Il corso si propone di fornire agli studenti gli strumenti per una comprensione generale del fenomeno letterario nelle culture antiche. Durante le lezioni verranno presentati metodi ermeneutici che, presupponendo a monte la prospettiva dell’indagine storica e filologica, facilitino l’avviamento dello studente antichista a uno studio propriamente letterario dei testi e alla comprensione delle dinamiche storico-culturali che in essi si riflettono.
A seconda del tema del corso monografico, agli studenti verranno presentati problemi relativi al lungo e complesso rapporto che lega le culture letterarie greca e latina. Questioni relative alle forme letterarie e altri problemi di carattere generale verranno affrontati in prospettiva comparata: al termine del corso gli studenti saranno consapevoli non solo del ben noto prestigio dei modelli greci agli occhi degli imitatori romani, ma delle sfaccettate e complesse dinamiche della reciproca influenza nell’ampio arco di tempo che va dal tardo ellenismo alla tarda età imperiale.
The course deals mainly with theoretical issues of literary investigation in the classical cultures. Hermeneutical tools will be provided which should enable students to better recognize the inner structures of literary texts, where a comparative focus can prove particularly productive. A selection of literary texts will be chosen yearly to demonstrate specific ways of cultural exchange as well as the common roots of literary texts in a psycho-anthropological perspective.
Depending on the main topic of the lectures, students attending this course will receive an in-depth presentation of some issues concerning the prolonged and complex relationship between Greek and Latin literary cultures. Genre questions and other general issues will be dealt with in a comparative perspective, so that the students successfully completing this course should be aware not only of the well-known prestige of Greek models for Roman imitators, but of the multifaceted and complex dynamics of mutual influence in the vast time-span from late hellenistic to late imperial period.
La prova finale consisterà in un esame orale, durante il quale lo studente dovrà dimostrare adeguata conoscenza delle lingue classiche (da accertare con una breve traduzione all’impronta di un passo dei testi discussi a lezione e/o dei testi compresi nella lista dei testi letterari specificata oltre) e dei contenuti del corso, riferendo in modo appropriato sugli strumenti teorici considerati e sulle specifiche interpretazioni dei testi letterari analizzati.
During the final (oral) examination, the student will have to demonstrate adequate knowledge of the classical languages (to be verified through the translation of a passage from one of the texts discussed in class and / or of the texts included in the list below). The discussion will also aim at verifying the proper understanding of both the theoretical tools and the literary interpretations presented in class.
Il corso si propone di aiutare gli studenti a sviluppare capacità di analisi del testo in una prospettiva di ermeneutica letteraria, rafforzando in loro al tempo stesso la padronanza espositiva e argomentativa negli ambiti disciplinari coinvolti.
The course’s main goal is to help students develop analytical skills in a hermeneutical perspective. Introducing the foundations of literary criticism will also enhance the students’ expository and argumentative skills in all the relevant fields of study.
Durante la prova finale (su cui si veda anche, sopra, il punto “Modalità di verifica delle conoscenze”) verranno valutate, oltre alle conoscenze richieste, anche le capacità argomentative, la qualità linguistica e la precisione tecnica dell’esposizione.
The final exam (see above: Assessment criteria of knowledge) will assess the students’ knowledge of the topics covered by the course, their expressive and argumentative skills as well as their mastery of the relevant technical language.

Il corso presuppone una conoscenza delle lingue classiche adeguata alla comprensione analitica di testi letterari greci e latini, oltre che l’insieme di competenze storico-letterarie e filologiche acquisite di norma nei corsi di laurea triennale in materie classiche.
È richiesta anche una buona competenza passiva (solo lettura) della lingua inglese.
Opportuna e apprezzata, ma non presupposta, la conoscenza delle lingue tedesca e francese.
The course requires a knowledge of the classical languages adequate to read and understand Greek and Latin literary texts, as well as the set of skills and knowledge normally acquired in the BA programmes in classics.
Good (passive) knowledge of the English language (B2 level at least) is also required.
Advisable and appreciated – though not required – the knowledge of French and German.

Gli studenti interessati a proseguire il loro lavoro di ricerca con il docente, in particolare nella fase di elaborazione della dissertazione magistrale, dovranno concordare una lista di letture preliminari, relative 1. alle conoscenze di teoria e tecnica argomentativa indispensabili al lavoro di ricerca in termini di inventio e dispositio; 2. ai fondamenti teorici e all'inquadramento generale dello specifico tema selezionato.
Students interested in continuing their research work with Prof Grilli, particularly those wishing to have him supervise their MA dissertation, will have to agree on a list of preliminary readings about 1. the theory and practice of argumentation (inventio and dispositio) specifically required by research work; 2. the general framework of the research topic selected.
