The course will consist in the presentation and comment of a series of PDF files with images and texts which, included in Moodle, will be an essential part of the material to be studied for the exam.
Decifrare la diversità umana
In tempi di cancel culture, che investe il rapporto con l’eredità del passato, è opportuno osservare storicamente come la cultura occidentale si sia interrogata, fin dall’antico, sulle diversità evidenti nella specie umana (aspetto esteriore, struttura corporea ed ethos). A fornire risposte si è dedicata in particolare quell’antropologia che dalla seconda metà dell’Ottocento ha teso a diventare disciplina autonoma, variamente sviluppandosi nel secolo successivo. Tuttavia il corso si propone anche di considerare il lungo periodo precedente, che accompagnò l’espansione coloniale europea e costrinse a un incessante confronto con altre forme di umanità.
Deciphering human diversity
In times of cancel culture, which affects the relationship with the legacy of the past, it is appropriate to historically observe how Western culture has questioned, since ancient times, the evident diversities in the human species (external appearance, body structure and ethos). In particular, anthropology that strived to become an independent discipline from the second half of the nineteenth century has been providing answers to the question, with further and varied developments in the following century. However the course also aims to trace an earlier path, which accompanied the European colonial expansion and forced an incessant confrontation with other forms of humanity.
