Learning outcomes
Conoscenze

Al termine del corso lo studente avrà acquisito:

  • specifiche conoscenze relative alla produzione letteraria inglese dei periodi in programma d’esame, raggiunta attraverso lo studio di alcuni testi poetici, drammatici e in prosa;
  • una buona conoscenza del contesto storico-culturale;
  • gli strumenti teorico-metodologici fondamentali per lo studio dei testi narrativi, poetici e drammatici.

Lo studente avrà inoltre acquisito autonomamente una buona conoscenza della storia letteraria inglese del periodo di riferimento, e saprà identificare i diversi paradigmi letterari, contestualizzare gli autori e seguire l'evoluzione di ciascun genere.
Knowledge

The students who successfully complete the course will have achieved:

  • specific knowledge of early modern English literature through the study of a number of poetic, prose and dramatic texts. 
  • general knowledge of  English literary history from its origins to the Restoration (included). They will also be able to contextualize the main features of literary genres, modes and conventions.
  • awareness of the methodological tools necessary for the study of poetic, fictional and dramatic texts.
Modalità di verifica delle conoscenze

Dal momento che si prevedono momenti di discussione collettiva, allo studente è richiesto di leggere preliminarmente i testi che saranno affrontati durante le lezioni. Le conoscenze storico-culturali e letterarie acquisite nell’ambito del corso saranno valutate tramite un colloquio orale durante il quale lo studente dovrà dimostrare:

  • di conoscere gli argomenti trattati durante il corso;
  • di essere in grado di identificare le caratteristiche fondamentali dei paradigmi letterari delle diverse epoche e quelle specifiche dei vari autori, collocandoli opportunamente all’interno del sistema storico-culturale di appartenenza;
  • di aver letto i testi in lingua originale.
Assessment criteria of knowledge

The students will be assessed on their capacity to discuss course contents using an appropriate terminology. During the oral exam, the students are expected to demonstrate their knowledge of the history of English Literature from its origins to the Restoration (included), their ability to identify the main features of literary genres, modes and conventions, and their possession of the basic tools for the exploration of poetical, prose and dramatic texts. They should also be able to look at literature in its relationship with its historical and social context and with the history of thought.
Capacità

Al termine del corso lo studente saprà:

  • comunicare in un linguaggio e un registro appropriati i contenuti relativi agli argomenti letterari del corso;
  • condurre in modo autonomo lo studio della storia letteraria e contestualizzarne le opere fondamentali;
  • leggere e comprendere alcune opere in lingua inglese del periodo storico-letterario di riferimento.
Skills

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • discuss literary topics in suitable language and register;
  • study literary history and contextualize major works;
  • read (in English) and understand the texts which are the object of the course.
Modalità di verifica delle capacità

Allo studente verrà anche chiesta la collaborazione attiva alle lezioni. L’esame prevede un colloquio orale. Il colloquio d'esame si svolgerà in italiano, ma tutti i testi oggetto del corso e alcuni materiali critici in bibliografia dovranno essere studiati in inglese. 
Assessment criteria of skills

The final oral exam will assess the students' capacity to organize and coherently formulate a discussion on literary topics. In addition, it will test the degree of autonomy in individual study, as well as the capacity to contextualize literary texts within their historical and cultural background, and to read and understand them.

Tramite la frequenza delle lezioni e/o lo studio in autonomia gli studenti potranno:

  • sviluppare la propria consapevolezza riguardo alle problematiche connesse con lo studio della storia letteraria, dei testi e della bibliografia critica;
  • acquisire accuratezza e precisione nello svolgimento delle attività connesse con il suddetto studio;
  • affinare capacità e sensibilità riguardo a questioni legate all'uso e al riconoscimento delle fonti critiche.

