Conoscenze

Knowledge

At the end of this course students should have a good theoretical and operational knowledge of the following topics: integration theory (in the sense of Lebesgue), L^p and Hilbert spaces, Fourier series and Fourier transform (in L^1 and L^2) and their applications to basic partial differential equations, harmonic functions, integration on d-dimensional surfaces.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

Exam at the end of the course, consisting of a written test and an oral examination.

Skills

At the end of the course students should be able to solve problems related to Fourier series and Fourier transform and their applications to partial differential equations. They should also be able to present in a rigorous and logically correct manner the results and proofs explained in the lectures. Hopefully students should also be able to formulate and solve simple modeling problems.

Assessment criteria of skills

Problems in the written test in the final exam.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

Develop an active approach to proofs and modelization problems.

Modalità di verifica dei comportamenti

Esame orale.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

Oral examination.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

A good knowledge of the basic contents of earlier analysis and geometry courses is mandatory. In particular, we will need the basic notions of linear algebra, topology in metric spaces, derivatives and integrals of functions of several variables (change of variable formula in multiple integrals and Fubini's theorem), convergence for sequences and series of functions, the divergence theorem, holomorphic functions and computation of integrals by the method of resisues.

Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

Lectures and exercise classes. Exercise sheets (that students should solve on their own).

Bibliografia e materiale didattico

  • R. Courant e F. John. Introduction to Calculus and Analysis. Volume 2. Interscience Publishers, John Wiley & Sons, 1974.
  • A.N. Kolmogorov e S.V. Fomin. Introductory real analysis. Dover Publications, New York, 1975. Editori Riuniti, Roma, 2012.
  • T.W. Körner. Fourier analysis. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1988.
  • W. Rudin. Real and Complex Analysis. McGraw-Hill 1974. Traduzione italiana: Analisi reale e complessa, Boringhieri, 1974.
Bibliography

The lectures will not follow any textbook. Some topics of tis course are covered by the following textbooks (note however that the presentation proposed there may significantly differ from the one given in the lectures, while other topics are not treated at all):

  • R. Courant and F. John. Introduction to Calculus and Analysis. Volume 2. Interscience Publishers, John Wiley & Sons, 1974.
  • A.N. Kolmogorov and S.V. Fomin. Introductory real analysis. Dover, New York, 1975.
  • T.W. Körner. Fourier analysis. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1988.
  • W. Rudin. Real and Complex Analysis. McGraw-Hill 1974.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of a written test and an oral examination.

The written test lasts 2-3 hours, and consists of several exercises without using textbooks or notes.

The oral examination focuses mainly on the theoretical aspects of the course.
