Conoscenze

  • animal studies e loro applicazioni più significative alla letteratura;
  • dibattito teorico sui generi del racconto e del saggio con particolare riferimento alla letteratura statunitense tra Ottocento e primo Novecento;
  • figure e momenti significativi della storia letteraria nordamericana.
Knowledge

At the end of the course the student will possess a thorough knowledge of:

  • contemporary animal studies and their most notable application to the literary domain;
  • the theoretical debate around the short story and the essay as genres with particular reference to 19th and early 20th-century North American literature;
  • fundamental figures and moments of North American literary history.
Modalità di verifica delle conoscenze

La verifica delle conoscenze avverrà attraverso

  • una relazione orale di fronte alla classe, nella quale si verificherà l’acquisizione degli strumenti critici e teorici proposti dal docente, applicati a testi narrativi o saggistici non presenti nella bibliografia primaria;
  • un esame orale finale in cui lo studente dovrà dimostrare sia la conoscenza delle teorie critiche presentate durante il corso e la loro rilevanza per i testi primari proposti, sia la capacità di elaborarle e applicarle autonomamente;
Assessment criteria of knowledge

Acquired knowledge will be assessed through:

  • an oral report in class which will verify the acquisition of specific knowledge and understanding of the critical and theoretical tools presented in class applied to brief narrative and essayistic texts not included in the official reading list;
  • a final oral exam in which students will have to demonstrate a good knowledge of cultural and literary theories; they will also be expected to illustrate and analyse primary sources belonging to various genres and periods of North American literature and to discuss secondary sources providing different critical approaches;
  • the final oral exam will also assess the knowledge of the main periods in North American literary history.

  • applicare metodologie critiche e strumenti analitici avanzati a testi narrativi e saggistici;
  • leggere, interpretare e riferire oralmente su testi critici riguardanti aspetti teorici o culturali relativi al tema del corso;
  • contestualizzare i testi primari nel contesto storico e letterario di riferimento;
  • riconoscere e commentare i dati salienti dei testi primari e secondari;
Skills

At the end of the course students will be able to:

  • apply advanced methodological and theoretical tools to the analysis of narrative and essayistic texts;
  • read, analyse and report orally on critical or theoretical essays concerning literary and cultural issues variously connected with the topics of the course;
  • contextualise narrative texts, namely short stories, within the appropriate cultural and literary background;
  • comment on various aspects of literary texts; illustrate and discuss literary and cultural topics;
  • communicate their conclusions, and the knowledge and rationale underpinning them, in a clear and unambiguous way.

Assessment criteria of skills

Students will be required to prepare an oral report in English based on a primary text (different from those proposed in the syllabus) through which their ability to autonomously apply the theoretical tools presented during the course will be tested.

The final oral exam will test the students' capacity to comment on various aspects of literary texts,

to use appropriate tools to deal with specific textual questions, and to resort to an appropriate linguistic register. The final oral exam will in addition verify the students’ capacity to deal with literary history in an autonomous way.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

The course aims to develop a conscious attitude, on the part of the student, towards the reflection and analysis of literary and textual issues and the relationship between text and context.

During the course students will also be asked to organize their work so as to be able to meet deadlines and to handle data and bibliographic material in a responsible way.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

The title of the course is American Bestiaries: Animal Presences in North American Short Stories and Essays. Animal studies have recently become one of the most fertile theoretical fields, whose critical fruits have allowed to shed new light on already well known texts and contexts. The animal, which has long been interpreted as an essentially symbolic accessory, has begun to be recognized as a fundamental gear in the construction of literary texts.

The course intends to explore North American shorter prose – both short stories and essays – from the beginnings to contemporary times, privileging a discourse that includes some of the most important and representative voices in the history of the literary transposition of human/animal encounters, from Washington Irving to Jonathan Franzen.
