Tema del Corso: "Il linguaggio tra verità, conoscenza e normatività".
Lo studente potrà acquisire conoscenze relative a:
- La caratterizzazione del nesso tra linguaggio e verità proposta dalla filosofia analitica del linguaggio nella sua evoluzione e sviluppo storico.
- Le diverse dimensioni del linguaggio: rappresentazionale, concettuale e cooperativa.
- L'analisi del carattere normativo del significato linguistico: la concezione pragmatista delle condizioni di successo dell'uso linguistico, le regola linguistiche e la normatività del significato, la nozione di spazio delle ragioni, la nozione di pratica discorsiva.
The student will acquire knowledge about:
- The characterization of the relation between langauge and truh put forward by the analytic philosophy of language and its historical development;
- The various dimensions of language: representational, conceptual and cooperative.
- The normative character of linguistic content: the pragmatist conception of the conditions of success of language use, the linguistic rules and the normativity of language, the notion of a space of reasons, the notion of a discursive practice.
La verifica delle conoscenze avviene attraverso un colloquio con il docente durante la prova d'esame orale.
The knowledges acquired by the student will be assessed during the oral exam.
Lo studente sarà orientato sia alla comprensione del ruolo centrale del linguaggio nel pensiero filosofico contemporaneo che al raffinamento della capacità di analizzare approfonditamente un testo filosofico.
The student will be guided both to understand of the central role of language in contemporary philosophical thought and to improve his/her ability to analyze a philosophical paper.
Per l'accertamento delle capacità lo studente dovrà svolgere in sede d'esame orale una presentazione in powerpoint relativa a un aspetto tematico rilevante tra quelli discussi nel corso.
During the oral exam the student will give a powerpoint presentation of one of the relevant thematic aspect discussed in the course.
Lo studente potrà acquisire maggiore familiarità con i requisiti richiesti per una ricerca filosofica scientificamente adeguata.
The student of Philosophy will become more familiar with the requirements of a scientifically adequate philosophical research.
Parte della letteratura in lingua inglese e preparazione di elaborati costituiscono elementi per verificare l'acquisizione di una maggiore familiarità con i requisiti richiesti per una comprensione e/o produzione scientifica e/o una professionalizzazione di portata internazionale.
The fact that part of the bibliography of the course is in English and the fact that students are required to prepare papers during the course allow to assess the acquisition on their part of the familiarity with the scientific understanding/production and the ability to internationally professionalize.
Non sono richieste particolari propedeuticità. Naturalmente una certa conoscenza di base logica e/o linguistica può agevolare il percorso formativo.

Il linguaggio tra verità, conoscenza e pratiche sociali.
Il corso sarà diviso in un tre Moduli Tematici, articolati in fasi settimanali ciascuna dedicata all'analisi di un saggio: i testi discussi saranno reperibili nella pagina del corso sulla piattaforma Moodle.
PRIMO MODULO (Prof. Enrico Moriconi) / Linguaggio e verità
(A) Aspetti fondanti della filosofia analitica del linguaggio, a partire da Gottlob Frege e Bertrand Russell: il nesso essenziale tra significato e verità, il modello del significato a due dimensioni (senso e denotazione), il trattamento funzionale dei concetti, il principio di composizionalità. la nozione di proposizione, la tensione tra struttura grammaticale e forma logica.
(B) Concezione vero-condizionale del significato linguistico: forma logica come interfaccia tra grammatica e semantica, estensione e intensione, semantica a mondi possibili, mondi e contesti come indici di valutazione delle espressioni linguistiche, il problema del riferimento diretto.
SECONDO MODULO (Prof. Carlo Marletti) / Dimensioni del significato linguistico
(A) Funzione rappresentazionale del linguaggio: debolezza teorica della nozione di intensione, la sfida del riferimento diretto, l'esternalismo semantico, carattere estensionale del mapping rappresentazionale delle forme linguistiche, significato rappresentazionale come riferimento.
(B) Dimensione concettuale del linguaggio: l'equivoco delle spiegazioni monodimensionali del significato, concettualiste o di riduzione ad esperienza socio-pragmatica, avere concetti di qualcosa vs. avere concezioni di qualcosa, la dinamica epistemologica tra esternalismo dei concetti e internalismo delle concezioni.
