Assessment criteria of knowledge

The course will be coordinated in a seminary way, so most of the knowledge acquired will be tested during class discussions. The final examination will be oral.

Skills

The student will learn to analyse texts in a historical perspective, and to explore explicit and implicit inter-textual relationships.

Assessment criteria of skills

The seminar will focus on a series of literary texts from the late 18th century, which students will be invited to analyse and discuss.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

It is wished that the student has already mastered the basics of European literary history and the political and cultural history of the early modern age.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

The texts considered in this seminar will focus on the late eighteenth-century issue of the Jewish people emancipation. Some of the most famous essayists and polemicists who intervened in the debate will be read in class, and we will then move on to examine how these same themes were treated in the literary production of wider consumption, in novels, newspapers and theatre.

Bibliografia e materiale didattico

Bibliography

The texts to be analysed will be provided by the lecturer. The critical bibliography will be made known before the beginning of the course.