Modalità di verifica dei comportamenti

L’esame orale finale verificherà il grado di consapevolezza raggiunto dallo studente riguardo alle problematiche connesse con lo studio della storia letteraria e dei contenuti del corso (testi e bibliografia critica). Inoltre, permetterà di valutare l’accuratezza e la precisione raggiunte nello studio e di sondare la capacità acquisita di utilizzare le fonti critiche.
Assessment criteria of behaviors

The final oral exam will assess the degree of awareness students have developed in the study of literary history, of texts and of critical material. Moreover, it twill also test the accuracy and precision in performing activities related to their study, as well as their awarenes of relevant issues in criticism. 
Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Per seguire proficuamente il corso è necessario che gli studenti possiedano una buona conoscenza della lingua inglese. Per questo motivo, è consigliabile che abbiano superato l’esame di Lingua inglese, previsto dal Piano di Studi per il primo anno. 
Prerequisites

The students are expected to have a good knowledge of English and to have passed the English Language exam.
Indicazioni metodologiche

L'attività didattica si svolgerà attraverso lezioni frontali, con l'ausilio di slides e filmati. Le lezioni si terranno in italiano, ma agli studenti è richiesta una buona comprensione dell’inglese perché i testi oggetto del corso, tutti in lingua inglese, saranno analizzati, ma non tradotti, a lezione.

Agli studenti verrà richiesto di scaricare materiali didattici dal sito di e-learning del corso (la piattaforma Moodle). Moodle verrà altresì usato per comunicazioni docente-studenti.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

54 ore frontali (9 CFU), secondo semestre.

Titolo del corso: “Il volto ambiguo dell’Italia nella letteratura inglese del Cinquecento”

Argomento del corso: Dopo un’introduzione al contesto storico-culturale del periodo early modern, verranno esaminati vari testi poetici, drammatici e in prosa, in cui verrà anche messo in luce l’atteggiamento ambivalente verso l’Italia, gli italiani e l’italianità che caratterizzò l’Inghilterra dell’epoca Tudor. Se da un lato l’Italia era considerata un modello imprescindibile di cultura, non solo letteraria, dall’altra era guardata con sospetto e considerata terra di lussuria, complotti, omicidi e veleni.

Lo studente dovrà studiare autonomamente la storia letteraria inglese dalle origini alla Restaurazione compresa (fino al 1700). All’interno di questo orizzonte cronologico, dovrà saper identificare le caratteristiche fondamentali dei paradigmi culturali e letterari delle varie epoche, generi e movimenti, nonché le poetiche e le opere più significative dei vari autori, che dovranno essere collocati opportunamente all’interno del sistema storico-culturale a cui appartengono. A tale scopo è obbligatorio lo studio approfondito del Manuale.

Tutti i testi primari dovranno essere letti in lingua originale. Verrà inoltre verificata la conoscenza del manuale e dei testi secondari in bibliografia. TUTTI i testi in programma sono reperibili in biblioteca, tramite accesso online o in formato cartaceo (presso la Biblioteca d’Anglistica).

Title of the course: “The ambiguous face of Italy in English sixteenth-century literature”

Contents of the course: After a few theoretical and methodological hints and an introduction to the historical and cultural context of the early modern period, various poetic, dramatic and prose texts will be examined. A particular emphasis will be placed on the ambivalent attitude towards Italy, the Italians and Italianness that was proper to Tudor England. If, on the one hand, Italy was considered a crucial model of culture (literary and not only), on the other hand, it was regarded with suspicion and considered the land o lasciviousness, complots, murder and poisons.

Modalità d'esame

L’esame prevede un colloquio orale, che si svolgerà in italiano. Tuttavia, dal momento che è richiesta la lettura dei testi primari in lingua originale, agli studenti potrà essere chiesto di tradurre un breve estratto da questi. Chi lo desideri potrà scegliere di sostenere una parte più ampia o anche la totalità del colloquio in inglese.

In sede d'esame, verrà verificata anche la conoscenza del manuale e dei testi secondari in bibliografia.