(C) Funzione cooperativa del linguaggio: osservazioni sui modi complessi coi quali le convenzioni del linguaggio risolvono problemi di coordinazione tra parlanti, tanto rispetto alla rappresentazione di un mondo comune quanto relativamente alla diversità delle loro prospettive.
TERZO MODULO (Prof. Giacomo Turbanti) / Significato linguistico e normatività.
I parlanti usano il linguaggio all’interno di pratiche comunicative, governate da regole che stabiliscono quando e come è corretto utilizzare le espressioni del linguaggio. Cominceremo ad affrontare questo tema affrontando le difficoltà dell'approccio pragmatista classico che riduce il significato di una mossa linguistica alle condizioni del suo successo. Prenderem poi in considerazione un’idea più articolata di contenuto normativo si sviluppa a partire da una tesi forte sulla razionalità: essere razionali vuol dire essere soggetti alla forza delle ragioni. In questo senso, le regole di una pratica linguistica sono da considerarsi regole per dare e ricevere ragioni. L’idea allora è che queste regole possano determinare direttamente il contenuto delle espressioni linguistiche utilizzate per compiere mosse nella pratica. Si seguirà lo sviluppo di questa idea nel pensiero di Wilfrid Sellars e del suo allievo Robert Brandom.
Language between truth, knowledge and social practices
The course will be divided in three modules of four weeks. Each week will be devoted to the analysis of one essay. The texts will be available on the course website on Moodle.
FIRST MODULE (Prof. Enrico Moriconi) / Language and truth
(A) The fundamental aspects of the analytic philosophy of language, starting from Gottlob Frege and Bertrand Russell: the essential relation between meaning and truth, the two dimensional model of meaning (sense and reference), the functional analysis of concepts, the principle of compositionality, the notion of proposition, the tension between grammtical structure and logical form.
(B) The truth-conditional conception of linguistic meaning: logical form as an interface between grammar and semantics, the notions of extension and intension, the possible-world semantics, the idea of worlds and contexts as indexes for the valuation of linguistic expressions, the problem of direct reference.
SECOND MODULE (Prof. Carlo Marletti) / Dimensions of linguistic meaning
(A) The representational function of the language: the theoretic weakness of the notion of intension, the challenge of direct reference, semantic externalism, the extensional character of the representational mapping of linguistic forms, the idea of representational meaning as reference.
(B) The conceptual dimension of language: the mistake of the monodimensional accounts of language in both their conceptualist and socio-pragmatic version, the distinction between having concepts and having conceptions of somenthing, the epistemologic dynamics between the externalism of concepts and the internalism of conceptions.
(C) The cooperative function of language: remarks about the complex ways in which language conventions solve the coordination problems between speakers with respect to both the representation of a shared world and the difference of perspectives.
THIRD MODULE (Prof. Giacomo Turbanti) / Linguistic meaning and normativity
Speakers use language inside communicative practices, that are governed by rules establishing when and how it is correct to use linguistic expressions. We will begin the analysis of this theme by dealing with the difficulties of the approach of Classical American Pragmatism which reduces the meaning of a linguistic move to the conditions of its success. We will then consider a more articulated idea of normative content, that is developed on the basis of a strong thesis about rationality: to be rational is to be sensitive to the force of reasons. In this sense the rules of a linguistic practice are to be considered as rules for giving and asking for reasons. The idea, therefore, is that these rules can directly determine the content of the linguistic expressions that are used to make moves in the practice. We will follow the development of this idea in Wilfrid Sellars and Robert Brandom.

L'esame è costituito da una prova orale nella quale lo studente sarà a colloquio con i docenti.
La prova orale è avviata dalla presentazione del testo in powerpoint preparato dallo studente su un tema rilevante del corso. Segue poi un colloquio relativo alle conoscenza acquisite dallo studente sui testi d'esame e l'eventuale bibliografia di contorno.
The exam is oral. The student will be examined by the teachers.
The colloquium will start with the power point presentation on one of the relevant themes of the course. The rest of the colloquium will assess the student's knowledge of the course bibliography.
Before the exam, the student will have to submit an essay on one of the papers discussed in the course.
