originally developed, Gothic- fiction modes and strategies. Such constitutive traits range from aesthetic, decadent and sensation elements to the paradigm of the uncanny and fantastic/vampire literature, from the split-personality motif to Darwinian as well as “Degeneration” theories. Lectures will start with an introduction to the principles and categories of narratology, followed by an outline of nineteenth-century England’s historical and cultural background, literary taste and conventions. The final and most important stage consists in the study of five notable works, which will be examined both from Gothic perspectives and in connection with the creative imaginary of Oscar Wilde, R.L. Stevenson and J.W. Polidori. [For further details, see Bibliography, Section 1]

La verifica delle conoscenze, delle capacità e dei comportamenti acquisiti dallo studente avviene tramite un colloquio orale unico (in italiano, ma con lettura e traduzione simultanea di passi dai testi in lingua originale) all’interno delle regolari sessioni di esame fissate dalla docente, senza prove intermedie.
Il colloquio avrà una durata di circa 45 minuti e si articolerà in due momenti:
a/ domande inerenti agli autori, agli argomenti e alle opere affrontate nel corso monografico, con riscontri diretti su passi significativi dei testi primari
b/ domande inerenti a periodizzazione, contesti, generi, movimenti e autori rappresentativi della letteratura inglese dal Settecento alla contemporaneità, con riscontri diretti sui passi delle opere primarie indicate nella bibliografia (sezione 2) della Parte Istituzionale del programma.
La prova non è superata se il candidato non è in grado di articolare con sufficiente chiarezza argomentativa e/o profondità le tematiche e/o le problematiche principali legate all'analisi di autori, testi e periodi presi in esame; se mostra forti lacune su contenuti e parti del programma; se non riesce a stabilire un confronto culturalmente consapevole e soddisfacente sul piano linguistico con testi scritti in inglese.
The evaluation method consists in a final oral exam, which foreign students may choose to take in Italian or in English, during one of the scheduled sessions throughout the regular exam period.
The oral exam will be about 45 minutes long and will unfold in two steps:
a/ a series of questions relating to the authors, topics, and works analyzed in Part I. The acquaintance with the primary texts listed in Section 1 of the Bibliography will also be ascertained
b/ a series of questions relating to the periods, contexts, genres, movements, and main authors in the History of English Literature from the eighteenth century to the contemporary age (Part II). The acquaintance with the primary texts listed in Section 2 of the Bibliography will also be ascertained.
Students will not pass the exam if they are unable to appropriately delve into the works' meaning and structure, into the main issues and topics involved and the contexts of literary history itself. They must be familiar with all the course contents as well as with texts written in English.
