Al termine del corso, gli studenti saranno in grado di contestualizzare i principali autori italiani nell'ambito della storia letteraria italiana ed europea. Saranno inoltre in grado di analizzare testi e generi letterari usando concetti e termini appropriati.
By the end of this course students will be able to contextualize the main Italian authors within the European literary tradition, from the Middle Ages to the Early Modern centuries, and they will be able to use key concepts and terms to analyze literary texts.
Le conoscenze acquisite dagli studenti verranno verificate attraverso discussioni in classe sui testi e i temi in programma e attraverso un esame orale.
Students will be assessed based on their active in-class participation and on a final oral exam.
The final exam will consist in an oral discussion of the topics addressed during the classes. Students may be required to analyze some of the texts we discussed in class.
Grading guidelines:
Active in-class participation: 35%
Final exam: 65 %

Classes will combine lectures and collective discussions of texts and topics .
- Class participation: Students are expected to actively read all assigned readings before each lesson, and to contribute meaningfully to classroom discussions. While attendance is necessary in order to obtain a good class grade, your presence alone does not constitute participation.
Italian Literature I è un corso introduttivo alla letteratura italiana medievale e moderna. Gli studenti conosceranno e leggeranno testi di Dante, Petrarca, Boccaccio, Ariosto, Machiavelli, per citare solo alcuni degli autori di riferimento della tradizione italiana ed europea. Il corso sarà inoltre l'occasione per riflettere sull'evoluzione della lingua italiana e sul paradosso di una letteratura che si vuole nazionale ma che si è sviluppata in un contesto frammentario e regionale.
This course is designed as a broad introduction to the Italian literature and culture from its origins through the early modern age. We will read texts by Dante, Petrarca, Boccaccio, Ariosto, Tasso, and Machiavelli, to name only a few authors whose influence was crucial not only for the Italian letters, but for the definition of the Western culture overall. At the same time, this course will also trace the origins and development of Italian language, from its Latin roots throughout its social and literary evolution in poetry, novels, political and scientific essays. By combining close reading with a larger historical approach, we will explore the fascinating paradox of Italian literature: that is, an apparently national literature which developed in a fragmentary, regional, not-yet-national environment.

Attendance of at least 80% of the classes is required.
L'esame finale consisterà in una discussione orale su temi, autori e testi in paorgramma.
Students will be assessed based on their participation (35%) and on a final oral exam in which they will have to demonstrate their knowledge and comprehension of the topics covered in class (65%).
