Indicazioni metodologiche

Il corso si dividerà in tre parti:

Teaching methods

The course will be divided into three parts:
1. Introductory part: we will focus on the birth of the philosophy of mind as an autonomous discipline, by discussing the meaning of the notion of mind and on the peculiar features of this field of study through the introduction of some fundamental paradigms that have marked the history of the philosophy of mind in the 20th century

2. Analytical part: extended reading of G. Ryle's The Concept of Mind (1949), by considering the revisions of some of its theses contained in the essays collected in On Thinking (1979).

3. Comparative part: we will consider some criticisms of Ryle's theses and developments of his conception proposed by some relevant representatives of the 20th-century philosophy of mind

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

Gilbert Ryle's concept of mind: potentialities, criticism, and development

The aim of the course is to introduce the philosophy of mind by reading Ryle's 1949 essay, The Concept of Mind, and considering the revisions to which the author subjected some of his theses in later essays, as well as criticisms and revivals of his perspective and legacy in some of the most relevant representatives of the 20th-century philosophy of mind (Sellars, Clark and Dennett). We will focus on the relationship between mind, body and environment, and the distinction between knowing that and knowing how; we will see how the image of Descartes as a theorist of the ‘ghost in the machine’ arose; we will deal with the relationship between thought and action, and between thought and language; finally, we will investigate Ryle's theses on emotions, imagination and self-knowledge.
