Al termine del corso lo studente avrà acquisito:
- specifiche conoscenze relative alla produzione letteraria inglese del periodo early modern, raggiunta attraverso lo studio di vari testi poetici, drammatici e in prosa;
- una buona conoscenza del contesto storico-culturale dell’epoca;
- gli strumenti teorico-metodologici fondamentali per lo studio dei testi narrativi, poetici e drammatici.
Lo studente avrà inoltre acquisito autonomamente una buona conoscenza della storia letteraria inglese dalle origini al secondo Seicento, all’interno della quale saprà identificare i diversi paradigmi letterari, contestualizzare gli autori e seguire l'evoluzione di ciascun genere.
Le sue conoscenze linguistiche gli permetteranno, inoltre, di leggere i testi in lingua originale.
The students who successfully complete the course will have achieved:
- specific knowledge of early modern English literature through the study of a number of poetic, prose and dramatic texts.
- general knowledge of English literary history from its origins to the Restoration (included). They will also be able to contextualize the main features of literary genres, modes and conventions.
- awareness of the methodological tools necessary for the study of poetic, fictional and dramatic texts.
Le conoscenze storico-culturali e letterarie acquisite nell’ambito del corso,saranno valutate tramite un colloquio orale durante il quale lo studente dovrà dimostrare:
- di conoscere gli argomenti trattati durante il corso
- di essere in grado di identificare le caratteristiche fondamentali dei paradigmi letterari delle diverse epoche e quelle specifiche dei vari autori, collocandoli opportunamente all’interno del sistema culturale di appartenenza.
L'esame orale finale verificherà anche le conoscenze linguistiche attraverso la lettura e la traduzione dei testi primari.
The students will be assessed on their capacity to discuss course contents (Module A) and the readings in Module B using an appropriate terminology. During the oral exam, the students are expected to demonstrate their knowledge of the history of English Literature from its origins to the Restoration (included), their ability to identify the main features of literary genres, modes and conventions, and their possession of the basic tools for the exploration of poetical, prose and dramatic texts. They should also be able to look at literature in its relationship with its historical and social context, with art and with the history of thought.
Al termine del corso lo studente saprà:
- comunicare in un linguaggio e un registro appropriat i contenuti relativi agli argomenti letterari del corso;
- condurre in modo autonomo lo studio della storia letteraria e contestualizzarne le opere fondamentali;
- leggere e tradurre dall'originale alcune opere in lingua inglese del periodo storico-letterario di riferimento.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- discuss literary topics in suitable language and register;
- study literary history and contextualize major works;
- read and translate from English works from Chaucer to the late 17th century.
L’esame prevede un colloquio orale in un’unica soluzione (modulo A + modulo B). Il colloquio d'esame si svolgerà prevalentemente in italiano. Agli studenti verrà chiesto di rispondere in inglese ad almeno una domanda sui testi in lingua indicati in bibliografia; chi lo desideri potrà scegliere di sostenere una parte più ampia o anche la totalità del colloquio in inglese.
The final oral exam will assess the students' capacity to organize and coherently formulate a discussion on literary topics. In addition, it will test the degree of autonomy in individual study, as well as the capacity to contextualize literary texts within their historical and cultural background, and to read and translate them.
Tramite la frequenza delle lezioni e/o lo studio in autonomia gli studenti potranno:
- sviluppare la propria consapevolezza riguardo alle problematiche connesse con lo studio della storia letteraria, dei testi e della bibliografia critica;
- acquisire accuratezza e precisione nello svolgimento delle attività connesse con il suddetto studio;
- affinare capacità e sensibilità riguardo a questioni legate all'uso e al riconoscimento delle fonti critiche.
Agli studenti non frequentanti è richiesto lo studio dei materiali aggiuntivi indicati.
Students will be able to:
- develop awareness of issues connected with the study of literary history, of texts and critical material;
- acquire accuracy and precision in performing activities related to their study;
- refine their approach to literature and criticism in general.
L’esame orale finale verificherà il grado di consapevolezza raggiunto dallo studente riguardo alle problematiche connesse con lo studio della storia letteraria e dei contenuti del corso (testi e bibliografia critica). Inoltre, permetterà di valutare l’accuratezza e la precisione raggiunte nello studio e di sondare la capacità acquisita di utilizzare le fonti critiche.
The final oral exam will assess the degree of awareness students have developed in the study of literary history, of texts and of critical material. Moreover, it twill also test the accuracy and precision in performing activities related to their study, as well as their awarenes of relevant issues in criticism.

