Lo studente potrà acquisire conoscenze relative ad un’opera fondamentale dell’ultima fase della produzione platonica, in cui si intrecciano temi politici, cosmologici, metafisici, epistemologici.
Students will be able to acquire knowledge concerning a fundamental work of Plato’s late philosophy, a dialogue in which political, cosmological, metaphysical and epistemological topics intertwine.
La verifica avrà luogo mediante un esame orale alla fine del corso.
The evaluation will take place through an oral exam at the end of the course.
Lo studente dovrà acquisire la capacità di esaminare con intelligenza critica i testi e i temi trattati nel corso, inquadrandoli correttamente nel loro contesto storico-filosofico.
Students are expected to acquire the skill to critically examine the texts and topics explored during the course, and to correctly frame them within their historical-philosophical context.
La verifica delle capacità avrà luogo mediante le modalità impiegate per accertare l’acquisizione delle conoscenze.
The evaluation of skills will be based on the same method used to assess learning.
Lo studente potrà acquisire e sviluppare non solo accuratezza e precisione nella lettura e valutazione delle posizioni sostenute nei testi che verranno letti e commentati in classe, ma anche attitudine all’uso critico di testi classici nel dibattito su problematiche contemporanee.
Students will be able to acquire and develop not just accuracy in the interpretation and assessment of the views presented in the texts read and discussed in class, but also a critical approach to the use of Classical texts in the debate on contemporary issues.

È presupposta una conoscenza generale della storia della filosofia antica, con particolare riferimento alla filosofia di Platone. In proposito, per ampliare le conoscenze di base, si consigliano: F. Ferrari, Introduzione a Platone, Bologna, Il Mulino 2018; M. Erler, Platone. Un’introduzione, Torino, Einaudi 2008; F. Trabattoni, “Platone”, in F. Trabattoni (a cura di), Storia della filosofia antica, II. Platone e Aristotele, Roma, Carocci, 2016, 27-124. Non è richiesta la conoscenza del greco antico.
General knowledge of ancient philosophy is expected and in particular of Plato’s philosophy. For an overview, the following texts are recommended: F. Ferrari, Introduzione a Platone, Bologna, Il Mulino 2018; M. Erler, Platone. Un’introduzione, Torino, Einaudi 2008; F. Trabattoni, “Platone”, in F. Trabattoni (ed), Storia della filosofia antica, II. Platone e Aristotele, Roma, Carocci, 2016, 27-124. Knowledge of ancient Greek is not required.
Ulteriore materiale didattico potrà essere fornito durante le lezioni. Riferimenti ai testi originali saranno resi comprensibili anche a chi non abbia conoscenza del greco antico.
Further teaching material may be provided during the lectures. References to the original texts will be made understandable even to students who do not know ancient Greek.
Il Politico di Platone
Il corso consisterà nella lettura e nell’analisi del Politico di Platone. Benché formalmente dedicato a un solo tema – la definizione della figura del politikos, cioè dell’esperto nell’arte di governare una comunità politica – il dialogo esplora diversi aspetti centrali della filosofia platonica, come il metodo dialettico, l’uso filosofico del mito, la teoria delle forme costituzionali, il rapporto tra potere politico e conoscenza, e il ruolo delle leggi. Il corso propone una dettagliata analisi delle principali questioni discusse nel Politico, ponendo particolare attenzione da una parte al rapporto di questo dialogo con le due principali opere politiche di Platone – la Repubblica e le Leggi – dall’altro al rapporto con il Sofista e il Teeteto, con i quali il Politico ha uno stretto legame sia in relazione alla struttura drammatica, sia in relazione ai contenuti.
Plato’s Statesman
The course is devoted to the reading and analysis of Plato’s Statesman. Although the dialogue is formally dedicated to a specific topic – the definition of the politikos, i.e. the expert in statesmanship, the Statesman investigates many crucial themes of Plato’s philosophy, such as the dialectical method, the philosophical use of the myth, the theory of the forms of government, the relationship between political power and knowledge, and the role of the laws. The course offers an in-depth analysis of the main issues discussed in the dialogue, with special attention to the relationship between the Statesman and Plato’s two main political works – the Republic and the Laws – and the Statesman’s proximity to the Sophist and the Theaetetus, with which this dialogue has remarkable connections, regarding both the dramatic structure and the content.
