Scopo principale del corso del primo anno è fornire un inquadramento della lingua inglese dal punto di vista morfologico (studio dei processi flessivi, derivazionali e per la creazione di parole nuove), sintattico a livello di sintagma (studio delle parti del discorso, nome, verbo, aggettivo, ecc.), semantico (relazioni di senso quali sinonimia, antonimia, iponimia/iperonimia, meronimia, ecc.), fonetico-fonologico e storico. Si affronta infine una riflessione sul ruolo dell’inglese come lingua della comunicazione internazionale e sulla variazione d'uso dal punto di vista geografico e sociale (sociolinguistica).
Il corso prevede il raggiungimento del livello B2 del Quadro Comune Europeo di conoscenza della lingua. A questo fine, lo studente potrà seguire i corsi di lingua strumentale organizzati dal CLI per il corso di studi LIN.
The main purpose of the first year course is to provide a framework for the study of the English language from the perspectives of morphology (inflection, word formation processes for the creation of new words), syntax (phrase structure – focus on word classes or parts of speech like nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.), semantics (sense relations such as synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy/hyperonymy, meronymy, etc.), phonetics and phonology and history of the language. The course will be rounded off with a reflection on the role of English as the language of international communication and the variation in use from a geographical and social points of view (sociolinguistics).
The course presupposes the achievement of the level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference of languages. To this end, the student may attend the language classes organised by the Linguistic Centre for the LIN degree programme.
Per il corso si accerterà la preparazione con un esame scritto articolato in quesiti a risposta multipla su Moodle e, previo superamento di questo, seguirà una prova orale con domande soprattutto sui moduli di storia della lingua e sociolinguistica, ma potranno essere toccati anche gli altri argomenti del corso.
The knowledge of the course contents will be evaluated by means of a written exam on Moodle with closed-ended questions and a subsequent oral exam mainly focused on the history of the language and sociolinguistic modules, although other course topics may be involved, too.

Ability of analysing phonemes, morphemes, parts of speech, phrases and lexical relations; ability of distinguishing the most important time divisions in the history of the English language, and among the main varieties of English. The linguistic competence must be that of the B2 level of the CEFR in all skills.

Il raggiungimento del livello di competenza strumentale B2 e l'acquisizione delle conoscenze e capacità previsti per questo corso permetteranno allo studente di analizzare e riflettere, con un approccio scientifico descrittivo, su strutture linguistiche di vario grado di complessità attraverso l’uso di terminologia specialistica pertinente. La combinazione di tali conoscenze e competenze fornirà le basi necessarie per le successive annualità della disciplina all’interno del Corso di Laurea.
The achievement of the proficiency level B2 and the acquisition of the knowledge and skills required for this course will allow the student to analyse and reflect, with a scientific descriptive approach, on linguistic structures of various degrees of complexity through the use of relevant specialist terminology. The combination of these knowledge and skills will provide the necessary foundations for the subsequent years of study of the discipline within the degree programme.

An Introduction to English Linguistics

Argomento: Gli argomenti trattati riguardano l’inquadramento della lingua inglese dal punto di vista morfologico (studio dei processi flessivi, derivazionali e per la creazione di parole nuove), sintattico a livello di sintagma (studio delle parti del discorso, nome, verbo, aggettivo, ecc.), semantico (relazioni di senso quali sinonimia, antonimia, iponimia/iperonimia, meronimia, ecc.), fonetico-fonologico e storico. Si affronta infine una riflessione sul ruolo dell’inglese come lingua della comunicazione internazionale e sulla variazione d'uso dal punto di vista geografico e sociale.
Per il raggiungimento del livello di competenza linguistica saranno svolte esercitazioni scritte e orali, svolte da Collaboratori ed Esperti Linguistici (CEL), per due semestri, che mirano a potenziare tutte e quattro le abilità.
Lingua Inglese I is a course destined for students of all curricula. It consists of an introduction to the study of the English language (first semester).
An Introduction to English Linguistics - Prof. Masi (A-L, modules on morphology and syntax); Prof. Regnoli (M-Z, modules on morphology and syntax), followed by Prof. Masi (all students, modules on lexical semantics, history of the language, phonetics and phonology), and then by Prof. Regnoli (module on sociolinguistics).
Content: The topics covered provide a framework for the study of the English language from the perspectives of morphology (inflection, word formation processes for the creation of new words), syntax (phrase structure – focus on word classes or parts of speech like nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.), semantics (sense relations such as synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy/hyperonymy, meronymy, etc.), phonetics and phonology and history of the language. The course will be rounded off with a reflection on the role of English as the language of international communication and the variation in use from a geographical and social points of view.
To achieve the relevant level of linguistic competence, written and oral language classes with Language Experts (CEL) will take place for two semesters, which aim to enhance all four skills.

