Conoscenze

Al termine del corso lo studente 

a) avrà una conoscenza globale della struttura grammaticale del sanscrito così come dei principali strumenti e delle metodologie per muoversi all’interno dei testi
b) avrà una prima conoscenza di parte della letteratura che in sanscrito si esprime (con particolare riguardo alle fasi più antiche) inserita nel suo specifico contesto religioso e culturale.

Knowledge

At the end of the course the student

a) will have a global understanding of the grammatical structure of Vedic Sanskrit as well as the main tools and methodologies to deal with the texts

b) will have a preliminary knowledge of part of the literature in Sanskrit (with special regard to its most ancient phases) including its specific religious and cultural context.

Capacità

Lo studente sarà in grado di leggere un testo devanagarico e di tradurre brevi e semplici brani. Saprà analizzare in maniera linguisticamente precisa i testi più complessi svolti in classe.
Saprà usare i vari strumenti d’analisi (lessici, grammatiche di riferimento, siti specializzati) presentati a lezione

Skills

The student will be able to read a text in Devanagari and to translate short and simple passages. S/he will be able to analyze linguistically the most complex Vedic texts read in class.

S/he will be able to use the various analysis tools (dictionaries, reference grammars, specialized websites) presented in class

Modalità di verifica delle capacità

La verifica delle acquisite competenze linguistiche può essere sostituita dalla partecipazione (con esito positivo) a due verifiche scritte in itinere.

Assessment criteria of skills

The assessment of the acquired linguistic skills during the final exam may be substituted by two written in-progress tests.

Saprà muoversi in un testo sanscrito usando le giuste strategie per risolvere le difficoltà

the student will be able to move through a Sanskrit text using the right strategies to solve difficulties

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Nessun prerequisito in senso stretto viene richiesto, ma la conoscenza di qualche lingua classica e / o qualche conoscenza di linguistica sono indubbiamente di aiuto

Si suggeriscono alcune letture / attività preliminari per chi volesse prepararsi un po' in anticipo (NON sono testi di esame)

Milizia, Paolo, 2002, Le lingue indoeuropee, Roma: Carocci (in particolare le pg. 7-14; 24-39 e 48-60)

Un buono strumento per acquisire la terminologia è Beccaria, Cesare, Dizionario di linguistica, Torino: Einuadi.

Infine, per chi vuole familiarizzarsi con l'alfabeto (che verrà poi spiegato in classe) si consiglia il sito:

No prerequisites in the strict sense of the word are required, but some knowledge of some classical language and/or linguistics are certainly helpful.
We suggest some preliminary readings/activities for those who want to prepare a bit in advance (these are NOT exam texts)

Il corso sviluppa ottime sinergie con una serie di insegnamenti sia di Civiltà e Forme del sapere  sia di FILELI, in particolare a) di Iranistica b) di linguistica (Glottologia, Filologia Classica, Linguistica Generale, Linguistica Ittita c) letteratura ed epigrafia (Greca e Latina) d) storia delle religioni

Co-requisites

The course develops excellent synergies with a number of disciplines from both Civilisations and Forms of Knowledge and Filologia, Letteratura e Linguistica departments, in particular a) Iranistics b) linguistics (Glottology, Classical Philology, General Linguistics, Hittite Linguistics c) literature and epigraphy (Greek and Latin) d) history of religions

Si consiglia di seguire sia il corso di Culture and History of Ancient India sia il corso di Sanscrito 2, i corsi afferenti all'area iranica e corsi di glottologia e linguistica

We recommend taking both Culture and History of Ancient India and Sanskrit 2, courses related to the Iranian area and courses in glottology and linguistics

Indicazioni metodologiche

La frequenza è cruciale per il buon andamento dello studio. Se si prevede di avere difficoltà ad assicurare una buona frequenza si prega di contattare la docente in modo da mettere in atto delle strategie compensative

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)
  • Elementi di storia della letteratura e della lingua vedica (si rimanda al registro delle lezioni per la definizione più precisa). Questa parte viene integrata dallo studio personale di due testi come indicato in bibliografia
  • Basi della grammatica dell'antico indiano. Testo di supporto: Aklujkar 2012 (vedi bibliografia)
  • Lettura con commento culturale e linguistico di testi sanscriti. Questa parte è svolta con taglio seminariale che varia ogni anno. Anno 2022-23 : mise en abîme: il Mahābhārata e la rappresentazione della sua propria composizione

Syllabus
  • Elements of the history of culture and of the Vedic language (please refer to the register of lessons for a more precise definition). This part is integrated by the personal study of two texts as indicated in the bibliography.
  • Basics of ancient Indian grammar. Support text: Aklujkar 2012 (see bibliography)
  • Reading of Sanskrit texts with cultural and linguistic commentary. This part is carried out in a seminar perspective that changes every year. Year 2022-23 : mise en abîme: the Mahābhārata and the representation of its own composition
