Knowledge

The recommended entry proficiency level in English is B1+. At the end of the course, students must prove to have reached the B2 level.

The course will focus on spoken and written academic English, and in particular on:

  • written conference presentations and announcements
  • abstracts
  • powerpoint presentations
  • conference presentations

The course will focus on aspects of English grammar and vocabulary suitable for academic written and spoken communication at a B2 level of the CEFR.

 

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The exam is identical for both attending and non—attending students. All information about the exam format and contents is provided online on Moodle. 

There are no prerequisites. However, a good entry B1 proficiency level is recommended.

In order to be admitted to the exam, students must sign up for it on the dedicated portal before the deadline. Students who do not comply with the sign-up regulations will not be allowed to take the test.

The final exam consists in:
1) a written test (multiple choice questions and writing task). After this test, students must complete the exam within 12 months.

 2) an oral test. In order to take this test, students must have obtained a positive results in the computerized test (B2).

Skills

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • read and understand the main points in academic texts in the humanities (e.g. journal articles, text books, specialized magazines)
  • write a short abstract
  • prepare slides for presentations
  • give simple oral presentations on specific topics in the Humanities

 

Assessment criteria of skills

Attendance is recommended. The course will be held in the form of a hands-on workshop, with activities on authentic academic texts from some of the major international academic journals in the field of Italian Studies, Classics and the Humanities. 

Behaviors

Students will be able to discuss and defend their arguments in an academic context. 

Students will be able to write a simple abstract. 

Students will be able to prepare a powerpoint presentation. 

Assessment criteria of behaviors

The newly acquired skills will be assessed through group work and interactive activities throughout the course. 

Prerequisites

A strong B1+ level is recommended as the entry level. An entry level test will be administered at the beginning of the course. 

Teaching methods

The course is organized as a hands-on workshop. Students will work on authentic academic texts taken from international journals and specialized magazines/programs in the fields of the Humanities, Classics and Italian Studies. 

Syllabus

The course will focus on Academic English reading comprehension and writing. Students will work on short essays and abstracts, power point conference presentations and general conversation about topics of interest in the humanities. 

A B2 level "lettorato" is associated with the course, starting in the first term. Students in need to consolidate general English ability are recommended to attend the course, which is shared with Informatica Umanistica students.
