Alla fine del corso lo studente avrà acquisito una piena conoscenza:
- del genere della short story e il suo sviluppo nei secoli, da inizio Ottocento fino al secondo Novecento;
- delle metodologie di analisi del testo narrativo;
- del contesto culturale e letterario da inizio Ottocento al tardo Novecento;
- del dibattito teorico in ambito letterario e culturale dall'inizio del ventesimo secolo al presente.
At the end of the course the student will possess a thorough knowledge of:
- the genre of the short story and its development through the centuries, from the early 19th century to the late 20th century;
- the methodologies of analysis of narrative texts;
- the cultural and literary context from the early 19th to the late 20th century;
- the cultural and literary theoretical debate from the early 20th century to the present.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
Le conoscenze acquisite saranno verificate attraverso:
- una presentazione orale in classe e un saggio scritto che attesteranno il raggiungimento di approfondite conoscenze del genere della short story e del suo sviluppo nei secoli XIX e XX;
- un esame orale finale in cui gli studenti dovranno dimostrare una buona conoscenza delle teorie critiche in ambito letterario e culturale; dovranno anche saper illustrare e analizzare una serie di opere primarie appartenenti a generi e periodi diversi della letteratura inglese e discutere le letture secondarie basate su vari approcci critici.
Acquired knowledge will be assessed through:
- an oral report in class and a written paper which will verify the acquisition of specific knowledge and understanding of the short story genre from the early 19th century to the late 20th,;
a final oral exam in which students will have to demonstrate a good knowledge of cultural and literary theories; they will also be expected to illustrate and analyse primary sources belonging to various genres and periods of English literature and to discuss secondary sources providing different critical approaches.
Alla fine del corso gli studenti saranno in grado di:
- applicare strumenti teorico-metodologici avanzati all'analisi del testo narrativo;
- leggere, analizzare e discutere oralmente saggi critici o teorici riguardanti questioni letterarie e culturali variamente connesse con i temi centrali del corso;
- contestualizzare testi narrativi all'interno del background culturale e letterario tra gli inizi dell’Ottocento e la fine del Novecento;
- progettare e scrivere un testo argomentativo in inglese su uno degli argomenti del corso;
- raccogliere e interpretare dati;
- comunicare oralmente e per iscritto le loro conclusioni, e la conoscenza e il razionale che le supportano, in modo chiaro e non ambiguo;
- commentare vari aspetti del testo letterario;
- illustrare e descrivere argomenti letterari e culturali.
At the end of the course students will be able to:
- apply advanced methodological and theoretical tools to the analysis of narrative texts, in particular the short story;
- read, analyse and report orally on critical or theoretical essays concerning literary and cultural issues variously connected with the central topics of the course;
- contextualise narrative texts, namely short stories, within the cultural and literary background from the early 19th to the late 20th century;
- plan and write an argumentative essay in English on one of the topics of the course;
- gather and interpret relevant data;
- communicate, both orally and in written form, their conclusions, and the knowledge and rationale underpinning them, in a clear and unambiguous way;
- comment on various aspects of literary texts;
- illustrate and discuss literary and cultural topics.
Agli studenti sarà richiesto di preparare una presentazione orale in inglese basata su un saggio critico concernente uno degli argomenti del corso.
Dovranno anche scrivere un saggio in inglese (tra le 2500 e le 3000 parole) discutendo uno degli argomenti del corso.
L'esame orale finale verificherà la capacità di commentare vari aspetti del testo letterario, di usare strumenti appropriati al fine di indagare specifiche questioni testuali e di illustrare e discutere argomenti letterari e culturali.
Students will be required to prepare an oral report in English based on a critical essay dealing with one of the topics of the course.
Students will also be asked to write a paper in English (2500 to 3000 words) discussing one of the course topics.
The final oral exam will test the students' capacity to comment on various aspects of literary texts, to use appropriate tools to deal with specific textual questions, as well as to illustrate and discuss literary and cultural topics.
Il corso intende preparare gli studenti ad affrontare prove orali e scritte, a discutere e negoziare significati, a supportare o controbattere posizioni critiche.
Gli studenti dovranno anche dimostrare di sapere usare consapevolmente e in maniera trasparente i dati (bibliografia e materiale online).
The course aims at preparing students to be able to manage both oral and written work, to discuss and negotiate meanings, to support and/or disclaim critical positions.
They will also be expected to handle data (bibliography and online materials) in a transparent, responsible way.
La capacità di comunicare, negoziare e discutere significati sarà verificata durante la presentazione orale, momento in cui si testerà anche quella di supportare o controbattere una certa posizione critica.
Il saggio scritto verificherà la maturità nell'uso dei dati in modo responsabile e trasparente.
The students' communicative skills, as well as their capacity to negotiate and discuss meanings, will be tested during the oral report, which will also show their skill in supporting or disclaiming a critical position.
The maturity in handling data in a responsible way will be mainly tested through the written paper.
Il livello di conoscenza della lingua inglese dovrà essere adeguato per permettere di seguire le lezioni, fare una presentazione orale e scrivere un saggio accademico.
Si richiede anche una conoscenza approfondita della letteratura inglese dalle origini al contemporaneo.
Students are expected to possess an adequate level of English to be able to follow lectures, discuss literary topics, make an oral presentation, and write an essay in English.
Students are also expected to already possess a sound knowledge of English literary history from its origins to the present.

