Lo studente acquisterà conoscenze su costanti e variabili nella diffusione delle opere classiche soprattutto latine nel Medioevo e nel Rinascimento
The student will acquire knowledge about constants and variables in the spread of classical works, especially Latin ones, in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

The student will be able to use the computer and bibliographic tools necessary to reconstruct the history of individual manuscript traditions.

Nozioni elementari di paleografia latina e di filologia classica.
Basic notions of Latin palaeography and classical philology.
Cantieri senza fine: fra le Etymologiae e il Liber glossarum. Fonti, glosse, testi interpolati, contaminazioni.
Negli ultimi anni, si stanno moltiplicando le ricerche sulla composizione di alcune opere di Isidoro (soprattutto le Etymologiae) e sul suo rapporto con il grande glossario enciclopedico noto come Liber glossarum, di cui proprio Isidoro è la fonte di gran lunga principale. Ma il Liber, con molto materiale più antico, sembra talvolta accogliere vere e proprie schede che lo stesso Isidoro potrebbe aver sfruttato o concepito di persona. Il corso, grazie anche al recente censimento digitale dei codici delle Etymologiae fino al Mille (Innovating Knowledge, a cura di Evina Steinová), tratterà i primi secoli della diffusione di quell’opera come testo vivo e soggetto a continue modifiche e aggiunte (a cominciare dai cosiddetti scholia Vallicelliana raccolti ed elaborati da Paolo Diacono). Così, singoli codici o determinati filoni interpolati della tradizione, soprattutto italiani, diventano testimoni di opere rare o rarissime come un opuscolo ortografico, un capitolo e un frammento della grammatica di Carisio, l’Indiculus de haeresibus pseudo-geronimiano, l’anonimo de vitiis et virtutibus orationis, un gruppo di frammenti poetici attribuiti a Petronio. Un caso speciale sarà costituito dal cosiddetto Anonymus Ecksteinii, per la difficoltà di stabilire i suoi rapporti con Isidoro Et. 2.21 e con il Liber glossarum.
Il corso illustrerà costantemente strumenti bibliografici ed informatici per ricerche storiche, prosopografiche e lessicali, utili in particolar modo al reperimento e all'analisi di paralleli per una completa ricostruzione di tradizioni dirette e indirette e di episodi di ricezione medievale e umanistica.
Infinite constructions: between the Etymologiae and the Liber glossarum. Sources, glosses, interpolated texts, contaminations.
In recent years, research has been multiplying on the composition of some of Isidore’s works (especially the Etymologiae) and on its relationship with the great encyclopedic glossary known as Liber glossarum, of which Isidore himself is by far the main source. But the Liber, incorporating much older material, seems sometimes to contain ‘cards’ and ‘tabs’ that Isidore himself could have exploited or personally conceived. The course, thanks also to the recent digital census of the Etymologies manuscripts up to ca. 1000 A.D. (Innovating Knowledge, by Evina Steinová), will deal with the first centuries of the diffusion of that work as a living text, subject to continuous changes and additions (starting with the so-called scholia Vallicelliana collected and developed by Paolo Diacono). Thus, certain individual codices or interpolated strands of tradition, especially Italian ones, become witnesses of rare or very rare works such as an orthographical tract, one chapter and one fragment of the grammar of Charisius, the pseudo-Jerome’s Indiculus de haeresibus, the anonymous de vitiis et virtutibus orationis, a group of poetical fragments attributed to Petronius. A special case will be represented by the so-called Anonymus Ecksteinii, due to the difficulty of establishing its relationships with Isidore, Et. 2.21, and with the Liber glossarum.
The course will constantly illustrate bibliographic and computer tools for historical, prosopographical and lexical research, particularly useful for finding and analyzing parallels in view of a complete reconstruction of direct and indirect traditions and of episodes of medieval reception.
Non è previsto uno specifico testo d’esame. Il materiale necessario sarà fornito o indicato dal docente durante le lezioni o caricato sulle piattaforme al servizio dei corsi. Sarà comunque richiesta un’adeguata capacità d’interpretazione e comprensione di Isidorus Hispalensis, Etymologiae II, ed. P. K. Marshall, Paris, Les Belles Lettres, 1983, con prefazione, testo e relativo apparato critico, in aggiunta a queste letture:
1) L.D. Reynolds-N.G. Wilson, Copisti e filologi, Padova, Antenore, 1987 (3a ed. e successive rist.); chi al punto 2 sceglierà il terzo o il quarto titolo potrà saltare il capitolo sull’Oriente greco.

Chi al punto 2 sceglierà il libro di Paolo Chiesa potrà preparare articoli anche relativi alle tradizioni trattate in quell’opera (Livio, Quintiliano Inst., Catullo, Historia Augusta, Virgilio, Lucrezio, Tacito Historiae e Annales, Plauto, Seneca Epist., Petronio, Lucano, Apuleio Met., Sallustio Iug. e Cat., Eutropio, Festo), ma per un totale di almeno 60 pp.
There is no specific examination text. Necessary material will be provided or indicated by the teacher during the lessons. In any case, an adequate capacity of interpretation and understanding of the preface and text, with relative critical apparatus, of Isidorus Hispalensis, Etymologiae II, ed. P. K. Marshall, Paris, Les Belles Lettres, 1983, will be required, in addition to these readings:

Reynolds, Oxford 1983 (repr. 1986), for a total of at least 30 pp., to be independently chosen, or to be established in agreement with the teacher together with any other specific title (especially for non-attending students). See under "Bibliography (and teaching material)": in any case, the presentation of a report on a given subject and on readings to be agreed with the teacher will be required.
L'esame si svolgerà come prova finale orale (colloquio con il docente). S'intenderà che la prova non è superata se il candidato non saprà esprimersi adeguatamente, se non conoscerà la terminologia filologica e se dimostrerà di non sapersi orientare nell'interpretazione dell'apparato di un'edizione critica.
All'inizio dell'esame si chiederà di leggere un passo dell'edizione consigliata del testo latino, di tradurlo e di analizzare il significato e il valore degli errori e delle varianti registrate in apparato in rapporto alle conoscenze acquisite sulla tradizione dell'opera. Poi il candidato dovrà rispondere a domande precise sui tre punti indicati nella sezione sulla bibliografia.
The examination will take place as an oral final test (interview with the teacher). It is understood that the test is not passed if the candidate does not know how to express himself properly, if he does not know the philological terminology and if he proves that he cannot orient himself in the interpretation of the apparatus of a critical edition.
At the beginning of the exam, students will be asked to read a passage from the recommended edition of the Latin text, to translate it and to analyze the meaning and value of the errors and variants recorded in the apparatus, in relation to the notions acquired about the tradition of the work. Then the candidate will have to answer specific questions on the three points listed in the bibliographical section.
