Il corso offre agli studenti una panoramica della storia contemporanea italiana ed europea. Durante le lezioni ci soffermeremo sui principali cambiamenti in campo politico, socio-economico e culturale fra la rivoluzione francese del 1789 fino al crollo dell'Unione Sovietica. Fra i temi che saranno affrontati: il Risorgimento, la creazione del Regno d'Italia, la prima guerra mondiale, il fascismo, la seconda guerra mondiale, la nascita della Repubblica Italiana.
This course intends to provide students with the basic knowledge of nineteenth- and twentieth-century modern European and Italian history. During our class meeting, we will pay attention to the political, socio-economic, and cultural changes that developed from the French Revolution in 1789 to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Course topics include, among others, the Risorgimento, the creation of the Italian Kingdom, the Great War, Fascism, the Second World War, the birth and politics of the Italian Republic.

Gli studenti saranno incoraggiati ad analizzare criticamente i testi assegnati, e saranno introdotti alla discussione di questioni metodologiche di grande importanza nel dibattito storiografico.
Students will be encouraged to engage in the critical analysis of the assigned readings and will be introduced to methodological questions that are crucial to the scholarly debate.

Mainly traditional lecture-style, with discussion of the assigned readings.
Attendance: regular attendance is mandatory. Students are allowed no more than two (2) absences without a doctor’s note or an equally acceptable form of justification for the absence.
Students who must miss class due to religious holidays or official university events need to speak to the instructors at the beginning of the semester.
Students are required to participate meaningfully in class discussions and will be graded on participation.
