Istituzioni di Filologia medievale e umanistica.

Knowledge

The student who successfully completes the course will have the ability to read, translate and have a linguistic and philological comprehension of the texts belonging to medieval and humanistic literature; will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of philological techniques; will be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of medieval and humanistic latin literary culture; will be aware of the main questions about the medieval latin language and the textual criticism into the field of the medieval and humanistic literature.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. - During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression. - The student's ability to explain correctly the main topics presented during the course at the board will be assessed. - In the written exam (3 hours, choice of 6 essay questions), the student must demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and to organise an effective and correctly written reply. - With the oral presentation, to be made to the teacher and the other students, the student must demonstrate the ability to approach a circumscribed research problem, and organise an effective exposition of the results. - The student must demonstrate the ability to put into practice and to execute, with critical awareness, the activities illustrated or carried out under the guidance of the teacher during the course.

È consigliabile la conoscenza della lingua latina e il superamento dell'esame di Lingua e letteratura latina I.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Il Corso fornisce le seguenti nozioni basilari di filologia medievale e umanistica: 1. Conoscenza della tecnica filologica applicata ai testi latini del Medioevo e dell’Umanesimo e storia della filologia. 2. Fondazione della disciplina e metodologia. 3. Fenomenologia della lingua latina nel Medioevo e nell’Umanesimo. 4. L’edizione critica dei testi medievali e umanistici. 5. Lettura, traduzione e commento di brani significativi della produzione letteraria latina medievale e umanistica.

Syllabus

The course will offer basic concepts about Medieval and Humanistic philology, its historical academic foundation and its methodology. Particular attention will be paid to the transmission of the medieval and humanistic latin texts and to the main questions about ecdotic methods. A part of the course will be dedicated to show the most useful tools for reading and for a critical edition of the medieval and humanistic literary texts. It will be also offered a history of the medieval latin language and of the medieval manuscript and printed book during the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

5. Dispensa dei testi medievali e umanistici letti e commentati a lezione, con traduzione italiana (la dispensa raccoglierà anche una sintesi dei materiali presentati a lezione e sarà a disposizione al termine del corso sul Portale Moodle e presso la segreteria di Palazzo Venera, II piano).

Modalità d'esame

L'esame si svolgerà in forma orale: sarà verificata la conoscenza dei manuali di filologia e di lingua latina medievale e umanistica e dei saggi relativi alla storia della filologia; sarà inoltre richiesta la lettura, la traduzione e il commento dei brani testuali esaminati a lezione.