Per verbalizzare l’esame è necessario superare uno scritto e un successivo orale relativi al corso teorico con le docenti, e dimostrare di possedere il livello di competenza strumentale B2 o attraverso il Placement Test iniziale o attraverso il superamento delle prove relative alle esercitazioni linguistiche (prove di lettorato).
Esame teorico con le docenti: L’esame scritto su Moodle consiste prevalentemente in risposte chiuse sui moduli di morfologia, sintassi, lessico, fonetica-fonologia. L’orale, per chi supera lo scritto, si basa su quesiti soprattutto sui moduli di sociolinguistica e storia della lingua, ma potenzialmente su tutto il programma. L'esame scritto potrà essere sostenuto in gennaio o febbraio anche prima di aver superato le prove relative alle esercitazioni del lettorato, ma per la parte orale dell’esame docente, si raccomanda di attendere il raggiungimento del livello richiesto in uscita (B2), al fine di concludere la parte teorica dell’esame con un livello di competenza adeguato.
Chi supera lo scritto su Moodle e viene valutato negativamente all’orale dovrà ripetere anche lo scritto. Scritto e orale potranno anche essere sostenuti in appelli diversi ma entro un anno, sarà inoltre necessario specificare la data di superamento dello scritto nelle note al momento dell’iscrizione all’esame orale. Il voto dell’esame docente (scritto + orale), in attesa del raggiungimento del livello strumentale (lettorato), rimarrà valido per un massimo di DUE anni. Le verbalizzazioni dell’esame andranno richieste, a partire da giugno, attraverso email alle docenti e potranno avvenire durante i ricevimenti tenuti entro trenta giorni dalla data dell’appello d'esame.
Verifica del possesso del livello di competenza linguistica (B2): si articolerà su tutte e 4 le abilità. Il possesso del livello B2 è valutato in termini di A, B, e C. Il livello C consiste nel raggiungimento delle abilità minime previste dal CEFR per il livello (es. A = solido B2 in tutte le abilità e magari in alcune B2+; B = solido B2 su tutte le abilità; C = B2 con qualche debolezza specifica, per es. in una delle quattro abilità).
Tutti gli studenti, anche coloro in possesso di Certificazione Linguistica internazionale, ad es. FCE (ottenuta da non più di due anni) dovranno sostenere un Placement Test all’inizio del semestre in modo da identificare il gruppo di lavoro per le esercitazioni in base al proprio livello di competenza. In caso di discrepanza tra esito della Certificazione e esito del Placement Test, varrà quest’ultimo.
Le prove relative alle esercitazioni del lettorato devono essere superate tutte in un solito appello, ovvero, nel caso una sola prova non venga superata, dovranno essere sostenute di nuovo anche le altre. Gli studenti frequentanti i corsi delle esercitazioni potranno sostenere prove in itinere durante l’anno. La validità dell’esito positivo nelle prove di livello è DUE anni.
In order to have your final mark recorded, you’ll have to sit a written exam followed by an oral exam with the lecturers, and also demonstrate you possess a proficiency level B2 either by means of the Placement Test at the beginning of the year, or by taking the tests during or at the end of the practical language classes (lettorato tests).
Exam with lecturers: The written exam on Moodle consists of closed answers on the modules of morphology, lexicon, syntax, phonetics and phonology. The oral exam, after passing the written exam, is based on questions especially on the sociolinguistics module and history of the language, but potentially on the whole programme. You can take the written exam related to the lecturers’ course in January/February before passing the lettorato tests, but we recommend that you take the oral exam when you have achieved the required level (B2), so as to complete the theoretical part of the exam with adequate linguistic proficiency.
If you pass the written test on Moodle and are evaluated negatively in the oral, you must also resit the written exam. Written and oral exams can be taken in different exam sessions but within the same year; also, you will have to specify the dates when you passed the written exam in the notes when signing up for the oral exam. The result of the examination with the lecturers (written + oral) is valid for TWO years. The recording of exam marks must be requested, from June onwards, via emails sent to the lecturers. Marks can be recorded during the lecturers’ office hours, within thirty days from the date of the exam.
Assessment of the proficiency level (B2): Assessment will be based on all 4 skills and will take place at the end of second semester, at the end of May/beginning of June. Possession of the level B2 is assessed in terms of A, B, and C. Level C consists in achieving the minimum CEFR skills for level (e.g. A = a solid B2 in all skills and maybe some B2+; B = a solid B2 on all skills; C = a B2 with some specific weakness, e.g. in one of the four skills).
Even if you possess an International Certificate such as FCE (not older than two years), you will have to sit a Placement Test at the beginning of the first semester, which has the goal of identifying the lettorato group suitable for you depending on your proficiency level. In case of differences between the grade of the Certificate and that of the Placement test, the latter will be considered as valid. All the lettorato tests for the different skills must be passed together, i.e., if one of them is failed, all of them have to be taken once again.
Attending students may choose to sit ongoing tests through the year. The validity of a successful outcome in the language tests is TWO years.

Il corso docente sarà nel primo semestre e inizierà il 25 settembre ore 14:15 (gruppo A in B2, gruppo B in R2).
Le prime tre settimane il corso sarà suddiviso in due gruppi: prof.ssa Masi per gli studenti i cui cognomi iniziano con le lettere A-L, gruppo A; prof.ssa Regnoli per gli studenti M-Z, gruppo B. Le tre settimane successive, tutti gli studenti seguiranno le lezioni della prof.ssa Masi; le ultime tre settimane, tutti gli studenti seguiranno le lezioni della prof.ssa Regnoli.
Le esercitazioni linguistiche (lettorato) si svolgeranno in entrambi i semestri. Tutti gli studenti dovranno svolgere il Placement Test (28 settembre e 3 ottobre parti scritte; 29 settembre, 5 e 6 ottobre orali) per l'individuazione del gruppo di lettorato più adatto. The course with the Lecturers will take place in the first semester. It will be subdivided into two groups of students for the first 3 weeks: Prof. Masi’s group (A-L) and Prof. Regnoli’s group (M-Z); subsequent classes will be addressed to all students together with Prof. Masi for three more weeks; then all students will attend the last three weeks of classes with Prof. Regnoli.
The lettorato classes will take place in both semesters. All students will have to sit a Placement Test (28th September and 3rd October - written parts; 29th September and 5th and 6th October - oral parts) to identify the lettorato group they belong to.