The students are expected to have passed English Language I and English Literature I. These requirements do not apply to international students.
L'attività didattica si svolgerà attraverso lezioni frontali, con l'ausilio di slides e filmati. Le lezioni si terranno, di norma, in italiano; alcuni argomenti potranno tuttavia essere trattati in inglese.
Il colloquio d'esame si svolgerà prevalentemente in italiano. Agli studenti verrà chiesto di rispondere in inglese ad almeno una domanda sui testi in lingua indicati in bibliografia e/o sugli argomenti affrontati in inglese durante le lezioni; chi lo desidera potrà scegliere di sostenere una parte più ampia o anche la totalità del colloquio in inglese.
Agli studenti verrà richiesto di scaricare materiali didattici dal sito di elearning del corso (la piattaforma Moodle). Moodle verrà altresì usato per comunicazioni docente-studenti.

Il corso è articolato in due distinte sezioni:

- Modulo B: lavoro indipendente dello studente: storia della letteratura e testi (primari e secondari).
Modulo A:
Titolo del corso: “La letteratura inglese early modern: testi e contesti”
Argomento del corso: Il corso vuole offrire una panoramica della produzione letteraria inglese del periodo early modern. Dopo alcuni cenni teorico-metodologici e un’introduzione al contesto storico-culturale dell’epoca, verranno esaminati vari testi poetici, drammatici e in prosa.
Testi primari oggetto del corso: prosa: Thomas More, Utopia (estratti); John Lyly, Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit (estratti); Thomas Nashe, The Unfortunate Traveller (estratti) e Francis Bacon, "Of Great Place". Poesia: una scelta di opere di Thomas Wyatt, Philip Sidney, William Shakespeare, John Donne, Andrew Marvell e John Milton (estratti da Paradise Lost). Teatro: Thomas Kyd, The Spanish Tragedy (estratti); Christopher Marlowe, Dr. Faustus (estratti), e William Shakespeare, King Richard III (completo).
Tutti i testi primari devono essere letti in lingua originale. All’esame lo studente dovrà dimostrare di saper leggere e tradurre i testi in lingua. Verrà inoltre verificata la conoscenza dei testi secondari in bibliografia.
Modulo B:
STORIA DELLA LETTERATURA E TESTI
Il modulo B prevede lo studio della Storia letteraria inglese dalle origini alla Restaurazione compresa (fino al 1700). All’interno di questo orizzonte cronologico, lo studente dovrà saper identificare le caratteristiche fondamentali dei paradigmi culturali e letterari delle varie epoche, generi e movimenti, nonché le poetiche e le opere più significative dei vari autori, che dovranno essere collocati opportunamente all’interno del sistema culturale a cui appartengono. A tale scopo è obbligatorio lo studio del Manuale e delle sezioni indicate di English Literature in Context, .
Lo studio della letteratura sarà integrato dalla lettura e dal commento di una serie di testi in lingua originale. Lo studente dovrà dimostrare di saper leggere e tradurre i testi in lingua.
Verrà, inoltre, verificato lo studio dei Testi secondari indicati nel programma.
The structure of the Course is composed of two different sections: 1. a module that is taught during classes; 2. a list of readings (both primary and secondary texts) which students are expected to read, discuss and contextualize autonomously, since they are supposed to have already acquired a sufficiently good knowledge of English literary history:
- Module A: (54 front hours, winter semester) Early Modern English Literature: Texts and Contexts
- Module B (individual study): literary history and texts (both primary and secondary).