MODULO A: A Struggle with Marginality: Reading the Short Story in English.
Il corso è inteso come introduzione allo studio della short story come forma narrativa. Nella prima parte si studieranno i principali approcci teorici al genere del racconto per fornire un solido background su cui innestare l’analisi dei testi.
Nella seconda parte, si studieranno alcuni esempi significativi di short story al fine di illustrare l’ampia fenomenologia e per fornire agli studenti gli strumenti fondamentali di analisi del testo narrativo.
MODULO B
Il Modulo B consiste in una lista di letture da contestualizzare nel panorama della storia culturale e letteraria inglese.
This course consists of two different modules:
Module A: 54 class hours: A Struggle with Marginality: Reading the Short Story in English.
Module B independent work: list of primary and secondary sources
MODULE A: A Struggle with Marginality: Reading the Short Story in English.
The course intends to provide an introduction to the short story as a narrative form. In the first part, attention will be devoted to short story theories in order to provide a solid background for the study of the genre. In the second part, some sample texts will be studied in order to illustrate the variety and rich phenomenology of short story writing from the early 19th to the late 20th century, as well as to provide students with advanced narratological tools for the analysis of narrative texts.

Module B consists of a list of readings to be contextualized within the panorama of English Literary and Cultural History.

Modulo A: Agli studenti si richiede di prendere parte attiva alle attività in classe. Ciascuno preparerà una presentazione orale in inglese basata su un saggio critico incentrato su uno degli argomenti del corso. Scriverà, inoltre, un saggio in lingua (massimo 3000 parole) su un diverso argomento di sua scelta. La scadenza per la sottomissione del saggio scritto è almeno dieci giorni prima della data dell’esame orale finale.
Gli argomenti del modulo A saranno pertanto verificati attraverso la valutazione della presentazione orale (1/3 del totale) e del saggio scritto (1/3 del totale).
Il Modulo B sarà valutato attraverso un esame orale, sempre in inglese (1/3 della valutazione totale). Durante il colloquio gli studenti dovranno discutere i testi primari dimostrando di saperli analizzare dal punto di vista stilistico, tematico e linguistico, e di saperli contestualizzare all’interno del periodo a cui appartengono.
Gli studenti che sostengono l’esame per la prima volta devono anche saper delineare e discutere in termini generali lo sviluppo delle teorie in ambito letterario e culturale, dallo Strutturalismo e il Poststrutturalismo fino alle correnti più recenti.
Gli studenti devono anche dimostrare un’approfondita conoscenza della storia letteraria inglese dalle origini alla contemporaneità.
Module A: Students are expected to take active part in classroom activities and will be required to prepare an oral report based on a critical essay dealing with one of the course topics.
They will then be asked to write a paper (2500 to 3000 words) about a different topic of their choice. The deadline for the submission of the written paper is at least ten days before the date of the oral exam.
Therefore, Module A will be assessed through an evaluation of the oral presentation (1/3) and of the written paper (1/3).
Module B will be assessed by an oral examination in English (1/3), during which students are expected to discuss the primary sources by analyzing them from a stylistic, thematic and linguistic point of view, as well as by contextualizing them within their literary period.
Students who take the exam for the first time are also expected to be able to delineate and discuss in general terms the development of literary and cultural theory from Structuralism to Post-structuralism and the most recent trends.
It is also expected that students will have a thorough knowledge of English Literary History from the beginnings to the contemporary.