Il corso sarà tenuto come serie di lezioni cattedratiche su aspetti specifici del tema monografico prescelto. Nonostante la prevalente esposizione cattedratica, la discussione in classe è benvenuta, e anzi vivamente raccomandata.
La frequenza del corso non è obbligatoria, e potrà essere sostituita da un esame su un programma alternativo (si veda oltre). Per gli studenti che decidessero di sostenere l’esame come frequentanti, tuttavia, è richiesta la presenza ad almeno due terzi delle lezioni.
This will be a lecture course on a specific topic; in spite of its structure, discussion in class is welcome and warmly recommended.
Attendance is not mandatory (an alternative syllabus will be available for students unable to attend: see below), but the course completion requires attendance of two thirds of the lectures.
TITOLO DEL CORSO MONOGRAFICO: Spazio e tempo nella commedia antica
Il corso si propone di presentare agli studenti le caratteristiche generali del dramma comico in una prospettiva comparativa. Della cosiddetta ἀρχαία, presa in esame soprattutto a partire dal corpus conservato di Aristofane, si cercherà di mettere in evidenza il profilo peculiare, evidenziandone contrastivamente le trasformazioni nella successiva tradizione ellenistica e romana.
La prospettiva privilegiata dell’indagine sarà fornita quest’anno dall’analisi delle strutture spaziali e temporali: relativamente allo spazio, si cercherà di focalizzare l’attenzione sulle strutture drammaturgiche e performative dei testi, ma anche sulle implicazioni simboliche che lo spazio assume, contribuendo così alla determinazione complessiva del significato del dramma. Il tempo verrà invece considerato non solo come piano su cui viene articolata l’azione drammatica, ma soprattutto come fattore simbolico che concorre in misura sostanziale alla determinazione del significato complessivo dei testi. La dimensione temporale è infatti alla base non solo, come è ovvio, dello svolgimento dell’azione, ma soprattutto della creazione dei personaggi e dei mondi fantastici in cui le loro fisionomie si realizzano. Ecco perché il tema del tempo comico non sarà disgiunto dall’esame di altre questioni fondamentali per la commedia antica, che vanno dall’articolazione di un protagonista ‘eroico’ alla costruzione di mondi fantastici fondati su logiche alternative al principio di realtà.
Verranno studiati pertanto alcuni aspetti della commedia attica di età classica ed ellenistica, cercando di mettere in evidenza le trasformazioni dei significati simbolici legate alle trasformazioni dei fatti formali. Il tema del corso verrà affrontato senza limitarsi alla lettura monografica di un singolo dramma, ma analizzando passi da opere diverse, che verranno confrontati e approfonditi in relazione agli specifici aspetti presi in esame. Accanto ai passi di autori greci (essenzialmente Aristofane e Menandro, insieme ad alcuni frammenti di altri autori conservati dalla tradizione indiretta) verrano presi in esame anche passi della commedia latina, di Plauto (Aulularia e Rudens) e di Terenzio (Eunuchus).
Un calendario presuntivo delle lezioni, con la successione dei temi da affrontare, verrà fornito all’inizio del corso e aggiornato via via durante il semestre.
TITLE OF LECTURE COURSE: Time and space in ancient comedy
The course aims to present students with the general characteristics of comic drama from a comparative perspective. Of the so-called ἀρχαία, examined above all on the basis of Aristophanes’ extant corpus, an attempt will be made to elucidate its peculiar profile, highlighting contrastingly its transformations in Hellenistic and Roman tradition.
The privileged perspective of the investigation will be provided by the analysis of spatial and temporal structures: with regard to space, an attempt will be made to focus on the dramaturgical and performative structures of the texts, but also on the symbolic implications that space takes on, thus contributing to the overall determination of the dramatic meaning. Time will instead be considered not only as the plane on which the dramatic action is articulated, but above all as a symbolic factor that contributes substantially to the determination of the texts’ overall meaning. Indeed, the temporal dimension underlies not only, as is obvious, the unfolding of the action, but above all the creation of the characters and the fantastic worlds in which their physiognomies are realised. This is why the theme of comic time will not be separated from the examination of other issues fundamental to ancient comedy, ranging from the articulation of a ‘heroic’ protagonist to the construction of fantastic worlds based on logics alternative to the reality principle.
Some aspects of Attic comedy of the Classical and Hellenistic periods will therefore be studied, seeking to highlight the transformations of symbolic meanings linked to the transformations of formal facts. The main topic of the course will be approached by analysing passages from different works, which will be explored and compared in relation to the specific issues at hand. Alongside passages from Greek authors (essentially Aristophanes and Menander, together with some fragments from other authors preserved by indirect tradition), passages from Latin comedy will also be examined, in particular from Plautus’ Aulularia and Rudens and Terence’s Eunuchus.
A presumptive timetable of the lectures, with the sequence of topics to be covered, will be provided at the beginning of the course and updated as the semester progresses.
